The Idea of "Need to Work" vs "Want to Work" does bring up a new level of Scarcity. How many people in the world want to be a Poet, or a Musician, or an Actor. Vs. people who really want to be an Accountant, a Security Guard, or a Plumber. People look at the Supply and Demand for work, and will choose a job that will they will be willing to tolerate for the pay. As their job they really want to do, is reserved by the people who are normally for more exceptional at it.
For some jobs like Military you will need to work up the chain of command (except for the new movie where it seems you can graduate with a high rank) But not all jobs has that Chain of command concept. If you want to be a master poet, do you need to say clean the kitchen of a current master poet.
Getting a Computer Science Degree is good, but it isn't about learning how to program in the newest hottest language. It is about Computer Science, Theory, Methodologies, Styles and Best Practices. Now this is good because it gives you a strong foundation to be a really good programmer, not sweat about learning new languages, and knowing where to focus your mental attention on (Meeting the requirements vs. Just getting it to work)
Now if you have years of experience and no degree, there could still be value in getting a degree, however chances are you would be better off just learning the language yourself. Give yourself some personal projects and work on a language you don't know.
Not all games would be simulation of reality, cartoons, or other odd characters really help get the point across.
However there are other games that would prefer more realism, and they want you to believe that you are in the game, as opposed to watching it. So you would want far more realism and break the Uncanny Valley. Right now for more realistic stuff, it is usually in the form of cut scenes with live action actors, however that doesn't really help the game, as it forces you to follow a particular chain of events.
The assumption of this article is based on the idea that an engineer can continually grow within the company as an engineer and switching to management is only a sideway path towards promotion.
Sure I hear a lot of people going, if you are a really good engineer, you don't want to be a manager anyways, however there is reality of life. Engineering jobs are not what they use to be, the Pay isn't as great, less benefits, and getting raises will slow down after you get to a particular level. These Engineers have family's to feed, there are hobbies they want to maintain, they want to improve their lives over time. In essence live the American Dream. However Government/Corporate/Education/Not For Profit for Union and Non-Union organizations, all tend to keep a job hierarchy structure. Position X gets paid through y+a, but manager of position X gets paid y+(a-b) through y+(a+c). The manager will normally get paid more then the people he is managing. and his manager will get paid more then him. Very few organizations will allow an engineer to be making more than his manager or his director or his VP.
So after you say get a title of Sr. Engineer, you will get stuck at a particular pay grade, (you could look for a job elsewhere however Sr. Engineers there is a point where you will be making too much to move along, then you are stuck) Management unfortunately doesn't have those barriers, if you do your job well enough you can go from Manager, to Director to VP, to CTO/CIO to CEO. You may not prefer these jobs, but you are getting paid more.
I personally think the reality sucks. A good engineer who love to be an engineer should be granted promotional without limit, based on his work and value to the organization. And should be valued like the other big guys in the organization.
However there are a bunch of forces that caused this, and would require pain on all levels to fix. Do you as an engineer really want to quantify your value to your work so you can show that you need a promotion, how do you factor in positive traits like getting along with others, team work, and open to suggestions, if say in a brain storming session you came up with an incomplete idea, then an other engineer using your idea changed his train of thought and was able to come with a better design that could make the company billions. We could get paid like the CEO with stock options, however that is putting more risk on us to suffer threw the hard time and hoping for a greater reward in the future.
The storm just started hitting the east coast this morning and we already have more snow then you guys, while there are a lot of school closings there are still a bunch open, and heck I am still at work today too...
Sure it sucks, but you just kinda deal with it. I though that was the red state motto?
Just like the flawed science in climate change and evolution.
The difference between conservatives and liberals with science is that conservatives refuse that something will be bad for them vs liberals refuse to believe that something new is not harming them.
They are both refusing to believe science because it messes up their world view.
I never stated that astronomy and astrology were the same... However Astrology was an earlier "study" of the stars, that allowed the back bone for real science of astronomy. As most of us look into space and we see the stars, we go well isn't that nice, however really sit back and make much sense out of it. Astrology was the first attempt to really make sense out of it. Its conclusions were wrong, but at least it fond a pattern in the seemingly random sky. This allowed the backbone for Astronomy to really understand what is happening.
Just remember 50% (Or damn close) of the population has below average intelligence. So you take half of the population with below average intelligence, then you add in a few percentage of people who just don't know better. Then you have the majority who say something stupid.
Also it depends on how you word things. The question of how scientific is astrology is, Very, Somewhat, very Little, not at all. Could lead people who actually do not believe in astrology to answer the question to imply that they do.
How Scientific is Astrology? well Lets compare it to the scientific Method Formulation of a question: Can and external force predict my future? Check Hypothesis: The position of the stars and planets may give my my future? Check Prediction: If we have x combination then a person should be like that? Check Testing: We have millions of people doing this for thousands of years? Check Analysis: Well we got some people who says it works. But we don't have any fixed numbers? No Check 4 out of 5, 80% That sound rather scientific to me. Lets mark me under somewhat.
Lets not forget about the scientific advancements that astrology has created. 1. Using constellation to help track and locate stars. Otherwise it would be like looking at a random sample. 2. Seeing that Planets move differently then other stars, which allowed us to help comprehend the model of our solar system and the universe. 3. Seeing the trends on how constellations change due to the seasons. allowing us to measure our path around the sun...
Sure the idea of actually telling the future is bunk. However there is a bunch of advancements in science from it. Besides it is a good way to convince your local king, to pay to look at the stars.
We often get too jaded from the news about the worst of humanity. Sure they are more then their fare share of bad people. However most people if given the opportunity will do the right thing, or at least something neutral.
Now if you found a pair of Google Glasses, would the first thing on your mind would be messing with the guys personal information, I mean he just lost an expensive device, messing with him will just add insult to injury. Secondly Google loves to track. How long do you think it will take for Google/Police to track you down, especially for a relatively rare device, which is expensive (aka Grand Theft). If you did mess with the guy, how much more trouble would you be.
In short it is easier and safer to do the right thing than to be malicious.
Now if it was a Wallet with $1,500 in unmarked bills... That may be a different case, and would take a person with a strong/practiced morality to resist it.
GNU/Linux (As opposed to say Android) is general good for the following: Servers, Embedded Systems, In general being able to run software where the Operating system is out of the way, and strictly focusing on the application.
Back in them olden days, this would have been accomplished with MS DOS, but sense then, windows usually want to let the user know that they are in windows, unless you have to program a full screen app, then you have to deal with all the other stuff in windows. Linux can be stripped down to the bare minimum. It is free so no license issues. So you set it up to do one thing it will do it well.
Well how many Republican voters don't vote in the Election because they think all the candidates are batshit crazy. And if you look at the past presidential elections the more moderate of the candidates seem to have win. McCain, was considered rather moderate republican. However due to his age (people feared he could die in office) and having Palin (who is too far right) as the VP scared voters off... Combined with the Mess blamed on Bush. Romney also won the primaries was a rather moderate republican too, compared to the other nutters. However he messed up by trying to befriend the far right, and couldn't back track to his more moderate ways. His etechasketch just didn't work.
The big problem I see is that they don't know the real issues that are affecting the populous. They figure because a lot of people don't like Obamacare, that it will be enough. Well it isn't sure it could be the majority doesn't care for it, however it may not be enough to change voters minds.
A lot of the Republicans Cluelessness is based on bad data. The main issue is that the Republicans are supporting the base of the groups that yell the loudest, and think they are supporting a majority.
Part (there are other reasons too but that will get onto political rambling) of the reason why Kerry Lost to Bush, is because the Democrats didn't collect their data as well as the Republicans, and let the Liberal Crazies push the agenda, making Kerry look out of touch, while the Republicans seemed to more controlled and moderate.
The democrats haven't been winning by huge landslides either. A small tweak from the Republicans stance, say being more open to Gay Marriage, or actually getting their act together on a good immigration policy could be enough to change the tide.
Sure most of us Slashdotters are based in Blue States, with a strong blue influence. But there are plenty of moderates out there who may be right leaning except for that one particular issue. and if the Republicans find that issue they could get in control.
There is a heck of a lot of investments to an organization that no one trusts. They may not trust US banks, but they trust them more than most other countries.
I don't get why they are trying to catch up, banks are dropping the ball here, and they should focus on exceeding the rest of the world.
Why is the US behind everyone, well because we were first to come up with the initial infrastructure, by the time something new came along, we had a large complete infrastructure. So now the infrastructure is out of date, this happens. But when it does we need to try to invest into the next step, not the current, otherwise we will always be catching up.
Almost nothing back. But they did contribute something.
If it were under GPL these companies would have avoided it, and gave nothing back. If you want to scare a business who's main business model is selling software licenses, is to try to convince them to use a GPL alternative.
I want to be sure I don't see anything even with a telescope. I think a lot of us are on the similar line of thinking.
If you think you can Mine the moon effectively and affordability, go all for it... However just don't mine the side that we look up at. Do the side facing away from us.
A single mine on the earth facing side of the moon probably wouldn't be a big deal... However as it grows and we add more lights, and traffic, we will slowly change it face, a sparkly new moon, Some creators with road marks in them.... In general a way to screw up the night sky.
As a rule, I support the idea of making a new OS just for the sake of it. But the important thing to realize most of these will never really get too far as in terms of market share.
Linux success was by luck. It came out when BSD had a lot of serious licencing issues and a big demand for something free, it was developed to a point of being useful fairly rapidly and got a lot of attention. At the same time the 32bit computers for home users were available, and people were jumping on getting a Real OS to do real work on. MS/DOS and Windows 3.1 wasn't a good option, for real work, other solutions just costed way too much money.
Hurd which was made during the same time BSD was having their issues, however it was more of am ambitious project, and couldn't get in during that opening which Linux did.
Now BSD with Free/Open/Net being based on original Unix code, came out of the Licencing mess as an open solution, with some still bad taste in peoples mouth. However they came out a bit more stable than Linux at that time. Where xBSD was being used in a business production settings, for a long time, while Linux matured and took over.
There is a lot of flamewars about GNU being superior then the new BSD license. Saying Linux is proof of this. I would disagree GNU and BSD are both Open Enough standards for general adoption, and Linux success was based on getting in at the right time. Otherwise you would expect HURD to be nearly as possible as BSD is now.
Their problem with running Windows app on a Phone and Tablet. 1. Most of these apps were designed to run on a PC, Mouse, Keyboard, Large Screen. Having used RDP and Citrix apps on tablets, let me tell you these PC apps are just hard to use.
2. Performance. This is less of an issue, especially with older stuff. However these programs could take up a little more resources then expected and use up battery power.
3. Security. Backwards compatibility on a locked device like a phone, is a massive disaster waiting to happen. PC you have more direct access to the hardware allowing to fix problems, as well control how well things are locked down. But Windows Apps are the Following... 32bit DLL, that references an old 16bit dll, which was designed to work on a shell to MS DOS, which had no memory protection at all. A lot of the old apps with native compatibility could be a major problem.
Dear Slashdot, PLEASE PUT BETA INTO PRODUCTION NOW. So we can have all these idiots boycott your site, and while their in the middle of their Nerdrage. We can have our normal discussions going about.
It is like the parent who is the real problem, not whatever stupid UI decisions slashdot makes. Because you all know we will get use to it in a few weeks, and wouldn't really want to go back. These missing feature some will probably be added back others will be gone, but that is OK.
