Ok, normally I would agree with you, but in the case of MS I don't think hate is too strong a word, or at least in the context of their business practices. Any corporation that actively attempts to stifle/destroy new innovations that they don't control by use of illegal/monopolistic methods deserves nothing but contempt. They stopped being "just a software company" a long time ago.
Im afraid with Google, we may be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. I hate MS as much as the next guy (Linux user for quite a while now), but would Google really be any better as the 800 lb gorilla on the block? Oh, well, chalk it up to paranoia, but I really would hate to see one evil overlord replaced by another.
(...but otherwise it offers nothing the average desktop user is interested in... )
I beg to differ on that point, the average desktop user tends to use their computer for web surfing and checking their email, etc., all of which GNU/Linux can do quite well. As far as power users go, I would consider myself one, and I use GNU/Linux exclusively.
(...In the end what keeps your dream and product alive is monetary success. Idealism will not do it. Linux MUST become profitable soon...)
GNU/Linux isn't about money, if that were the case why would you be able to get it for free? And if profits are your only concern, just ask the Red Hat guys about that. Also, its damn near impossible for it to die. The source code is out there, and I guarantee even if the big corporate guys fold, the remainder of the community will continue to maintain it, just as we did before IBM, etc. stepped in in the first place. Welcome the beauty that is free software.
(..If people run Linux once they get their 3 programs installed that they actually use they probably won't be calling tech support.. for... I dunno.. ever...)
Ok, that's just plain silly. There are literally millions of apps available for GNU/Linux, and unlike MS products where you have to install them piecemeal (and heaven help you if you ever want to uninstall one cleanly), most distros maintain a repository of the more popular ones, and it takes only one or two mouse clicks or commands, to update all of them.
You know, I should've just modded this funny...but it doesn't deserve the +1.
I must admit, i was wrong about the Novell/M$ deal. It looks like the Suse guys have turned the tables on the embrace/extend attempt by M$. Now with Redmond's claims that they have no intention to sue (which is doubtfull if they even could...sorry Bill, you're a Linux distributor now:) ), and with Novell saying that they are going to reveal the innards of the deal, Im thinking that this was a great strategy to ensure the future of Linux. M$ just underestimated the viral nature of the GPL. How do you like the taste of your own medicine, Mr. Ballmer?
I don't think they're actually "cylon" cylons. Remember, the cylons have this big stigma about the "Final 5." Maybe some kind of schism within the early cylons?
All I have to say is ask any linux user (ubuntu or otherwise) if they are considering switching to windows and see what they say. Then ask some windows useres if they are considering swapping to linux. I think the results will speak for themselves.
Muzzling the press, protraying the US as an enemy, if Russia didn't have such a massive amount of nuclear weapons at its disposal, I would say its almost funny how people slip into old patterns so easily.
And you all thought the Dems were the party of personal freedom...
I guess it makes sense, the RIAA and the Democrats have one thing in common, "give us more money so we can spend it for you."
Vote Libertarian./soapbox
Testing a new product extensively, not releasing it until its ready...
Sounds like MS should take a page out of Apple's book, at least what they haven't swiped already.

I've built my own custom machine several times, and done massive upgrades, and let me say, ive completely given up on windows. Im tired of trying to convince customer service types that when i change out the mobo or cpu on my machine that i'm not a software pirate. And apparently vista is even worse for this. Sorry, I'll stick with nix for the forseeable future.
What do these idiots think they're doing? Its not the place/job/right of a PRIVATE ORGANIZATION to go around playing Miami Vice on people. They seem to think they are a private police force or some such thing. I didn't think much of these folks before this, and this just confirms my suspicions. The RIAA/MPAA apparently have lost all touch with reality. They really are acting like the MAFIAA.
I think i've heard of this somewhere before...
Hmmm...download free stuff for just the price of seeing a few ads. Its brilliant!! Hey we could call it Adware...
Oh, wait...Never mind.
My Widows box actually takes quite a bit longer to completely load than my Linux one. If you factor in the time it actually takes for the OS to finish loading, the boot times come down in favor of Linux.
p.s. I run Ubuntu 6.10 and Windows XP on a 2.3 ghz AMD64 w/ 1 GB of RAM and a 1.8 dual core intel laptop w/ 2 GB RAM respectively.
p.p.s. Yes i know this isn't a scientific comparison by any stretch of the imagination, im just saying that this is what happens for me.
If Dell does start offering preinstalled linux (big IF) I would guess they would go with one of the more "user-friendly" distros ie Ubu or SuSE. Anyone who would use something else probably knows enough to install it themselves. Or maybe they could bundle a CD/DVD of your distro of choice? Its just sad that a company has to be on the verge of bankruptcy to start looking at alternatives to lock-in software, or the revolutionary concept of actually LISTENING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!! What a thought!
At least not until Haiku is viable :)
"But at least they're boxing each other and not the little guys."
And there we have the upside to all of this.

Actually, the A3 went back to full auto. The A4 then went back to the 3-round. Offtopic, I know, but interesting nonetheless.
I was thinking more along the lines of iProbe...

Translating this into M$peak:
competition=M$ and its puppet corporations
hurt=deprive M$ of its own monopolistic efforts
Seriously, pot and kettle anyone?
