I don't know how good the analogy is but this news immediately reminded me of Hank Rearden, the character in Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" and his alloy for building railroads.
Some friends and I were talking about a different kind of search engine. One that can be given an image or sound clip as input and which searches the web for similar matches. So, for example if you give it a photo of a person, it gets you all photos in which that person appears. Similarly for a sound clip. I think this would be an interesting AI project.
