  1. This just in... on Network Solutions to Sell WHOIS Ads · · Score: 1

In an effort to make a profit, god has decided to advertise on all newborn human beings. The ads will start appearing on children as soon as next month. More details later. Heh.

Anyway, this doesn't sound like such a bad thing. It is only on their webpage, which I can't say I've ever used anyway. Just don't visit. Or if you must, use junkbuster.

  5. Scoop from someone who has worked on this stuff... on Some Nuke Plants Still Have Y2K Bugs · · Score: 1

Last semester I co-oped with a power company (who will remain nameless) working on y2k testing for the software used in the nuclear power plants. The company owns 5 nuc. plants and is working on buying more.

Nobody in the y2k testing teem ever encountered a significant problem with the software. We ran many tests--rolling over the machines to 2000, upgrade of all database and database components, and extensive testing of homebrew software. None of the core systems will even be affected. The only potential problem is with these external systems.

The thing to remember (at least for our nuc. plants) is that we have many failsafe plans. The plants are so government regulated you have to fill out paperwork to sneeze, and you can only do so in approved areas. If something goes wrong, the plant goes into a safe mode.

Don't be disapponted when nothing happens (at least in the nuc. plants) because of y2k.

  6. It is happening... on FBI Stops Satellite Phones · · Score: 1

Doesn't take much editing to produce:

The FBI and other U.S. law enforcement agencies are worried that new space-based telephone systems, which theoretically allow a citizen to use a wireless phone from virtually anywhere on earth, will undermine their ability to control people and trace thought criminals through cellphones.

Some may argue I am just paranoid. But I offer this: being paranoid is the way we protect our rights. The problem these days is we have been tricked into no longer caring. We are so wrapped up in petty material addictions, we can't even focus on the real issues. And when no one cares anymore, we will lose all of our rights.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Cancer has taken many in my family, so I do know first hand the effects it has. But in most cases where cancer killed someone in my family, it might have been preventable.

I just wonder if some the risks we take to fight cancer are realy worth it. We're talking about a potential silent, airborn, invisible killer. If I had to choose between dying of cancer within a year and potentially being exposed to an enhanced ebola, I would probably choose cancer.

    But that is just me.

  8. Scientists create Ebola++ on Scientists create flu virus entirely from genes · · Score: 1

Great. Now we can create a supervirus and sell it to the highest bidder.

I am not sure if curing cancer is worth the destruction of using this technology for the wrong reasons. That is a hard call.

Seems like we should be trying to eliminate cancer by changing what we put into our bodies and what we expose ourselves to, (Smoking, too much sun, overly processed food, etc), then start worrying about the other ways to fight it.

  9. HOWTO: Changing length bonus on Super Quick Quickies · · Score: 2

Go to your preferences page and down near the bottom there is:

Long Comment Bonus (Assign +1 to lengthy comments):
[A text box with a number in it]

There is no explanation of the number, but I think (after playing with it for a bit) it is the length in chars a comment must be before it gets the +1. Jack it up to a really high number and noone seems to get the length bonus.

This leads me to believe that the boost in score is not 'real'. It just is a filter that is applied every time you view a page of comments.

  14. Didn't have internet access when I was in HS. on Passing Porn, Banning the Bible · · Score: 1

My highschool didn't have internet access when I was there, so I guess I can't fully appreciate the problem, but...

One thing that seems obvious (at least, from talking to a few still in highscool [different school, btw]) is that the librarians that have to deal with this software hate it just as much as the students do. I guess it is one of those mandates from the "heavens"--you know, those totaly detached school administrators who believe they know what is best for the children. Most of them have either never taught in highschool or haven't taught in quite a while.

Now, I don't have kids atm, but I know I wouldn't want these people making moral judgements for my children. I remember in my highschool, we were not allowed to read certain books in English class. That really pissed me off. But if you complain, you are marked as a trouble maker. That only leaves pulling your children out of that school, and many people don't have that option.

I guess the solution is to start working for change at the state government level, and try to get some of these silly regulations changed.

    Just my cents x2.
