It is funny how people who seem to get a little power, think they are the most powerful person in the world. I see this with Middle managers who think they are Hot stuff, because they are high enough for the CEO to pay attention to him, or have a team with some control. They just get mad with power. When you go and start thinking how powerful you are, that usually means you have lost your way, and you are in too much of a power kick to get any real work done.
This is Trumbull, CT. IT is too wealthy of a community for the police to abuse the citizens. Go to a bigger city like Hartford, or a poor town like Thomiston, then you can get things like that.
But that's ok you are being mined other ways. Well you can compete with free, if you couldn't then how did Apple rise from near bankruptcy. When you had Linux growing, during that same time.
I would argue we never really had privacy. Back in the pre-internet age if you were to go to the store and buy embarrassing products, the clerk could have been the town gossip, and by the end of the week you are an outcast because of some odd purchase.
While now we are collecting more information, the advertisers are smart enough not to abuse the information, because if you make Jane embarrassed because she bought a product or has an issue which a product can help, you risk loosing a customer.
I think this may be more for food prep. Sometimes people will use their hands when they are supposed to use a spoon, thus contaminated the food. T t could be used to help enforce proper handling of food in food service industries.
Oddly enough I expect the unrealistic portrait to being thin=beautiful causes obesity.
For a lot of people when they realize they cannot reach the level of beuity, they give up and let themselves go.
A lot people are polarized in their thinking, if I can be thin, I might as well get use to being fat.
Showing people of healthy weight will keep expectations at a good level, and they don't feel bad about not trying to get too thin.
Where I live, If I call the police it will take them about 20 minutes to get to my house. Leaving the offender to get off and escape.
We need to protect our property, the authorities are unable to fully protect us, so we need to protect ourselves. As a private citizen most of us do not have the resource to restrain criminals and often the criminals will be more protected then us. So if they enter our domain, we should have the right to use deadly force, as the alternatives is risk to our own lives and property.
Criminals need to know this too. If they break in they could be severely wounded or killed, if wounded they will then probably still spend time and jail, while the protector goes of Scott Free.
Well for things like you need to make sure your software up to date who are you going to blame if it goes wrong.
Do you blame the IT workers who know about the problem, but their bosses don't give them permission to run the update and work on higher priority product.
Do you blame the Bosses who get heat from the key users every time the system is down for maintenance, and if there is an issue they will get more heat for it.
Do you blame the Key Users for not willing to pay the extra money to follow IT suggestions on keeping a better up time.
How about the vendor who didn't put out the Check list to say that new version work. Or if your new version doesn't work they won't support you.
People go into IT because they like technology. People in IT end up not using technology because they are too busy running the company because they are the only department that talks to other departments.
Movies like the Avengers will tend to do well vs. Piracy, because these high effect movies, look really good with all the sound, and large screens... If you pirate it, you get a shaky little display with perhaps stereo sound.
Now movies with a plot, may be more of a target to piracy. As we are more interested in the story and not the experience. But Hollywood doesn't put too many of those movies out any more, and will reserve these shows to DVD or TV production. Just because they can make money off of those that way.
The big screen, is getting more limited to those High End Fancy Effect films. They often will take some medium effect films and play them for a week, just to give them official movie credits, but their goal is to make money off the DVD/BlueRays.
I think I would be able to get from my House to Work fine... Getting back would be the killer.
30 miles mostly downhill, is much easier then 30 miles uphill.
Humans are the key component to global warming, in order to fix this people have to change... People don't like that.
Global warming supporters tend to not really know the science and turn it into fear mongering taking the 3rd or 4th sigma out as a high probability of happening, scaring people to change their ways or else something will happen soon, it didn't happen soon... People don't like to be mislead.
There is a poor job in educating the masses the difference between global warming and local weather trends, so people see local weather isn't that much different, especially if you get a real cold winter, or a mild summer... This adds to the impression that they are being lied too.
Many of the proposed changes to help fix global warming, requires reducing factors that will hurt the economy... In many peoples lifetime they remember the Communist Scare, where the Soviets were trying to discredit the benefits of a capitalism, if they knew about global warming back in the 1950's they would have had a field day with it.
The global warming unfortunately had became a political debate, not a scientific discussion, So those people who were afraid of the actions went to their politicians (And the ones that fear changing their actions are people who work in the areas that causes most of the green house gasses, and/or live in more rural areas where such areas makes it hard to find alternative energy sources, in rural areas) Who tend to be republicans. So now we have a bunch of republicans fighting the Global Warming, to keep their jobs, and the Democrats are trying to defend the science to keep their jobs (Democrats are popular in Cities and College areas). Thus the new debate. I am not congratulating the Left of being pro-science, they are just giving science the mouse service because their areas where the voters are are more pro-science.
Well it could be.
$400 for a bike, gets you a decent quality bike, that should give you years of quality service.
If you live close to your work, or do not have much of a need to travel more then 5 miles to any location, you are probably saving a lot of money using a bike.
I would love to bike to work... However I live 30 miles from my house. The area where I work isn't a nice place to live, the nice areas near the area are too expensive. So in terms of money it is cheaper for me to have a car and not bike, even with the high gas prices.
what the fuck hardware are you running? or are you just stuck in the 90's
I am sorry to say while Linux has improved its hardware support, I find that it runs into those wierdest gaps in its support.
A video driver that refuses to detect native resolution, or leaves pixel droppings.
A wifi card that does WEP but not WPA. Things like that. Most people do not find a PC that will meet Linux compatibility. But get a PC that works, then later try Linux, only to find those little glitches that makes it feel cheap. It is usually the driver and hardware companies not being forthcoming. But still it doesn't work right people won't like it.
Insulting people who report hardware problems helps no one. If you want a world where Linux is common on the desktop you are going to get your head out of the blind zealotry, admit your OS of choose isn't perfect and help fix it.
I think it is the Left that is big on NASA cuts, as NASA is under mostly military spending.
The problem is a failure to educate the public about the importance of these areas, If you leave it to average voter they will see NASA as a waste of tax payer money, because the government does nothing to really explain the importance to the general public.
It was easy during the Cold war where we can go In Your Face USSR... But now our greatest enemies cannot even get a missile to go a few hundred miles, it seems less of a priority.
Why does big business have control much greater then the government... It is easy, they know how to market to the average Joe.
Exactly the point isn't that he is unqualified to lead a company without the CS degree. But the fact that he said he had one when he doesn't. While someone doesn't need a CS degree to lead a company. When hiring it could be considered a bit of a Plus that this person at least has an inkling on what goes on in a company. The fact that he does or doesn't have a CS degree once you get to those levels doesn't count for much. But the fact that he continued the lie does.
The CEO for a public traded company is the face for the company, they need to (at least publicly) appear to be the better person, Smarter, Harder Working, and Honest. (Pause for a movement for you to laugh at sentence) The problem is that they are just as human as everyone of us, and makes mistakes. However you are not being paid the huge bucks to make the mistakes that the rest of the people do, so if your ethics lapse while you are a CEO and people get found out, well you should be fired. That is why you get the big bucks, to cover for the risk that any lapse in judgement could get you fired. So I say fire the CEO for this. Because he lied on his resume and you don't want your company to be a company of lyers.
Europe just acts like they are grown up and can create a liberal organization, then they have the US fight for them, so the US takes all the heat they get all the benefits.
Yea, the world isn't fare is it.
The United States has the Worlds Largest Military. So you need to tread lightly when attacking the US.
Not that I am supporting the idea to pre-emptive attack Iraq (and I am quite angry how loose the information on the WMD was).
However you don't mess with the USA. And they are not going to just take it and go "Well I Guess we had it coming"
No this is the normal squabbling that goes on all the time. I don't see it as a precursor to a world war.
Iran, North Korea: They are basically loose cannons placed in locations where we have a lot of interests. They have different agendas.
Pakistan, Russia and China: We are not enemies with those countries. But we don't fully trust them and they don't fully trust them. Russia and China are big players in their area and really don't want the US in their face. Pakistan, is a mixed bag, they know they need us, they just don't like how we do it.
I don't see a World War III coming from this. They are not united against us and our allies, They have very different agenda and don't really want to work with each other.
Of course it is really funny that a lot of these Protestant Christian religions are doing the same things the Catholic Church did centuries ago, that caused them to break away from the church.
I don't see to much mindless bashing on the Media Access Control. However I am not a big fan that companies buy big blocks of them. It hinders security as the viable MAC address is known and they can figure out what company owns the network card, which could be used for company based attacks.
Most small religious websites do not have the resources or the skill sets to keep it clean.
Here is how it works...
Someone from the youth ministry (probably age 14-16) setups the web site for the church.
They keep it going for a year.
Then they graduate, start other activities and the web site just kinda sits there. Someone may be skilled to keep the data up to date but no one ever really knows how to maintain a website. The box runs and collect dust unpatched until it gets hit with viruses and worms.
No one knows there is a problem or how to fix it.

I am not fan of RMS ideas, but really should you use a first post to insult the man?

It comes down to the more popular your OS is, the more problems you will get with security.
More of a circular display. Cool, but not yet practical.

Your assessment isn't broad enough.
The Gimp <strike>Users website</strike> is a design trainwreck.
Which US Law that is violating our first Amendment rights that would require B & N to take it down...
Perhaps B & N is worried about something.
