Is format shifting really modification of content? I mean my tv signal comes in in NTSC and my DVR trans codes it to mepg. Has it really changed the content?
I don't care what Nicolas Negroponte says... the medium is not the message. The content is the content and you tube isnt really materially changing it.
I didn't have any trouble with the iPod camera device. Then again I was in europe and charging both was quite easy. Your device sounds pretty sweet but this was a cheep investment (for someone who already has an ipod) and I liked having the music and movies available on the ipod during my trip. I get your preference for local music but I ended up with a lot of down time on the trains and planes so I was pretty happy to have some portable music. Different kinds of travel would make that less useful.
From what I hear, apple may be looking at the sub notebook market in the near future. There are rumors of a professional laptop with a 12" wide screen... possibly lacking an optical drive for weight and size concerns. I'm pretty curious about it but I don't think I would buy one. I don't travel enough to make it worth while and I would much rather have a 15" mac book pro for day to day use. One day, when I am obscenely wealthy, I will have both.
In japan, you probably didn't have to worry about it being stolen. seriously.
I left a set of nice prints in a phonebooth outside a train station on my way into a town. My wife and I spent a week in this town and didn't notice they were missing until we went to pack at the end of the week. We returned to the train station and after some difficulty with communication we found out that the prints were found by someone and brought to a lost and found. The biggest issue was going to the prefectural capitol to pick them up (the lost and founds are consolidated weekly) but otherwise we got them back without a problem. When we returned to the states we gave them to a friend as a wedding present, with a good story too boot.
built for the ipod that lets you offload pictures from your digital camera. I suggest you pick one of these up. Also if you have a video ipod loading up a bunch of movies is a great way to kill time on planes and trains.
I recently got back from a 3 week trip to europe, it would have been nice to have a laptop but certainly not worth the trouble. I have an old Titanium powerbook, around the same size and weight as the laptop you are thinking about bringing. I suppose if I was going for that much longer I might have brought it. I would suggest looking into a smaller information device instead if you really feel you want something. Some kind of subnotebook. lugging a large notebook around would be a pain and hiding it away is more difficult.
I was considering purchasing a Nintendo DS and a copy of opera for the DS but since it is not available in the US it would have taken too long for me to hunt down a copy (I could have bought one in Europe I guess).. that actually would have been great for connecting to the wireless networks that seemed to be everywhere in europe but the lack of a real keyboard might have driven me nuts.
I find my mac takes a bit longer than that to get its wireless connection back... its kind of frustrating. Certainly not as long as what you describe for you windows machine (I dont have a windows laptop to compare it too). But I always feel like I am sitting around waiting for it to get its wireless connections back.
While I agree that this is less mac like behavior I prefer it. I like to think of tabs as windows. I guess if you use individual windows to group together similar tabs and that is part of your web browsing habits that might be different.
I often found myself closing tabs I didn't want to close in safari. It doesn't happen as often in firefox.
I guess what set me off there was your description "strapping on a rubber penis and moving toward some hapless individual tied, bent-over, to a table" coupled with your later declaration of "Confusing violence and affection == BAD"
I found the first description to be very much BDSM based which is what put me on that road. I will agree that true violence is never affection and that confusing the two can be very bad, but in the context you had set above it sounded like any kind of violent act is bad if the recipient believes it is a form of affection. Swinging a flogger at someone is a violent act but in BDSM it could be considered a very affectionate act. I agree with you that there are more and less dangerous aspects to BDSM and some people do play with some dangerous things, but optimally even cutting or blood play (which freaks the hell out of me) would be done with care and not with malice.
I apologize if I misinterpreted your post.
Still, my question stands. You say consensual BDSM is OK (which I agree with) but is it ok to take pictures of it? to show those pictures to others? what about posting them on the internet?
Ill agree that there is a line there somewhere. You shouldn't be taking such pictures to a school and hanging them up for the children to look at perhaps... but it not as clear where the line should be... or at least, where you think it should be.
So consensual BDSM is bad, no matter what? or is that only if you take pictures of it? Or is that only if you distribute those pictures?
Seems a touch judgmental to me. Thats not to say that people should be handing out such pictures to children, but you are a little black and white with this one.
Those early treatments can end up leaving a young (early 20s girl) sterile.
That alone is good reason to look long and hard at this vaccine. Maybe mandatory isn't the way you want to go, but perhaps some kind of government funding for kids whos parents want them vaccinated would be a good plan
Not strictly true. This protects against the 4 strains of HPV responsible for most of the cancer and genital wart cases. If you got a different strain from those 4 this would still protect you against those 4 strains. Even if you got one of the 4 the vaccine still protects you against the other 3. So while its effectiveness is reduced and you do want to get vaccinated before exposure, its still good to get vaccinated even after being exposed.
Either way it almost certainly requires penetrative sex to spread.
While the rates of transmission is are not well known HPV can be spread orally and perhaps even through touching if one were to say, touch yourself (genitally) and then touch your partner. It is thought that condoms might prevent (reduce) the spread of cervical HPV infections because it prevents internal skin to skin contact but the jury is still out. Plus an infection else where on the genitals could be spread by later contact.
Education mostly. Most people aren't aware of the HPV->cancer link. Most people don't even know what HPV is (though most have heard of genital warts but wouldn't think they could get that... after all they don't have sex with someone with a big old wart).
All of the women that I know (well enough to talk about such things) who have open active sex lives are trying to get this vaccine right now. Some of them are over 27 and have to pay for it out of pocket because insurance wont cover it.
The problem is, young kids don't know about this and their parents are uneducated about it. Even if their parents knew you still have to worry about the whole "my kid doesn't do that" thing. That said, maybe education and PR might be a better way for Merck to spend its money.
It just hasn't been tested or approved for men yet. There are studies for gay men that I have heard of but none yet for straight men (corrections please, I would be interested in hearing about hetero male studies)
Why would you say that liberals think a rubber can stop it? I have never heard any retoric from anybody, never mind a liberal, that implies that HPV can be stopped by a condom. It is a skin contact disease and its is well known that a condom does not stop it (though it may reduce the likely hood of transmission a bit)
I have mostly been hearing right wing religious arguments against this vaccine, the old "it will make kids have sex" routine... like they aren't having sex now and HPV (which they have never heard of) is actually stopping them.
The vaccine hasnt been tested extensively on men yet. It is thought that it would be effective but it is not yet avaiable, testing is underway however.
There is some evidence that HPV might cause cancer in men but penile and anal cancers (at least the ones thought to be caused by HPV) are far more rare.
Still, knowing that you are less likely to be carrying around a strain like the 4 protected against would always be a good thing, plus 2 of the strains prevented are the primary source of genital warts (not cancerous) so that is a good thing too.
For the most part, in America, towns only have one school... some have less than one (a large geographic area might have a single high school for a bunch of towns if the population density is low enough). Even in larger towns, where you live determines which school you go to. There are ways to switch schools and different states/districts have different rules, but generally speaking you at least have to jump through hoops to send your kids to a different high school unless you go with private schooling.
To be fair, it does sound like the copyright board of Canada is being pressured by the (mostly American) recording companies to levy this iPod tax.
Still... I don't think its fair to equate the recording industry with the US government or the US people. I know I don't support a $75 iPod tax. It does absolutely nothing for me.
this is true, but he still wants to own the customer experience end to end. if a customer gets his player and his music from apple, his next player will likely come from apple... if it has been years since the person dealt with apple they might be more tempted to switch.
Doesn't XP and Vista make it more difficult for you to upgrade your computer by making you re-register the software just for changing some components. I mean the OS is what they have control of and they are actually using it to make it more difficult to upgrade the hardware. I can drop a new video card into my mac and I wont have to deal with any licensing crap at least.

Giving a blow job while driving?
Damn man... thats pretty hard core... at the very least the passenger should have hold of the wheel

Any suggestions?
The whole thing is free.
With purchase of $700 playstation 3.
I guess this is a good thing but its certainly not enough to get me to buy a playstation at that price
What makes you think a can of coffee isnt hot?
The Japanese have been doing this shit forever.

Still, not very mac like I will freely admit.

uh... yea... and didn't he drop out to start MS?
Just sayin.
obviously he knows basic economic theory... that is why he wants what is best for his company.

Protected or not HPV is still a risk. Condoms do not protect against it.
good on you for getting your daughter vaccinated though.
