Exactly there is actually a problem in some "First World Countries" that their population is dropping. Because their lives are not so filled with death, they feel they have the time to wait to have a child when it is the most convent or not at all, and limit their children to 1 or 2.
Of course there is this funny concept that these countries at the same time complain both about their population from birth dropping being a bad thing, and the population influx from immigrants being a bad thing as well.
I guess population growth is only good for these countries if you are white.
I am not a gamer, and I actually like those small flash games (not of facebook as much) I play them for about an hour, get board with them and don't feel bad for not playing it because I didn't pay $60 for it.
Well I would expect that a lot of the credit goes to new tools available, that allows more rapid development.
For me to sit down and make a game like Supper Mario brothers can probably take about 8 hours of coding and and other 8 hours making the levels, and the 24 hours making the graphics to be used. I am also not a game developer. I do boring business apps. Compared to 25 years ago we now have tools that makes this development easier and hardware that is more forgiving. So for the Platform game graphics. You makes the sprites in a PNG file. For the maps you just use a good old text editor having each character mean a different cell. Then you code some of the basic physics into some cells. Today this will be a small fun little job. But back 25 years ago it was a major project. First the hardware was limited so you couldn't just go and dump a whole level into memory, and you could only store so much sprites to use and if they are animated that is more storage. So you need tricks like changing their pallets (Green Shells vs Red Shells) or display the sprite in mirror image. You need to preload part of the level before they get displayed but you need to have it timed just right, a text file for the level is way to inefficient so many bits wasted so you need to store the data more efficiently. Dont forget after you have been there you need to free the memory. All this using machine level coding. So the old games took much longer to develop, because they didn't have the hardware to make it easier to do it.
Being able to make games as fast as possible leads to making them as good as possible. Because the faster you can make the game, the more time you can put into making it better.
Well if you think about Iran, Just isn't in bad terms with US and Europe, It wouldn't mind much if the bomb missed and fell down on some of its neighbors too.
Well who wants an enemy of the state to be a national hero? Besides I doubt Iran to start coming up with threats like if you don't behave "One of these days, Bang Zoom to the Moon!" to be their punishment.
The key advantage of TCP/IP is how it handles for Loss packets, going across an unknown network and far more failure prone hardware. However today as the internet is now running on much more reliable hardware and the path goes threw some well maintained backbone. Would you have come with TCP/IP today if you had access to modern technology/infrastructure? Or do you think you would have a different design all together?
Storage is a funny field, it is more expensive then people usually think.
When I got hired my Boss wanted me to research a storage solution, In his mind he was willing to pay $2,000 he didn't tell me that. So I did the research figured out how much we needed called vendors got the information I needed and gave my boss an estimate of $40,000. He wasn't happy with that quote and told me how much they wanted to pay. So I came up with a solution that will fit the price, but then he wasn't happy because it didn't do everything they needed. Nothing happened. A year later they hired someone who specializes in storage solutions he did the research and came up with a $50,000 estimate. I told him that they won't like it but he didn't listen to me and the boss was unhappy with the quote they raised their expectation to about $20,000. He trimmed down the solution to be about $30,000 and they weren't happy because it didn't have all the features they wanted. Nothing happend. An other year later. They finally got the storage solution they wanted because they were sick of buying servers just because they needed storage. At this point they Paid $250,000 for the solution, all the bells and whistles. Because they really needed it.
Now the company had been growing during this time so their requirements have grown. But the point is Storage Cost a lot of money, A lot more then we think it should be.
Most of them do. It is boring and doesn't make the news. We think the world is going down in a ball of flame because how horrible everything seems. But in reality news doesn't cover the good news, it is boring. They cover the exciting bad new where there is conflict and risk. The news about a law that passes with bipartisan support gets a paragraph on NPR with a senator doing a quick 10 second speech saying, this should show that we can work together on a common goal....
But news about laws that are in gridlock going down the line where it is split and both sides need to stand up to each other... Now that is news.
Why would you say that? I have seen a lot of very happy republicans, especially when they are not around democrats, democrats like to put a downer on everything, Oh how many trees died so we can have are playing cards. Oh look the public access posting has a misspelling it is because we are not funding our schools. Oh no we wont go to that because we have to give money to a huge company... Really Democrats are really a downer, even when they are not with Republicans.
Republicans only seem to get pissed off when the democrats put a downer on them doing things they want to do.
The Core value of the Modern Republican is try to keep things the way they use to be. So in essence they are happy with the way thing were. Democrats want to change everything so they are unhappy with things.
Now I am not saying we should just follow the Republicans just because they are happier with the way thing are/were because they are ignoring a lot of serious problems. But in terms of happiness Republicans are happier on the average then Democrats.
1. Capitalism is a man made invention. So it has been designed, and there is a lot of effort on keeping it working. If left untouched products that are in high demand will get stolen or violence will take over to get those products.
2. Investors do give back. They give companies who need money to grow the capital to do such with the promise they will get paid back plus some extra. You want to buy a house. You do not want to save up your money for 20 years to buy one so you go to the bank and get a loan, so you can personally get that house now and you pay the bank the money back plus extra for letting you have the money. You get the house, the bank gets more money everyone wins. The bank invested in your home. Even those big bankers. Say they bough 1000 shares in Apple from Apple. Apple gets the money that they could go into hiring 2 more people for a year. That is two more people with a Job, Apple has 2 more people on their work force. The investor gets a note that gives them partial ownership in the company which they can sell to someone else if they feel like it, which they may if the company grows further. Or if they feel the value of the company is dropping.
Well chillis are not that big, and like other peppers they are hollow on the inside. So you take 10x10 of them put them in a square and stack them 6 high. It could fit on a normal plate. These are also professional eaters so they actually exercise to stretch their stomachs to a larger size. So the volume of 600 chillis isn't impossible. But I wouldn't want to be in the restroom the next day.
Or the guy who does come up with the practical solution will get shot by the raging mob, as his solution seems to not believe in the wrath of God, so therefore he must be working for the devil and should be killed on the spot to get into Gods good graces. I would just post a message on a Tweeter Account about a 1 minute before it is due. Because no one follows me. Ill be on record, but wouldn't cause an sturr.
Simple though experiment. Take a 1 unit Diameter circle. And put it in a 1 Unit by 1 Unit square. Then lets equally divide up that perfect squares fill the larger square. Now choose one of those square where the circle partially fills up the square. And repeat the process. You notice the square which has no rounded edges will need to try to fill in a shape with a rounded edge. So you will be going on forever smaller and smaller trying to fill in most of the shape however never really filling it in because squares against a curve will have gaps.
There isn't any Magic to PI. It is just a number coming from the fact that we measure area in squares, or volume in Cubes and the fact that those shapes don't fit into the circle.
Now my though experiment isn't a good proof of Pi being an irrational number (as it doesn't prove the number can repeat) Except for the fact that as you zoom in your curve becomes closer and closer to a straight line without actually becoming straight. But it shows that the number can go on for infinite digits.
How does most IP litigation end up... Company A shares so many of their IP information with the other company for compensation, and both sides are happy again. Or company A pays Company B some money and they continue on. You are blind panicking about nothing.
I can now get my legal copy of Photoshop 4! and run it on my legal copy of windows NT 4!
What do you mean those are like baby toys! Dag Nabbit when I was your age, we had to pay thousands of dollars (I know it doesn't sound like a lot now, but back then it was a Lot of money) for this software. This software work on the newest equipment that had CPU that performed millions of calculations per second. And we can do things like adding a lens flair to a picture and it only took 10 seconds! You kids and your auto-artistic implants where everything you see is automatically shown in you head as perfectly beautiful. Let me tell you something the world is an ugly place and we had to ware garlic on our belts at it was the style of the time and I went to the candy store operated by Joe and asked for 2 candy bars for a green back... You see back in my time money was printed on paper and was green so we called them green backs....
If you look at pictures of the oldest people in the world. They look half dead already. The average life span be be increased by making sure we don't get those extra illnesses that kill us. But besides the illnesses our body ware is more then it can fix itself. We have too many moving parts.
Yes. But capitalism has a better historical track record. Why do you think there was so much tension between capitalism and communism. Their end goals are the same just a different process.
Or was that a lame argument to make capitalism sound like a neferious system.
Yes there is. Capitalism is a economic process designed to keep civilization working smoothly. It rewards people more for making goods and services that are rare (jobs that people don't want to do) but are in demand (people want it or society needs it). And to get better productivity people who choose these jobs do these jobs. Maximizing profit is a good thing, if you price too low you create overselling your product and create a shortage situation, where people who need the product cannot get it because they cannot make enough widgets or enough resorces to keep up with the services and you don't have the capital to expand. If you price too high you loose more customers and you loose money.
Greed is a personal vice where you want to take everything for yourself and not give back. Greed are the thiefs and con-men who take things without giving you the agreed services.
The problem is many of us have our priorities messed up. Where video games is our life and food clothing and shelter is just those annoying extra expenses that we need to pay for, work is gap in our living just so we get more games and entertainment. So game companies are profiting because people want the crap they produce. If it is greed the greed of the consumer is much more of a factor then the greed of the producer. It is not that greed isn't a component in capitalism however everyone's greed is canceled out.
I am not even sure why this is on slashdot. Except to fuel the Hate towards Catholics.
1. Slashdot has a vocal and near radical atheist group. It isn't enough to say I don't beleave here is why, but you need to go the extra step and go to people who do beleave in a god and call them mindless idiots because they didn't come up with the same conclusion. News like this actually makes you feel good that these religious people are just as flawed and twisted as the rest of us.
2. Educated group of people. Being an educated group of people many of you went to catholic private schools. And besides the good education they provide you get a big dose of religious dogma in which may conflict with the teachings. And teachers who can be harder on students in diciplain. And often disiplen unfairly. Giving bad feelings towards Catholics. And the sex abuse may feel close to home because you realize it could have been you.
3. Other protestesant religions. They seporated from the catholic church because of wide scale corruption. The church actually did a lot to fix the corruptions in the church. But the protestesants still want to prove that their religion is more pure.
Sex abuse doesn't know any boundaries and exist everywhere. The reason the church kept it a secret was because of their doctrine of forgiveness and a verry recent conclusion that these people who do sex crimes is actually an illness. So if the priest confessed of his sin the church gives him a clean bill of health and let's them go on. Not because of a plot but because they believe if you confess your sins god will forgive you of those sins, and the policy that the priest who does the confession will not tell anyone else, no matter what. Now you can argue this doctrine, however it isn't part of a coverup it is just following their beliefs.
Well you can continue to slack off. So the rest of us can get your job. Hard work is part of the path that leads to wealth. But there isn't one simple rule for wealth. Hard Work is part of it, and an important part.
Exactly there is actually a problem in some "First World Countries" that their population is dropping. Because their lives are not so filled with death, they feel they have the time to wait to have a child when it is the most convent or not at all, and limit their children to 1 or 2.
