the only difference is, with FOSS when you find a bug you fix it. With Microsoft you get a cookie cutter e-mail or if you're lucky some dialog with someone in India. Which btw brings up an interesting point. If they were to adopt this supposedly "horribly insecure" FOSS, they could just fix whatever they deem insecure and stop bitching. It's not like there's some other option. Oh wait...punchcards! hehehe.
you're posting at a 0 too so why would I take advice from you? I've gotten first posts marked as Redundant twice. I've gotten 100% on topic posts rated off topic. I've gotten unrated posts modded "overrated". And if I say anything good about Microsoft I get modded a troll. The whole system is a joke.
the slashdot discussion system is such a load of bullshit, I don't really care what people think. I've been up and down between -1 and +2 about 3 times now. Maybe I don't get how this works but I like to actually post what I think about the story instead of some fluffy, karma magnet bullshit. If some Linux assholes wanna mod me down cuz I merely said I don't use Linux then they should be banned as far as I'm concerned. But I did change my sig for you. That's how it is and you know it cuz I keep it real
They can fix the hell out of it and it would still be vulnerable. What if someone wrote a super small bootable virus, then the virus' initial form used Partition Magic-like functionality to write its own partition and stick the virus on it then tell the computer before restarting to boot from that one. Then the virus can do whatever it wants to the MBR or basically anything else on the drive cuz no files or anything would be open. I'm pretty sure Windows can't protect the MBR if it isn't running.
Isn't the sun an awfully big flashlight that's already shining on it? I mean if it's closer to Earth it must be pretty damn bright there. Why not just wait until what you wanna look like is facing the sun...then look at it lol. A giant space flashlight seems like a waste of much needed power on a spacecraft when you've got the sun right there.
I'm thinking you use the wiimote to like flip pans and take stuff off the stove with a spatula and if you leave it on too long your food burns and you get a worse rating at the end.
btw I LOVE ALTON BROWN! He's the only reason to watch the food network!
I remember way back in high school (okay 4 years ago) and in some college classes the teachers were always talking about how the US power grid was a joke even compared to some 3rd world countries. And now with the whole terrorism thing, it's even worse to have a crappy power grid. I read a thing about how other countries have way better and more adaptive and efficient and safe power grids like Japan and stuff. We needed to replace it like decades ago but nobody ever wants to pay for it. So I figure if we need to gut 90% of the system anyway, why not do it when we really ought to switch to solar at the same time too. That's gotta save money doing them both at once.
Don't you mean like 20 HD movies? And plus, since when has Apple ever made a decision that would benefit the customer. Their servers can't handle downloading HD movies so they say screw it. Plus who would watch it on a tiny screen? It's HD! I don't think the screen can even display 1280 pixels across (which I think is 720p). The one and only reason I'd buy that drive is to speed up my boot time cuz it's been slow forever and it's all hard drive IO that takes it forever. The processor doesn't even max and I've got 2GB of fast ram. Other than that, maybe web servers could use this to really quickly serve up tons of tiny files. That actually would be a pretty significant upgrade to web servers.
Your only chance of beating me and like 95% of other online players is using a mouse and even then you damn well better be fast with it! I even have lost games because of using a ball mouse. You gotta play so fast, it just wouldn't work on the PSP. Even the offline stuff is kinda difficult to do if you're not able to move troops quickly.
Well, aren't we just mister know it all? Tell me which is more efficient: Using energy to take chemicals and arranging them so that photosynthesis can happen and using energy to transport and pump CO2 into the area then using energy to seperate out the complex mollecules made then using energy to transport it then burning it with like 30% efficiency to turn a turbine to make power
OR
sticking a solar cell out in the sun and getting electricity from it
yeeeeah it's such a great, efficient idea! Well gee let's even say that it makes more energy than you put in cuz the trucks used to transport the finished fuel put out more CO2 than it took to make the fuel! It's like magic!
yeah, especially when they figure out that it always takes more energy to build a complex mollecule than to burn it. Seriously, some scientists are just dumb. Plants use nutrients to build complex mollecules from CO2. So that means they'd be putting in more joules worth of "nutrients" (if you measured their potential chemical energy) in than we're getting out in fuel.
funny you should mention this. I saw something on the history channel about Wonder Woman and way back in the day when it first came out, even the author admits it was practically kinky porn with clothes on. It was like some pervy bondage comic. They showed shots of some pages and I was like WHOA seriously wtf.
naw, I just check it all day hehehe. No seriously, on the 150 fresh imaged laptops this was my go to site for a login that would let me disable the "want IE to remember password" dialog so I was here A LOT.
btw I feel obligated to point out what the moronic author left out. If it's on the internet, people anywhere in the world can see it which means lunch is at a very different time in every time zone. So no, you can't really sell premium lunchtime advertising. There's what like 4 different noon to 1 times in the US alone. I suppose you could IP match it to a location but who does that?
I heard one of the people that did well in a competion just like this used a super old program/game called AI Bug to very quickly test out movement logic and search pattern and reactions and stuff. It kinda has its own programming language that's like pseudocode with GOTO line # commands. I've used it before myself and my bug was unbeatable in combat hehehe. But yeah they got it to be really, really intelligent cuz they could just change some code and hit go and let the little bug on the screen act out the code quickly instead of actually waiting for your robot to do it in real life. Also you can build a replica of the arena virtually so you don't have to do it physically.
If anyone's entering, see if you can find that program or one like it cuz it makes things WAY easier
yeah seriously why the hell would you put Windows on a voting machine?!?! What a bunch of morons. The simpler the better. All it has to do is record a goddam vote and print something. You don't need internet protocols and windows update and Free Cell on it.
I'm hoping all the data about Area 51 getting stolen shows up on the 08 list! It's not my resolution to get it done but I bet it's some hackers':-D I mean come on, every geek wants to know. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet
So they're making a community interaction site to get people's ideas and suggestions and opinions on their company and the environment. Hmm, well I'm not psychic but I bet they're going to say they want more fuel efficient vehicles or ones that don't run on gasoline and to stop with the pension sinkhole problem.
If I'm reading, I don't care where I am and I'm probably not going anywhere so location sensing seems like a pretty useless feature to add in since it would drive the cost up for no reason. Unless of course they wanna spy on their customers
Wasn't this a twilight zone episode? I liked that one. Anyway, how the hell can they speculate on what would happen if everything was a simulation if they have no idea what kind of system is running it. If some intelligent beings somewhere made a simulation that was the entire solar system at the very least, they'd probably make it good enough to make NOTHING happen when quantum events happen. Instead of photons traveling backwards at faster than the speed of light like a funhouse mirror (as seen on Slashdot!) they'd just have nothing happen. Seems a heck of a lot simpler to me. The whole measuring an event causes it to happen thing sounds like a good way to save on CPU resources in the VR computer though lol.
also I'm sure this can't be too great for the Chinese company. I'm no economist but it seems like something you wouldn't want happening. Don't they like get the invested money from the stock and like do something with it like spend it. But then if the stock gets dumped they gotta pay back the stockholders the raised share value. Sounds like an instant bankrupt. Well if so, that's also good because the more damage we can do to any Chinese company, the better. They're oppressive, arrogant, censor nazis who don't hesitate to pollute the Earth and ruin actually good businesses by selling toxic and incredibly low quality or illegal goods to the rest of the world.
if they ever want to improve their crappy economy, they should all just learn english. In case you haven't noticed, every country that does international business has like 50% of the people know fluent english. Plus who the heck else in the world uses cyrillic?
Hey I've got an idea. Why don't they build it with solar panels that convert solar energy to elctricty so they don't have to pump any salt. Seriously, ones that run on just heat are such a bad, inefficient idea. Solar cells and panels are becoming more and more efficient and just plain heat ones will never catch up in the near future. I mean come on, the hot material in a heat only one loses heat just existing. And it loses more heat being pumped through pipes. The larger the plant gets, the more inefficient it gets.
btw for that reason and as mentioned in that other guy's reply, this entire idea is idiotic compared to that other power station where the mirrors move and focus the light on one tower to heat oil there so there's minimal pumping required.

yeah actually I was planning on basing my vote on whether or not this next square is a bomb...

But Redhat is free and has basically no restrictions on anything and isn't some greed centered craphole OS. Ooooh burn, what are they gonna do now?
