Sorry... No it isn't. In the grand scheme of things license cost is just a drop in the bucket. Also the license cost for most of the products are absorbed in the cost of the equipment. If it was just license price was the major issue Linux would have regained massive market share when Windows XP came out.
Fine, I am going to change my programming language to a Process Automation and Logic System. So I can copyright it. Or better yet, Ill just won't share it with Europe, and the USA will benefit while Europe gets nothing... Europe is dying anyways, no need to expand to a dying market.
Company A produces a better product then Company B. Company A has better marketing then Company B. Company A prices are nearly the same as Company B.
Company A for the Win.
No Conspiracy, No Evil, Their customers want a good product at a fair price, That is what they provide. Right before Intel released their CORE processors AMD had a very strong showing. Then Intel released a much better product and they took their #1 spot back and put distance behind their competitor. Now AMD will need to make a much better product, Market their Product better, and/or Lower their costs.
Most of those are based on conspiracy thinking, where evidence to show counter to the belief are due to a group manipulating the evidence to keep people off. When they are in that mindset it is near impossible to change their mind. Creationists - God or the Devil, created the other evidence to through us off. Although I would think God and the Devil would benefit from a creationist world. God because it is proof of his glory, and the Devil to show that God created the world just so you can suffer.
9/11 truthers/moon landing - The Government is hiding the evidence. The bigger the conspiracy the more people are needed to support it and keep it under wraps becomes more difficult and needs more people... There is also a big difference being a low man on a top-secrete project and a low man in a conspiracy. The Top-Secrete project you just have to be quite about it, do not confirm or deny, they know you are working on a top-secrete project however they don't know what you are doing. A conspiracy you will need to Lie. That is more difficult, because it openers up to people asking more probing questions, that will lead to disjoint truths.
Anti-vaccinations - Big corporate America is hiding the truth to sell more vaccinations... Why aren't they doing something similar for their products that they make more money off of. I mean there were some huge drug recalls of very profitable drugs that nearly bankrupts some organizations.
The real rubbing point now is that the extent of damage of Global Warming, had been over exaggerated by scientists. In order to scare people to abstain from using their cars, they showed their research and pushed 4 or 5 sigmas out in their statistics, and implied it as fact.
Before you go to crazy... America's decline, compared to the problems in Europe, and Japan?
China is rapidly growing but it isn't quite there competing with the U.S. and a lot of the problems are finally getting to them too.
We really don't have much to show that we are in a decline. Yes we are in a big recession, but if you stop whining and get to work it will be over sooner.
The Discovery Channel was cool 20 years ago, Then I got a College Degree in Science, and it got less so, then I got a Masters Degree and the information seems even more lame and basic.
The cable channels don't go into much depth mostly because the average viewer has the Scientific/Mathematics skills of a 6th grader. Going into Algebra, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra or even Statistics. Is too much for people who are Scarred of Math.
That is always a problem with Science Fiction. You have a writing paradox where the man from the future/advanced race. Has technology far exceeding our normal understanding, however if you use such technology you are using techno-babble to solve your plots.
Lets say you have a Multi-Tool and you are thrown back to the Stone age Cave man. In their mindset your Multi-tool may not seem like a threatening object, small leather pouch. Compared to the Large clubs, and spears with sharp (largish) arrow heads this collapsed multi-tool may not seem like a threat, and say you are locked into a wooden cage. You could just use the saw attachment to cut the wood and your free. If this was a stone age science fiction it would be like you multi-tool has a tool for every situation.
Linux works great for Grandma, Linux works great for IT folks.
Linux sucks in the middle. That is why Linux is Strong in the Server area and in the Mobile Phone area. However lacking in the desktop area.
The key features for the Middle, that isn't really all that easy in Linux. Adding new hardware. Some stuff just works, other stuff is a real big pain. Mac and Windows (due to its popularity mostly) has the hardware vendors supply them with drivers, or when you get the hardware you have an easy to use install for the drivers. Linux you may be able to find the drivers, but you have many versions and you need to do a lot of research to see which one is going to do what you need it to do.
For example my Wifes Dell Inspiron 9 mini (Netbook) with Ubuntu display 800x600 while the screen native resolution is 1024x600... I cannot use the normal GUI to fix that. The instruction on how to do so, are cryptic and sometimes don't work. while the 800x600 stretched bugs the heck out of me. My Wife doesn't care, so I wont do much to fix it. That is after I spent time to get sound working on it, after an upgrade.
I am sorry but compared to Windows and OS X, Linux is a Free Desktop OS and it shows. Put it in a server great, put it in a phone just as good. The desktop is the troubled area.
Part of the issue I think, is they are spending too much time copying what Microsoft does or what Apple does, and the Open Source democratic structure doesn't have a few good people to say it sucks or it is good.
There goes the idea of adding new features to your OS. Lets say, my OS I wanted to create a new feature lets just say this feature interacts with your brainwave patterns and interprets this into flat text. Ok I have the feature, now Programmers want to to access that feature and use it in there programs... But wait, they can't because their is a Law preventing me from doing this, unless I am willing to go threw the process of regulating it make sure my API is compatible and give my competitors all my trade secrets so they can implement this as well.
Not really, once you remove the turbines, damage may have been done, you may have changed your treeline structure and it will take many years to get back to normal.
Well if you change enough of the local areas then you could effect a global scale. Everything you choose has a trade-offs. The best defense isn't "green energy" but energy diversity. So we limit the hazards of our trade-offs and if one trade-off becomes too expensive then you can switch to an other one without have to do a major change.
That and combined with the GPL is becoming more and more anti-business. Even if you do not want to profit off your software, Most. People want it used widely. If your software is designed for business use if you GPL it you have already alienated your user base, as when it is GPL there is a responsibly, that you need to maintain that other license don't have. Especially if you choose to use parts of the software with the product you are making, you need to make sure that you are in compliance. And with the most vocal GPL supporters begin very anti-capitalistic, means that GPL code is becoming more and more off limits for business. So it comes down to the fact a lot of software written today which can be open source are business use systems. Thus are not being released under the GPL as it isn't business friendly. Back in the late 90's early 2000's the GPL wasn't enforced so strictly so companies felt more comfortable using and supporting GPL software. However the late 2000's the GPL community has been much more active to enforce the GPL, as well GPL 3 was created as a response to punish companies like TiVo who found loopholes in the GPL to their advantage. So if the company has a product that they want to open source (they have a lot of good reasons to do so) they will choose other licenses that is less risky to them.
Who can take your trash out? Stomp it down for you? Shake the plastic bag and do the twisty thingy too? THE GARBAGE MAN!! I think it was more to the point going after him would be a huge PR Issue.
1. Sue a 92 year old man 2. Sue a World War II vet. 3. Sue someone giving something to the troops that their own personal expense. 4. Do this during an election year.
Being Old, people can assume you just out of touch, at best, or that you just don't quite know what is going on. (Old people know this and play the act to get what they want)
Being a WWII vet, Society owes you for your help to save the world from Nazi and the Javanese war machine.
Giving to the troops, Every honest american should support the troops, if you don't then you are a Hippy Communist.
Election year. Those senators who are rerunning will not offer you much support, for they don't want the opponent to show that you are against the Elderly, Vets who Support the Troops.
I think you are missing the point this idea wasn't implemented. It was a brain storming idea, that had some merit, they did some more research on it and they finally decided to say no to the idea.
The best part is because it is patented that means other OS makers will have to buy the idea from Apple, so they probably won't go that route.
Why did they probably decided not to?
1. It would clutter the "Appearance of the OS". Apple will not even put an Intel Inside sicker on their Systems, to have someone putting ugly adds on the OS. 2. It would be used for headless servers. True, however with the GPL being stricter, and knowledge of alternative licenses, the GPL is less viable.
That and combined with the GPL is becoming more and more anti-business. Even if you do not want to profit off your software, Most. People want it used widely. That is Ok because Math and CS majors look down on CPEs/EEs
