  1. Try Flemming on Scientists Hope To Settle "Hobbit" Debate · · Score: 1

Dawkins? Since when did perpetual whining make one a biologist? Try someone who's actually made a real scientific contribution, like Alexander Flemming/Louis Pasteur/any real scientist. When was the last time Dawkins did anything besides try to extend the right to vote to (Insert Bush joke here) chimpanzees?

  3. Time vs. $$$ on eBay Delisting All Auctions for Virtual Property · · Score: 1

Simple. You could spend x amount of time for whatever, or you could pay y dollars for it. Depends on if you place more value on your time or your money (although some would argue time=money). You're likely paying a subscription fee that could very well hit $100/year anyway, so what's another $15 to save yourself 40+ hours of grinding for the whatever? If you've got the money, you might want to save some time and just skip the the higher levels of the game. If you've got too much time on your hands,or don't want to pay extra money for something intangeable, start a character/quest from scratch, and if you think your real life health may be lower than you're in game health, then smash your computer and get some serious phychological help asap, or at least go outside and plant a tree or something.

  5. We're gonna need a bigger magnet on Underground Water on Mars? · · Score: 1

Yep, the obvious makes Mars pretty unfriendly, but I think the biggest problem mankind would face would be the radiation. Good ol' Earth here is set up with a convient magnetic field that keeps the solar radiation out. Mars doesn't have one of these. Even if you can, say, terriform Mars to have a breathable atmosphere, get a greenhouse effect going to make it warm, ect., the lack of protection from the solar radiation would strip it all away in time, and boil all the water to vapor, which would also be stripped away. Sounds fun, altough if you have the ability to terriform a whole planet, I suppose a planet wide magnetic field wouldn't be that much harder to pull off. The other option you'd havewould be to live in a bubble with a self-contained environment and radiation protection, and we all know how good humans are at living in peace with limited resources. Rather than eyeballing Mars, its probably a better idea to hold off a century or two to ensure Earth continued habability.

  6. Who cares if they're right? on Expert Wants to Decertify Global Warming Skeptics · · Score: 1

So what if creationists are right? No one will care. Someone could produce solid irrefutable proof that life was created and very few scientists would even look at the data. The truth very rarely matters as much as what can be labeled 'scientific,' some exceptions being gravity and inertia, both quite unscientific truths. Yet, go to any quack who thinks that just because his ideas have the word quantum in front of them and LOOK OUT! Its gotta be true because it looks scientific. That's how we end up with a butt load of alternate dimensions and 'I'm not really here right now' crap that's about as directly provable as creationism, yet is still viewed as real science.
On a side note, say a creationist finds a flaw in evolution (Dawkin's Holy Order of Let's Turn Atheism Into A Religion faithful out there, chill). Maybe this flaw is shot down after some research. Maybe evolution can't explain it. Either way, doesn't this dissenting voice better science? And yes, I realize it works both ways. The point is, a single group's view real science does not make.

The funniest thing about /. is watching how fast the trail derails. Does anyone else notice the lack of discussion on the topic of censorship? Regardless or your religious views, this is about censorship. That being said, if this game is banned, they might as well quit selling the Holy Bible, The God Delusion, and everything in between. Because, you know, we can't think for ourselves.

  11. Try torn between the gullible and the gullible on U.S. Classrooms Torn Between Science and Religion · · Score: 1

First, that 'teacher' should get the boot. If he wants to educate his students, he could kill two birds with one stone by giving them a little 'Thou shalt not lie' sermon. He'd teach them morals and irony. Second, has it ever crossed anyone's mind that just because this guy is a nut job zealot doesn't merit bashing religion in general? Yeah, this he's a jerk, but I could list off a atheists who have done much worse (no offense meant to atheists, much offense meant to the all those who subscribe to the Dawkins worshiping, Jack Thompso-esque 'New Atheist' religion). Oh, and for those of you who can't figure it out by yourself, there is a difference between atheists who do not believe in any gods, and Dawkins followers who believe so strongly that there is no such thing that they would lead a crusade on religion. Kudos to Dawkins, by the way. He took what the Catholic Church has been doing for years, that being play on human's need to worship something by bastardizing Christianity (atheism in Dawkins case) for a profit, only he did it with science instead of God.
