A while back there was some guy that wanted to mandate seat belts on motorcycles. This isn't a good idea since, in a crash bikes go every which way and you don't want to end up crushed under it. The belt that connects you to your safety gear is your helmet strap.

If this thing went off its wheels I cant imagine it would provide all that much protection to the rider who is strapped into it. If nothing else your limbs are free to be torn off.

Anyone else could come along and build an advertising network fairly easily. Its still hard to get a bunch of advertisers and web sites to advertise on, but its hard to do that now (classic chicken/egg problem).

what they should really be doing is patching it out of games after a set amount of time. A year or 2 after Madded 2005 comes out, is it really worth their time and money running an authentication server when they are making all their money on Madden 2007?

At least that would be a somewhat reasonable way to approach this... DRM that is only in effect when the game is new. Companies don't make much money off of old games.

Its still crappy since it stops you from playing your favorite single player game on the plane or when your network is down, but at least it would take away the fear that your games are going to become worthless when they are no longer worth supporting.

Of course this model wouldn't work for movies and music which continue to make money for a while after they come out.

iTunes is not the only source for music online. If you want MP3s of just about anything on iTunes you can go get it someplace else. That MP3 will play on any MP3 player.

Apple does not have a monopoly on MP3 sales or on MP3 player sales, so yes, it is okay.

Im not really sure that I see Google-yahoo as being a major monopoly issue. Nothing about that merger puts a barrier to entry on the search engine market. If you want to develop a better search method and put it on line you can do that without any problem. If its way better you might even unseat google for search.

It would require google cutting deals with browser makers and PC manufactures to be the one and only search engine for that browser/PC that you would start having trouble. Or if they set up deals with web sites that they would only appear in google searches if they somehow shunned other search engines.

Just being the biggest player in town doesn't necessarily make you an illegal monopoly. It doesn't even make you a monopoly if its trivial for someone to set up shop to compete with you. Its not like google.

It really doesn't sound like a fork was necessary. The devs might be being dicks but a plugin architecture is there to allow third parties to mold an application the way they want it to be molded and it keeps responsibility for making sure the plugin is compatible squarely on the shoulders of those who what the functionality.

Now Escape is a good key for this particular application, and I agree that it was a bad idea to remove it from the application, but I just don't get the hate for Ctrl-W.

Its important to remember though that with many options you increase the amount of testing an application requires. That might not be the case for this text entry box, but having an option of MDI or not is pretty significant. It would be easy for a developer to put in a feature that breaks the option he doesnt use and it becomes necessary for QA to do a full regression in both modes.

People love options, but they arent always whats best for a product. If you can come up with one option that makes 90% of users happy thats probably better than having a preference that doubles the amount of testing you have to do.

This case, however, seems like a good candidate for an option.

Mostly, I agree with your post but one thing stands out for me. If a major bug makes it to production, I don't put that on the dev team. That is a failure of the QA department. Sure, its up to the dev team to fix it, but I don't think enough responsibility is put on QA and their ability to test the software. Admittedly most QA departments are understaffed and underfunded, but it is clearly their responsibility to find critical bugs in a release before it goes live.

And the comic within a comic bit is also a standard device... fairly rare in comics actually, but I have definitely seen it in literature before.

Where you are right about familiarity mattering is probably the whole superhero plot line. If you have no concept of the comic book super hero then its hard to understand the "realistic" charachters in Watchmen. But then again, how many people dont know about superman and batman. I wasn't a huge comic fan when I read the Watchmen and I didn't have trouble with it. It was because of Watchmen, The Dark Knight and Arkum Asylum that I got into comics in the first place.
