Honestly guys, who the hell cares if somebody watches porn. If that's what he wants, it's what he wants. Fuck off, you.

Oh, I agree with you. I was only using a single example, punishment is just one way of getting people to listen. I personally would take it as a last resort. Your argument makes sense, and that's what I'm saying. Parents need to stop being so lazy, and just figure out what they need to do to get their kids to listen. Saying "I don't know how" isn't an excuse, though. Neither is "video games and music did it". I listened to rap since I can remember, and I turned out to be (if I do say so myself) quite a contribution to society.

This is your world as well as mine, and I'd appreciate it if you gave half a damn about it. I bet you also think it's fine to just pitch all your garbage out the side of the window as well.

  4. Re:and piracy killed music on Open Source Killing Commercial Developer Tools · · Score: 1

No, superior cost-free tools are what causes the commercial applications to stop selling. Anybody with half a brain (which is common in programmers, it's sort of a job requirement) is going to research before they settle on any one tool. Most people I know continually search for new tools, looking for that perfect one. I've settled between 3 so far, Komodo Edit, Notepad++, and Eclipse (Eclipse on linux, it sucks on windows).

They're all free, and they're all superior to any tools that cost money that I've seen so far.

  5. Re:read the interview on Games and Music, the New Book Burning · · Score: 1, Insightful

I completely agree with you 100%. I have no idea what your parent poster was talking about, or where he thinks he can draw such foolish and irresponsible deductions. It's hard raising kids, but to say that it's impossible to make them listen to you is absolutely outrageous. I feel that today it's even _easier_ to raise your kids, regardless of child abuse laws (which are also extremely overdone). Children today are so spoiled, it's cake to punish them. They have at LEAST 1000% more luxuries than you are required to give them, so do the simple thing and take all those things away until they listen. Nobody HAS to watch tv, talk on the phone, go outside (more than what is healthy), play on the computer, play video games, hang out with friends, go to the pool, go to the park, etc. etc. Continue to take things away until they listen to you, or until you've reached the bare minimum (food, water, shelter, clothing, etc.). If they STILL don't listen, then you have a genuine problem.

And don't tell me "they get obnoxious when they don't have TV, it's the easiest way for me to cope". You're a parent, nobody expects you to be 100% sane. You decided to have kids, so now you can decide to deal with your consequences.

    It's an amazing thing, responsibility.

I find it much better to hack the code before you even output it to the browser. It's much more likely to be done accurately, and it also ensures validated code. And don't mention user agent, because anybody that's changing their user agents knows the website's going to render differently.

That's not what's being debated in my post, I'm saying that as web developers, it's your job to make sure it gets to as many users as possible. We don't have a say in Microsoft's bad practices (usually), so the next best thing is to make sure that at least the users of it's browser (and many of them aren't necessarily users by choice, either that they just can't use another browser or don't know) can view our websites. If you feel that you can omit the entire Internet Explorer group, then you're a fool.

I have to agree with you there. I code my site to look good in a normal browser (like firefox), then go back in with either CSS or Server Side HTML Change hacks, to make it render properly in IE 6+. Since I've coded this way, all I'll have to do is tell everything that IE8 users will see the same page as Firefox users, meaning I won't have to do anything more than add another case in my switch/case determining which hacks should be included into the page from my PHP. I just wish more developers should realize this is how it should be done from the beginning.

Both are probably the best methods of input, as far as touchpad entry goes, but hardkeys are ALWAYS better suited for typing, especially typing in programming text, than softkeys. It's much more acurate, faster, and not only that but it doesn't require you to continue wiping your screen for (because I don't know about you, but I don't always have an opportunity to wash my hands when I need to do some quick typing.)

Or so you think. I used to work with a design team that would use Dreamweaver to design it. They'd send me the code, and not only would it make absolutely no sense (just looking at the source code) but it would be INSANE to try to implement in a real-world scenario. It once gave me 19 consecutive divs with each relying on the other's position for the output. These divs all contained things such as menu items, the content, the copyright. None of them were seperated, it was literally after . To add another item to the menu, I had to first go through and edit all the other successive divs and increment which class they implemented, then create a new class with it's own special positioning. I'll stick with Notepad++ for windows, and Eclipse (or Kate) for Linux. Eclipse has all the great code-completion features, without auto-coding it (which is bad for those of us who actually care about the output).
