Our current education system is failing. Its very evident by looking at any national ranking charts that compare countries. We need to do something before things crash. And believe me, when it crashes it will affect YOU. Crime, the economy, poverty, health care. What wouldn't be fair would be you reaping the benefits of education without paying for it. Public education (yes, even the crappy system we have now) helps EVERYONE, those without children, those with children in private school, the elderly who's children have already finished school, EVERYONE.
I'm asking specifically for the example given in this story. i know the hardware is different and that the iPad sucks in comparison. But how can the iPad not go to google via it's built in web browser and read the same news stories that a computer can? I don't see how the iPad fixes the problem that good old Rupert thinks exists in google.
Since most computing power is needed during the business day, during the same time that they need their processing power... it would seem they have little value in what they have to offer.
unless you are on the other side of the planet, then your peek time is their down time.
You are kidding right? This season's Doctor really seems to be getting back to the feeling "original" Doctor Who episodes. No more over-the-top corniness that really killed the 2005 series episodes for me. He's goofy in the way Tom Baker was, but the story it's self was very serious. I really hope they keep this style going.
My first thought was that it could be the shadow of that large crater keeping the area cooler. But I don't really know the scale of whats involved there, nor did I read the article:)
I actually favor roundabouts when done properly. There are a few things that Europe has that we should adopt after all. Another is the metric system, and both roundabouts and the metric system share a common problem here in America. Namely, most people don't know how to use them, and resist learning.
They do take up more space than convention intersections. In order to install them at established intersections someone is going to have to lose their land. The small town I live in is replacing it's main intersection with a roundabout, and each business on the corners is either being torn down to make room, or losing a significant amount of parking.
hmm.. slashdot ate some of the comment text there... guess i should have read the preview more closely.
Should read: Phone rings: caller ID says Joe (your last name). Pick up phone: "Hello Mr (your last name), I'm from X Company, and we want you to have one of our fine credit cards." Call and report X Company.

When talking about things at the galaxy scale, what is considered dust? Is this actual real "dust" of the size that collects on my shelves, grains of sand sized bits, gravel, or something larger?
I used that argument intentionally because that is what the other side is going to argue. Which would explain the "devil's advocate" part of my original comment.
No one would care if I was giving out free water bottles on a hot day, nor would anyone care if I was giving away books for free, but when I'm giving away something in essence unlimited* it becomes bad?
I 100% agree with you, but I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here.
Once you start handing out child pornography it's bad.
Thats a pretty good idea. perhaps we could pay them to better educate themselves. Someone should probably do a study on that.
Yes.
That's part of what society is. They work twords the betterment of the members.

So the children of rich parents should do better in school than those of poor parents? Purely because they have more money?
I'm not advocating one way or another, but it's the first question that popped in to my mind when I read your post.

I don't get it, the iPad has a web browser doesn't it? How is the iPad different from a computer in this example?

you only ever see speedbumps in upscale residential areas.
That's because the lower class streets have inverse speedbumps, AKA, potholes.
That's where phone company records come in.

It's been done.
The OP is the one that made the comparison, not me.
And as someone else pointed out, the iPad isn't shipping yet either.
It may be "me too", but it's "me too" done better than Apple did.
I'll name 3 that currently have updates pending in Windows Update on a new laptop I'm setting up right now.
Nvidia, Dell, and Brother.
Evolution has no direction. It is just change to better suit an environment.

well holy crap. I had never heard that before. that's kinda awesome.
I tend to agree with you, but it brings up the question of why the effects of time are different on an observer in motion compared to one at rest.
