Being how the internet has embedded itself as a critical infrastructure for our personal lives and our economy. It is important that ISP are properly regulated so they realize the importance they carry. Imagine a Power Utility cutting power or browning out a Solar Cell manufacture, or a community who is against how they generate power. That is why Utilities have a lot of regulation. Because they are vital to the community, and we can't allow such companies to just do anything they want like other businesses, because a few people can make a wide ranging bad decision hurting the community, without any recourse from that community.
The same issue is with ISP. We can not treat them like a Utility company if in most areas we can choose from dozen of ISP's Where competition will keep them honest. Much like back in the 1990's with dial up internet. Sure you had big names such as AOL and MSN. But even in rural areas we had BBS's becoming dial up ISP's, all with their own features and pricing. My first ISP (Called Cow Land BBS) you would pay $20 by calling a 1-900 number and I got something like 20 hours of usage, that would last me 3 or 4 months (14.4k modem) and 200k would be considered a big file. 2Meg downloads for a game like Doom was considered a big investment. But we had options back then today I have one good option and 2 other poor ones. Cable Modem (Spectrum) and Cell (ATT and Verizon) the Cell service with these two carriers actually reach my house, but they come and go, and they are way too expensive for home use. So if Spectrum decides to block a site or make it unable I am powerless to do much about it. Because ISP are not treated like a utility.
The biggest issues that the GOP had with Net Neutrality is it goes against their idea of having government control over business. However we are starting to see what I expected to see. 1 simple to follow rule being overturned being replaced with many complicated rules.
Let’s put it in a different way. An alert system to alert us about a missing adult who is trained in self defense and in normal strong physical condition.
Chances are this guy who may seem to be in distress is just out having a beer or getting into their own trouble then actually being kidnap.
The problem is there isn’t any white box phones. Like the white box PC where there are a bunch of standardized components that we can put together. To make our own custom phones. If we had this, I expect we would have a couple Linux ports and a Net BSD port by now. Heck Microsoft may get back in the mobile market again. However at the moment the build tolerance of these phones are very difficult for the small business or the individual to make and sell a practical phone that they can say is theirs.
Like all other makers, When Apple releases a product, and especially when it is rushed there are problems. Software problems are the easiest and cheapest to fix, so I expect Apple trying to rush out their new hardware before Christmas, they had slacked on the software testing. While iOS 11 and OS X has it bugs, there hasn't been any Something Gates about it current line of hardware, the iPhone 8 and X have been touted for its build quality (compared to the Google Pixel which had some cheap parts on it). Its Face ID on the X seems to work better then most people expected. In terms of hardware the really hit it off and got a release before Christmas. The software on the other hand seems like it was rushed. With little time testing on the new hardware. Especially the X which Apple wanted to keep secrete so it was really limited to Apple Employees, for real world testing. But software being software it is just a wireless push away from being fixed. Vs a Screen Gate, or a Antenna Gate, or a Bend Gate which is hard for Apple to fix because they had already sold the hardware.
That is a bit too late.... Oh wait I got it... Ha Ha... Facebook has been using face recognition for a while now. Hopefully this way I will be able to block my friends from seeing posts that different friends posted about me.
Hey look it is me playing Miniature Golf with some friends. Now my other friends who I had turned down an invitation to go bowling that same day knows what I did. Now I need to explain myself vs. just going on as normal the next day.
You know this sounds like a fun project for kids with a Raspberry PI. Program the PI to receive Morse code, translate it to the actual text. Send it over the internet via SSH to an end point, where it would decode the message, and play the Morse Code back onto a ticker tape writer. All the nostalgia without having dedicated cable.
Not everything Microsoft does is to harm Linux... Most things Microsoft does doesn't even factor Linux in the equation. I am sorry Linux and Open Source isn't all the special.
Back on topic... I expect arbitration is rather expensive to operate at the trade off of being easier. Get a complaint, pay the person money to shut-up. Having this going in the court system, probably is much cheaper for the company. 1. The Victim loose their privacy in the matter, so they may be less likely to go into the court battle. 2. The Microsoft may be able to make the accused person free so they would need to deal with the court battle hire his own lawyers vs. having Microsoft deal with it. 3. If Microsoft is involved in the case there is still chances they will win. 4. Politically Microsoft looks like the progressive good guy. 5. Microsoft may have faith in its culture. Apple and Google are known for it Brogrammers, while Microsoft may be better in its diversity. Giving their competitors a black eye, due to their own faults.
However, the White House isn't a trustworthy source. With a president with record low approval ratings, trying to make a bad enemy for us to unite against, does make political sense.
While there are some other groups involved, so it may be actual, but in this day in age Citing the White House is like Citing a You Tube comment.
If you are called an ISP then you should only be responsible for the level 1-3. The hire levels 4-7 are outside of the domain, and in general do not require the same level of infrastructure support. Slashdot can moderate down or even delete my comment so it isn't read, even if my comment was legal. Because I am able to post my view in an other forum, or in general being able make my own site relatively inexpensively. Today for the ISP we are limited in choices, hence why Net Neutrality is important. In my area I have 3 options, Cable (Spectrum) and Cell Wireless (AT&T and Verizon). In my home Cell coverage is spotty so I only have one real option. All three of these ISP sources have interests in additional services that compete against other services which do not own the infrastructure to be an ISP, and many of the ones who can may not be able to get past the local monopolies to implement. If I don't like Facebook, Google or Slashdot. I can use an other service. If I don't like my ISP well I am kinda stuck, if my ISP says I shouldn't use a service then I may not be able to do so. That is the real danger. At the moment the ISP are saying they are not planning on blocking anything, or throttling down anything. But they put in a lot of political capital to get this removed... Which make me wonder why the effort if they are not planning to do something.
A problem with that is often positions of people in power change when they get in power and exposed to the complexities of the actual situation. It is easy to say that you are going to be tough on crime, but then you realize a lot of the criminals are also victims. Or say that we are going stop using Fossil Fuels, however it is still the most energy dense, relativity save, and portable energy source, where it still has its place.
Broad Statements will make you a lair, Complex objective statements makes you sound like you don't have any principals.
I would like to agree, but watching the senate race in Alabama. The question to me becomes how bad does a person have to be to cause people to vote against their aligned party? While Doug Jones won, he won by less then 1% against a convicted pedophile? With church ministers standing up for this lowlife. How many traditional values is the population willing to give up, just for their party to win?
Now this will happen in Democratic states too, if a popular politician gets in trouble doing something, there is a huge support network trying to protect him, vilify the accusers and the messengers.
We as a nation can deal with people in power with positions that we don't agree with, however we have lost the feeling that these people are working for their constituents and their prosperity. They are in it for their own personal Ego trip Like President Trump, or for the Party Line like many of the Democratic and GOP Congressmen. This is the real tragedy of our nation. We have moved from debating policy to likability of the person, to general party alliance. So now the people in charge are just playing games with our nation to keep their power, by gerrymandering to keep their power, entertaining media show them that they are indeed pure conservative or pure liberal enough for their base, taking advantage of strongly held minority views to win elections...
That is the big problem with current news. It is often given out of context. A lot of these problems are complex with multiple factors in play often at odds with each other. News readers don’t want a wall of text or hour long episodes on the topic. So they get a quick summary to try to make it simple, a summary is what the information the journalist thinks is important, but still could leave out a lot of context.
I mean I remember the "Good Old Days" where the system would crash when you look at it wrong, or typed too fast. SQL Injection errors were common...
These bugs that came out this year, while bugs, is a far cry to the risk of trying to use a computer during the 1990's or before. I haven't seen a BSOD (or its equivalent) in nearly a decade now. These glitches that we get today, while some are serious, they are rather small in the big picture.
Language, Country or origin, and even skill to a degree doesn't really affect the quality of the software. It is management who wants the product done ASAP, setups Rigorous time lines, loosely gathered specifications, and sells the product to the market, before any single feature is tested.
In a lot of of our software, I wonder how much proof of concept code is out there without being fully fleshed out, because it technically works, however the details to prevent it from breaking and access via ways that it shouldn't be, never got allowed to test and implemented because it needed to go out the door.
You always need a Car Analogy. Without one is like a Manual Transmission car without an RPM Gage, while not required, it is kinda expected, and useful.
I tossed out Opera when they upgraded the Opera Mini with "news feeds" that cannot be disabled. Because of the following 1. I wanted to save bandwidth having news feeds counteracted that. 2. The "News" was click bait not actual news. 3. It was slowing my browsing experience.
This change from a browser company to an add company is quite apt. Because I don't care to use a browser who counteracts all their positive features with junk. So it runs poorly overall. Car Analogy: It is like having a Sports Car built with a non-detachable trailer.
Is it a bunch of Democrats moving in, or it it a bunch of republicans who are dying out? Being that the Baby boomers, who have been holding onto their jobs and pretending that 70 is the new 50 because their generation is afraid of getting old. So they are finally getting too old to work, so they are finally getting replaced by younger replacements. While may be green and over idealistic at time, also bring in a different approach to solving problems, dealing with people, and who are working hard to prevent their new homes from become an outdated mess. If a company comes in due to tax breaks. This is often a bad long term situation for a community. Living near some post industrial towns, I see the following trends. Town give new big company tax breaks to bring in such company who has a thousand jobs. Town loans out millions of dollars to prep for the influx of people and services. Company stays there for a decade then moves to the next state offering a better deal, leaving the town with 20 more years to pay off debt that they no longer have the tax base to pay it off. Many of the largest cities with booming economy are actually high tax, very blue cities. So they can have their cake and eat it too. Because although expensive to operate these cities offer many other services to these businesses, be availability to ports, close by to other companies that they can work with, large population to bring in a lot of customers. Attractive activities to attract foreign investors. Because really if you are a foreign investor who needs to go to America, what sounds better a week in New York City, a week in Los Angeles or a week in Dallas Texas?
Politicaly the next action is to push your States and federal officials to put up a bunch of consumer protection laws. ISP can’t advertise speeds faster then their throttle speeds. Block content and its reasons needs to be publicly available. Tax on ISP, Tax break (of that same amount if they follow NN principals)... They got rid of a simple rule because the GOP is against government control. So the natural action when abuse starts happening are a bunch of detailed laws targeting at ISP which are more expensive and requires more red tape.
It isn’t about if they can, but if they should. I want to be able to know what is on my system and what sites I am connecting to. Having a plug-in vs a software update is a bit different. Because the software update fixes the software while a plugin esptthe one from this article is trying to push some idea.

Yes, an animation error. Vs crashing or locking up a system.
Ok, examples of new tech?
What is the German or French equivalent to google?
