The longer this goes on the more likely we are to have laws pased that are supposed to stop crackers and virus writers. And with these laws in place, when a new virus comes out or a system is comprimized the public will say "How could these evil people be breaking the law like this... why cant the government stop them?"

When the public has this outlook, it will be even easier to get more such laws passed (you want to stop these people right... well then give us more power).

Its a self propogating problem... and the longer it goes on the less likely anyone will be to question the quality of the software being comprimized. The blame will be placed on the criminal or on the law enforcement agents unable to catch the criminal... and microsoft can continue to produce software with integrated virus hooks.

We cant expect end users to wake up and start holding microsoft (or any other company) accountable overnight. Its up to people like us... programmers, who need to make software that is secure... and more improtantly, MIS people who must demand more from their software...

Its about time someone got fired for choosing microsoft when the solution simply didnt fit the problem... the whole "its from vendorX just like everything else we run... it must be the most suitable solution for us" mind set has to be abolished.

sure, its not even, but its not as bad as you make it out to be...

as far as software support is concerned, they already support the iMac so they have to support all 8.* systems... well, make that a requirement that will cut out all the 68030's like the LC few people would complain. hell you could restrict more than that (pci powermacs would be a good example) and few people would complain. you certainly wouldnt have this PR nightmare on your hands.

As for hardware support... yea, like there arent too many kinds of hardware on the wintel side. humm maby they should say that they will only support brand name machines. that would save them lots of money but not reduce their target market by that much (since most consumers buy brand name)

please, consider these things before you post... there are plenty of companies offering highspeed access to the mac (mediaone for instance) and making the business model work. Bell Atlantic could do the same.

  16. P3 won't be slower that a G4 on Intel Issues Gag Order on Pentium III Speed · · Score: 1

dud you are making some pretty hardcore assumptions here.

first off the reason thoes demos "scream" is that they take advantage of a new set of instructions. These instructions are designed for multimedia work and do infact accelerate certain tasks when software is written to take advantage of them.

Similarly in the G4 there is a new peice of technology (altivec) which does very similar things, also requireing software to take advantage of it.

The difference is that altivec is capable (theoreticaly anyway) of a FAR greater increase in processing power than KNI (the instructions in the PIII). I think you are being a little bit premature with your assumptions about the G4.

Also, by this time next year, we should be seeing "multi-core" G4's with efectively 2 or 4 chips on a single processor, allowing for some serious speed. meanwhile you can expect the pentium arhitecture to begin topping out in its ability to increase in speed... youll notice that the frequency at which intell releases faster chips has decreased over the past few years... you wont see another substancial revoluton from intel untill IA-64 becomes available.

in addition I would encourage you to look at these chips from a price performace perspective. despite a smaller overall market and therefore smaller volumes of chips the G3 is substancialy cheaper than the pentium II despite its exceptional performace.
