At some point maybe. But I see the PC (including Laptops) to migrate dominance positions to follow the same patterns at the Mainframe (which are still not dead yet)
1970's Mainframe was absolute King No PC to speak of. 1980's Mainframe is king PC was a toy with a few Business applications 1990's Mainframe is considered dieing PC's began to dominate small and midsize companies reducing the needs to big expensive mainframes. Used for Big companies. 2000's Mainframes are still there, PC's are now indespensable and used by most businesses (the PC based servers has taken over the mainframe for most new task) Ultra Mobile Devices are appearing but mostly a toy with a few Business applications. 2010's Mainframes are limited to a few Old Legacy Stuff (too expensive to move off) or some very detailed performance related stuff (Modern Mainframes) Mobile devices get more ingrained into the business and every day use....
Now I see the PC moving away from the personal computer and to more of a high performance workstation usage. This will used mainly by software developers, and engineers for CAD and other high performance work. while the Mobile stuff will dominate every man Computing. As for the mainframe more old legacy systems will go away but still have a market for the really high performance needs.
I think it is time for Slashdot to limit all these Firefox "major" release articles. Because the team just be decided to be stupid with their number scheme, it doesn't mean every new number is really newsworthy.
Why not get creative and just use old cell phones. People are just tossing these things out. they have a good battery and some you can actually program. plus send data back to your base unit wirelessly.
The problem with activist organizations is often they don't know that they should stop and they have achieved their goals.
This is what happens. They start out with a simple achievable goal. They will often get to 80% of that goal, and they have a bigger pot of money. With that money they add more goals and keep on adding more and more stuff to their platform until they have a huge organization that in order to satisfy and make happy would be impossible.
PETA ok you are against fur coats. Getting fur coats out of fashion and/or legally banned is obtainable. Getting all of us to stop eating meat dump our beloved pets to the wild to be prey for wild animals. And dumping cattle who will die within one week without milking. That is getting more and more impossible. However there is still fights so they get more funding.
For most activist organization they start out with their hearts in the right place, but then they get funding, and if they admit it or not, greed takes over and they are working more to keep the organization going and less about actually solving the problems they wanted to solve.
It is made up. These are not animals, these are Pocket Monsters. Monsters not animals. Monsters have magical abilities. So they can fit in a ball and like it. Why because the creators imaginations says they do. They like to battle with each other and don't get hurt, why because the creators imaginations says they do. In fiction you create your own universe its one morals and rules.
Doing such things in real life is bad, but in fiction it is ok. We should spend less time bitching about the what the fiction is maybe teaching our children but teach children the difference between Non-Fiction, Fiction, and Metaphor
This is messing with the capitalistic economic model people will still want those goods, and people will be willing to sell them, but they will do it over the black market. Because the legit way is too costly.
The black market isn't always for shady product, but products that you cannot obtain legally. For example in New York the biggest Black Market Activity is in unpasteurized milk. Why because there is a good number of "organic" lovers who would rather have their milk unprocessed and they say it tastes better, and is better for you, and by New York Law milk can only be sold pasteurized. Hence black market activity. So saying you cannot resell a product and people wants it. It will be done under the table.
Now the problem with black market is the buyer and seller loose legal protection. So the seller can rip you off and you have no legal recourse. Or the buyer can do something else to you and in order to get the guy in trouble you will need to admit to breaking the law. This is a problem with prostitution because it is illegal if the women are mistreated they do not have many options for them.
Yes a major change every 17 years is just too much for us to handle.
The problem with keeping the old interface there is a point where your application adds features that the old UI scheme will get more clumsy. Or just the way your product is being used has changed. So a new UI can help match with the new features and new usage of the system
There is having a different opinion, then there is just being pig headed and just scared of change.
I have Windows 8 RC on my PC. At first I was bothered by the home screen. After a while I began to be ok with it. Is it perfect, No, I do have a few gripes about its design. However by putting myself in a mindset "Well lets get use to it first before I begin to hate it" I found that it is just as cumbersome as the start bar.
I have a Prius I actually average 55mpg. I have a 30 mile drive. Up and down hills, with an average speed of 35mph. On my Way to work I get about 60mpg and on my way back I get about 54mpg, when I do my non work driving here and There I average about 48 mpg.
The thing about the Hybrid, it is all about how you drive it. I am a computer scientist myself, so after a while checking out the displays I more or less pegged down the algorithm, so I take advantage of maximizing fuel. Keeping the right amount of pressure on the gage, you find a sweet spot where you have just enough power to get up that hill, and keep your speed constant.
If you keep it, people will keep on using it. Windows 8 Goal is to get Laptop and PC manufacturers develop more tablets and touch enabled devices. If you kept the start bar, PC makers will keep on making normal PC's and slowly die away with other OS's like Android and iOS taking over.
If only we had a process that could check the food to see if it is fit for human consumption or not. Lets say a process where we start with a question, then we make an educated guess of the answer, we do test to validate or invalidate our test. We repeate the process until we come up with a solid model.
Lets call this process "science", yea it is a funny name. But instead of just going well it is a byproduct of industry it must be bad, we can see if there is anything harmful.
As a non-smoker (I can't even stand the smell of smoke on the person), And I supported the laws that banned smoking from work places and from bars in NY. However I think this finally crossed the line. Tobacco is still a legal substance and to test employees to see if they are smoking on their free time is crossing the line.
What is next fire employees who do not have the correct Body Mass Index (Because they should be eating healthy) or how about just firing people who got cancer or AIDS because chances are they made something that was an unhealthy life style decision.
You must have had better Wires than I had. I actually have had better experience with Cell Phones then with LAN Lines that are full of static, and cannot handle data past 9600bps.
Here is the question were they otherwise the same?
Organic vs Other. Same milk fat percentage (or where you comparing 2% with natural 4%) Was it homogenized, or did you just get a nice drink of cream that forms on top. Was it pasteurized? Or do you like the taste over being sick for a few days. Were they in the same type of containers. I find that Glass packed liquids taste better than plastic.
Environmentalism 101: Chapter 1: Whatever choice you make, there will be a trade off cost with it. The goal is to make sure you get the right balance where the benefits are recognized and the tradeoffs are effecting areas that do not make the sum of your advantage worse.
The Automobile was touted as an environmental friendly tool for mankind. The problem with the environment back in the early 1900's was dealing with tons of Horse droppings, which invited illnesses in the area, plus it didn't smell very good. The tradeoff of a Toxic Gas seemed like a good idea at the time.
During this time we have made this gas less toxic, but still it isn't that good. But the side effect was this allowed for more cars pushing the gasses to dangerous level.
So now we are trying to find a cleaner way of dealing with this... Some options will concentrate the Toxic side effects into a localized area Say A nuclear power plant offering electricity, with the bad stuff stored in some mountain. Others options is to spread the damage across a wider range, in hope nature will rebuild in that area. Cutting down trees, so you can put a wind turbine, however if we need more and more Wind energy we will cut down more trees and create more environmental problems.
Now the Trade offs are not one for one, but need to be considered, evaluated and changed overtime. The problem with fossel fuels is that we haven't been seriously looking at alternatives to diversify the tradeoffs that happen
The Dyson sphere is a massive engineering project. It would take a very very advanced civilization to complete it, using a lot of energy just to build it, taking a long time to do such work. Chances are they will kill each other off before they did such a project.
I agree. We as a culture needs to work harder to separate fantasy from reality. We are living in a world of potential fear because every bad guy seems to have these devious plot to make our lives miserable.
We can't let our kids outside without intent supervision (heck laws are getting in place that the parent is in trouble if they let their kids go out and play without supervision) because there could be a Sexual Predator just around the corner ready to snatch your child. Or a teenager who is pushing you kid to take drugs.
The people who we have political differences are somehow part of a grand plot to make our lives miserable. Just for the sake of it.
We don't live in a world where there are good people and bad people. We live in a world where Good People can do bad things, and Bad People try to do good things. We always had this. We hear more about it then before but it has always happened... Back in the 1950 there may had been a reason why Uncle Joe wasn't invited to Thanksgiving the next year and we don't see him anymore and your little Sister is happy for that.
Maple Syrup is a major industry for Canada. However it is a fickle industry.
You can't grow hundred year old maple trees in a greenhouse, they are exposed to normal weather conditions. Also they can only harvest for a short period of time a year. So having the reserve will allow them to keep supply all year long, and cover when there is a bad year. If supply get too low the prices will go too high, and the market will switch to substitutes. American Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and New York Maple Syrup are quite good too. Then you have the cheap Colored Sugar Syrup.
For the parent (a European) Real Maple Syrup is really expensive. And the Good Stuff is actually very good.
You get a hold of a tanker. Heck the guy could have worked for someone security recogonized, and worked twice as hard. One tank for the company one tank for me. You drive up and say, I am here for a drop off. You go in and instead of pump to your truck to the reserve you go the other way.
Being only Maple syrup, I doubt there was massive security.
While, I know you are making a drug reference joke. However that is the main issue I see with medical Marijuana. There is little testing to see what is the right amount for actually medical benefits and the amount that will just get you stoned.
Too much coffee keeps you up all night. You spend the night in bed awake and board. What actions that happen during that period to try to exhaust yourself is up to your imagination.

There is a difference between, complaining about something that was poorly done, vs. something that is done differently.

Stop Bitching and complaining about every change in technology and get use to the the Damn thing.
I remember all the bitching and moaning about the Start Button when it was created. And now is is some God Sent UI that you can't live without.
If you get get Windows 8. you will figure it out shortly and you are back to normal.

Not really, they found the study flawed... However the premus may still be correct.

It is in the $400-$700 range. Compared to ultra mobile devices in the past that costed over $2000 it is cheap.
