I'm proud to be an American today. So proud. I admit, us non-US slashdotters do tend to take the piss out of you Americans a fair bit (partly because it's quite fun and very easy), but deep down I care and I'm very sad to see America go so wrong these last couple of decades.
The knock-on effect on the rest of the first world cannot be denied. When the U.S. comes up with a ding-bat solution to IP like this, then we are all doomed together because it will filter down through international treaties and trade agreements.
Freeing up IP is essential for making health, education and the energy market cheaper and more universal. In the last 5 to 10 years, first world governments have been 'pulling up the ladder' in this regard rather than opening up to the people. It's almost as though they are anticipating something.
First off it's a concept vehicle. The point is to try new things, good or bad, to see how it works. That doesn't mean we can't take the piss out of it on slashdot, does it?
Just having watched the vid, it's quite a cool concept. Though I can well imagine a jealous walker-by accidentally slashing it with his pocket knife. That would ruin it a bit methinks.
What kind of odds are they giving in Vegas? I don't know, but I bet hardly anyone can be bothered to RTFA. The summary doesn't leave much to discuss I have to say.
He might as well have been reading a story about eating shit in a public library or having butt sex with his wife. You mean that wasn't mentioned among the things the President did?
And of course, it's actually just Intel-based Macs. So my two-year-old G5 is completely overlooked yet again. I hear ya. I got a macbook last year and only started to follow the mac forums then. The sting in Apple's tail is noticeable and, though they offer a better product overall than Microsoft, they make an even worse mother-in-law than M$.
They just call them "crossovers" now. Seriously, it's all marketing. Really? That's queer, where I live we still call them cars with big trannies (for short).

Also interesting to see whether the trend of people sensing safety while in those large vehicles will continue...
Or whether it will be replaced by a sense of embarrassment.
I used to curse the Soccer-moms driving around in their BMW X5's to pick up a single toddler from kindergarten and drive 800 meters to their house. But now, I smile, knowing what a stupid waste of money it really was.
you know you're enormously in the minority, right? I mean, I'm in there with you, as are a lot of/. readers, but compared to the general public, we're really a very small minority. desktop email/web/photos/mp3s/minor document editing - that's *it* for most people. And who's to say that's wrong?
Exactly right. With any product, from a vegetable peeler to a house, there are going to be hacks out there who want one with the lot, but everyone else wants something they can afford and that doesn't get in the way of what they see to be of value/what they want to get done. If Linux can provide a simple, cheap, functional interface that allows people to do basic stuff, then it has the right formula. It's definitely on the way there. Actually, I reckon it's there already.
The fancy-apps that the grandparent referred to will migrate to the system that has users on it. But those apps are not in the majority and are less important than the basics.
There seems to be some confusion about what tensile strength is. Tensile strength is how well a material can resist pulling, not bending or compression. Exactly, for example, ordinary toilet paper has poor tensile strength, resulting in many a brown finger for some. Let's hope this will stop with our new, stronger-than-steel paper. On the downside we may expect a few more red fingers.

Jeff: We'll be attacked any minute by a muslim man-eating creeper and..
Jill: What about we are all going to starve because.. uhh..
Tony: We're gonna be taken over by weeds..
