  1. Powershell on Novell Assents To "Windows Is Cheaper Than Linux" · · Score: 0

I've spent some time playing with powershell, it is an attempt to integrate a *nix shell into their server/development environment. I guess so $USE and M$ can play nicely. Not quite as powerful as is suggested. It came out around the same time as Novell/M$ licensing thing came up. They know serious admins don't want paper-clips and wizards and need some sturdy shell to issue edicts and commands.

"Our decision to simplify our mixed-source environment with Microsoft and Novell will allow us to reduce the cost and complexity"

I really haven't seen enough outcry against Novell in the Linux community, nothing good can come from this partnership.

  8. Amazing Findings!! on Study Says 2 In 5 Bosses Lie · · Score: 1

I am surprised that a study like this is being conducted in graduate studies. It is nothing more than educational incontinence. The students should have smacked their prof in the head for suggesting that it would be worthy of their time to ask employees whether or not they like their bosses. Maybe bosses are too busy to chat with all of their employees everyday ("silent treatment"). Maybe employees value their own opinions a little too much and are upset that bosses are not running up to their desks asking their opinion about everything. 2 in 5 bosses lie!! 1 in 1 human beings lie!! I'd like to see some graduate studies and statistics arguing against that statement. How about this observation, "No abuse should be taken lightly, especially in situations where it becomes a criminal act." Is this guy Prof. Emeritus or something? Such wisdom and insight, this study will revolutionize the way we work in America! Can you imagine being credited with working on such a project and earning a graduate degree(probably PhD)?

I remember I was not so keen to rush out and buy the 20-30 floppies it took to install windows 95. It did come on the next computer I upgraded to though. (With a CD!)

  13. Microsoft would hurt itself by doing so. on So What If Linux Infringes On Microsoft IP? · · Score: 1

If Microsoft attacked Linux, it would do major damage to companies that use Linux servers. It would be impossible for every Linux server to be migrated under an "or else condition." It would do damage to businesses that rely on both MS and Linux. There are so many reasons why it is really too late for them to effectively take over the code and grab Linux companies by the balls. They are probably waiting to see what Google's stake will be in the OS market before they even attempt to press the buttons. I don't see the big bully beating up Linux for lunch money, it would be horrible PR and would cause major damage to technology markets and tech development. They may have some legal ground but it would really seem silly for them to do anything.

  14. Re:Incompetence on Birmingham Drops Open Source Initiative · · Score: 1

Deployment is a complicated issue. The city likely does not have the workforce to maintain the systems. The quote about 200 systems for 1/2 mill pounds is idiotic. One would logically assume the money would be diverted into other systems and channels. As a Linux user, I understand that many of you are upset by this. But unless you live in Birmingham and use the library, how does this affect you. They did get linux desktops alongside the new Windows systems. So, it is a win for Linux and a chance for people to experience it for the first time. My library still runs windows 2000.
