Everything about the console is designed to welcome casual gamers, from that unfortunate name to the remote-shaped controller (aka the Wii Remote) that translates movement into in-game action.

The Wii Remote? Whatever happened to Wiimote? And didn't everyone get over the "unfortunate name" months ago? Between these examples and the references to playing Duck Hunt and arcades in Times Square, it seems to me that Sofge is acting like a crochety old man with no desire to keep an open mind. He even throws in Halo to make it seem like hes "down" with the new kids. Don't get me wrong, I grew up in the Duck Hunt era (I was depressed when it was coming to virtual console because 15 years later I still can't shoot that damn laughing dog). I remember paying 3 quarters to play Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Sofke, despite living through the same era, kept a tone made it seem like unless the Wii danced the polka and then cooked him a steak dinner, it sucked. The entire article might as well say:

"In my day, we only had 1 button and a joystick, and we liked it! And we had to hike to video game store 5 miles in the snow! Uphill both ways!"

  11. Can Microsoft handle it? on Vista's EULA Product Activation Worries · · Score: 2, Insightful
No doubt there's going to be thousands of consumers with legitimate beef for having their licensed Vista terminated by some hiccup in MS's license system. Its only a matter of time, so what happens then? Is Microsoft equipped to be judge, jury and .EXEcutioner for a large part of its user base or will they simply give up the daunting task of sorting legitimate claims from false claims? Will they care enough to deal with legitimate claims or pull the old "New Standard" line out of their bag and claim that they are foolproof and that every claim is false?

It seems to me Microsoft wants a constant surveillance license check to happen and they took steps to make it happen without considering that the average user is not going to want to deal with these complications and will likely stay with XP or switch to MacOS or an easy Linux install like Ubuntu. Of course, MS will probably respond by end-of-lifeing XP, but will that give them the desired result or alienate more users?

You'd think a multi-billion dollar company would have enough to fund a "common sense" committee somewhere.

people are forgetting that they are not always the target market for computers

Until this was posted, I couldn't figure out the "why" to this problem. The "why" is indeed, pre-built home systems.

Think about your average Joe that doesn't know a USB from USPS. He's not going to concern himself with more statistics than he has to when it comes to buying a computer. If he can get his CPU and his graphics rolled into one component at a lower cost than having them separate, he will without a thought. It doesn't even come down to ease of repair since most average users will have someone else repairing their system. It will simply come down to cost.

I've had the same home built box for 4 years, I just upgrade as needed (and sometimes as wanted). Average pre-built buyer doesn't care for upgrading. As soon as it breaks: fix it. If it costs too much to fix it: replace it. The word "upgrade" isn't in an average computer purchaser's vocabulary. If the Fusion can last even a year and a half on average, that would be adequate given that most pre-built buyers are conditioned to buy a new box every 2 years give or take. For average computer buyers, it will work as long as AMD can keep the cost down. I will agree however, its definitely not practical for those of us who buy new video cards almost as often as we buy milk.

Now, Nintendo is tapping into the mainstream while the other big two are forcing their standards on gamers. It cost Nintendo when they absolutely had to have their own unique media, now it appears Sony and MS will repeat the mistakes of the past.

How cost-effective is public school? How many of those kids are going to really make any money for the state or country? Wouldn't we be better served to send all of our children to private schools with smaller classes and overall better education? Yet we still pay taxes into public schooling for those that can't afford or choose against private school. Adding a state tax for municipal WiFi networks isn't so far fetched when you compare it to public school. You may choose to send your kid to a private school with a better education and thus, better return on your investment. Compare private schooling to home WiFi, better return on investment since you gain the advantage of setting your personal preferences. Just as there are people who won't use municipal Wi-Fi, there are people who don't send their kids to public school and those people still pay taxes for public education.

It was such a great game and would have passed right under my radar if I hadn't been told about. I wonder how many games have passed under the collective radar like that over the last couple decades?
