    1) We all deal with that in one form or another.

    and 2) I don't see that the right to rebuttal was taken away, not even on the kid's own web site. Plus the council and school can actually issue press releases and have people take notice.

    This was someone ruling over their petty school fiefdom, and that, unfortunately, isn't limited to the UK or the US.

    You're assuming rationality and the small business owner knows what a certificate is. Even $20 can seem like a bad expense when it seems they are spending it for hot air. Try explaining certs to someone with no concept of any of that sometime.

    Actually, I've heard plenty of bad word-of-mouth reviews from regular users on Windows phone too, the most prevalent complaint being that it is slow.

    This is called false duality, false dichotomy, or false choice, and it's the fallacy that RULES our political landscape right now. It was also McCarthy's favorite fantasy.

    If you dig into tax abatements and laws in certain states it turns out the state tax rate for a lot of companies receiving abatements and incentives are actually negative. Some states give out tax refunds in certain situations no matter whether the tax was paid or not.

    the corporate tax rate trolling in media is one of the most misleading arguments ever.

    The tax rate for huge number (including some of the biggest) corporations in the US right now is already 0%. The bigger you are more likely you can employ 1x10^56 lawyers to get you out of each and every obligation.

    Again, it's ass backwards... but that is what it is like right now because our government is controlled.

    I really appreciate your comment, but I cringe at the "maximize shareholder value" meme.

    The top 1% of the country owns WAY more than 50% of the stocks. The biggest shareholders are the CEO/executive class themselves. When you say "maximize shareholder value" it implies that they are doing it for "everyone" (or the 401k, normal investor, index fund investor) and I think the it's misleading. At the end of the day they are doing it for themselves and its just another selfish motive.

    We also treat the "shareholder value" meme as if it was handed down by Moses on stone tablets, too. It's a legal construct and is based on legal precedence. If we actually had the political will we could add requirements to corporate charters that gave them more responsibility. At one point in the past (pre railroad barons) they were actually there!

    which gets you back to discussion on the broken patent system. Another reason why we say it is broken is because it artificially inflates market prices and prevents the decimation of technology that was previously only available to the richest few.
