  1. Re:stopped using it? on Why Microsoft Killed the Windows Start Button · · Score: 4, Insightful

There's a difference between knowing how to use it and not wanting to use it.

My coworkers generally don't like to use computers as it is, they only use it because their job requires it. Most just learn just enough to get the job done and don't care to put in effort to learn any more.

  2. Re:stopped using it? on Why Microsoft Killed the Windows Start Button · · Score: 5, Interesting

    Absolutely correct.

I support 120+ users. One thing I've noticed during our Windows 7 migration is that our staff do not use the start menu at all. The server places shortcuts for six or seven common use tools on users' desktops, and are shown how to pin apps to the taskbar.

The result I've noticed is that users have pinned office and internet apps used frequently to the taskbar, and use the icons on the desktop like they always have. I'd say about 5 users have seen the usefulness of the search feature on the Start menu. The other 115 don't use it.

The only time I've seen staff use the Start button here is to log off when they're done with the machine. If there was a button on the taskbar to do that, they'd never use the Start menu at all!

Also, make sure that you find a backup solution that does actually back up the entire VM and all its related config files! This was you just restore the entire virtual machine and power it back up and you should be good.

If you only have the one server, you can't do in-house redundancy on multiple machines, but you could possibly hook up an external hard drive and use that for backups. Just make sure you have copies off-site! There are companies that can store tapes or drives for you on a weekly basis if you don't want to do it yourself. Not sure about the cost on that though.

As with any backup/disaster recovery scenario, make sure you test it! Nothing like restoring an VM and finding out it doesn't work! There are some solutions on the market that allow you to sandbox your backed up virtual machines and power them up under a virtual network separate from your main one to ensure they work!

In my case, the BIOS did intervene - it spun up the fans to full speed. However, the system hardlocked. Hardlocked as in holding the power button down wouldn't do anything. The only way to power it off was to unplug & yank the battery. And yes, the laptop was really toasty. I wonder how much I shortened the life of it...

I suspect that the existing install wasn't reading the temperature properly and so it was reporting it incorrectly. As I said, after installing the newest (at that time) lm_sensors from the repository, the problem went completely away.

  11. Re:Unit cannot be resold as received? on NewEgg: Installing Linux Breaks Laptop · · Score: 5, Informative

Yes, some drivers can cause issues. My laptop came with Vista, which I despise, and so I installed linux on it. Everything mostly worked properly with the exception of the hard-wired lan port and the occasional hang. During my own troubleshooting, I discovered one problem would happen in both OSs and one would not. It turns out a linux driver was causing issues with the temperature probe or something similar and was overheating. So I can understand why manufacturers void the warranty when software can cause the machine to overheat and do nasty things. The LAN port was actually defective. I fixed the temperature issue by getting a bleeding edge copy of lm_sensors.

In my case, I tarballed my linux install to an external HDD and restored an image I took before I installed linux and sent it back for servicing (which was repaired and sent back to me.)

In the article it says the BIOS tests confirmed an error. Who knows if it was a rogue driver that caused it?
