One thing that was good about slashdot back in the day was that you could be certain that no "outside forces" were going to affect what stories were posted. Here it seems as tho someone upstairs didn't like this story--considered it Too Hot to be on the front page of slashdot.
This doesn't look good. I, of course, give Rob and Crew the benefit of the doubt, that maybe it is a bug of some sort, and the story will be reposted/linked a little later.
If it isn't, I will have to rethink why I read slashdot. I don't want "Filtered news for nerds, stuff that isn't Too Hot".
I guess we will have to wait and see.

"All the other kings said it was daft to build a castle in the swap, but I built it all the same. Just to show 'em." (Sorry, I had to)
This contest may seem bad at first, but how is it any different than working for a software company? They only pay you so much per year but stand to make a great deal of money off of the software they sell. I think this contest is a great idea on Loki's part.
And I imagine that most of the people who enter are going to do so, at least in part, to make the game better through their efforts.

Anyone have linkage to materials on shortwave for beginners? This article made me rather interested. Not just in the numberstations, but some of the links had recordings from other cool things. I might just have to build me a little radio, if I knew how.

Okay, this is a question I've been meaning to ask for a while. I'm quite unhappy with my 4meg Mach64 agp card. I'm tired of being stuck at 1024x768.
What would you recommend as a good 2d graphics card under Linux with Xfree? I'm not too terribly interested in 3d support, but it would be okay. A little while back I helped a guy install rh6.0 on a box that had a Diamond Viper 550, I couldn't get the 3d stuff to work (q2 or q3), but the 2d was sweet, and I figure 3d will get worked out in the next few months.

When you secure a new user's box, most of the time they don't pay attention. And, in their defense, the things that fly by them are totaly over their heads anyway.
I started kind of like you, except I had been using unix (slowaris:) for about a year (on one of the school's systems). When I first installed Linux, I knew nothing about how to secure a box, but at least I was comfortable using it.
Fortunatly, I was able to learn, over time, how to secure a box without being trashed by kiddies in the process. Heh. Now I'm the guy in the dorm that people get install's from. A few of them actually learn, but most of them never quite get it. Oh well, at least I try.:)

Anyone wanna run over a list of countries with better privacy/crypto laws? I've heard Netherlands mentioned on this thread already... We'll just have a Slashdot vote on the best country, and we can just pack up and leave for the number-one voted. (The real life/. affect on some country's immigration services would be pretty funny.)
It's getting to the point where I don't want to be stuck in America when I am 30. *sigh*
Seems like the GameBoy has remain (for the most part) unchanged for years--it's about time they upgraded that dinky thing.
Don't get me wrong, I loved my GameBoy--years ago. But it seems out of date these days. I'm glad to see Nintendo hasn't given up on portable's. I thought the GameBoy was already in the grave.:)
The difference is that Java was the effort of one company: Sun. It only takes one Sun exec to bring the whole project to failure.
Linux, on the other hand, is the effort of many many programmers all over the world, all with different wants and needs. Nobody can really kill Linux. Even if Linus were to be hit by a bus (pray it never happens), Linux would continue.
I'm not sure about all this talk of world domination anyway. Even if we don't take over the world, it isn't the end of the world. I use Linux because it works. Taking over the world is all nice and all, but if we fail, we at least still have a decent OS made better by the attempt.
The new devel Afterstep (the 1.7.x series) has Gnome support.
Disclaimer: I don't use Gnome so I can not attest to how well it works. Also, since I have been without net access at home (only at work under NT) I haven't been able to keep up with the newest devel snapshots.:(
The fact that some American agency can spy on supposedly "secure" systems in other contries may make their admins think twice about using Windows (or any other closed OS). This is something even the PHB's can't ignore.
I know if I owned a company, I sure wouldn't want NSA taking my company data to help out some American company. Yeah, sure, they are not supposed to, but what is to stop them.
So admins in countries other than US: start looking at open *nix systems. You can actually have some security with *BSD and Linux.
(Heh. Just like America seems to be the last country still holding off on the metric system, it will be the last country still using Windows.)
While I agree with some of the things you said, I don't agree with your conclusion.
That attitude is the "I run Linux because it is anything but Micro$loth" attitude. Choose your candidate becase he/she matches your beliefs, not becase of their party. Otherwise you will be sorry with what you end up with down the line.

Overall, tho, I think it is better to jump the gun a little in defending free speech than to turn a blind eye to everything.

The latter is a much underated O'Reilly book, that despite concentrating on one flavor of Unix is very useful for the Linux programmers out there."
