I know this doesn't work for a lot of people, and it's a little cleche, but here goes... I walk down a street and give a total stranger a dollar. Of course this makes him happy. I now feel happy for making someone else happy. now that makes 2 people happier, 1 richer, and one poorer. thermodynamics doesn't really work well for emotions.
more platters = more moving parts, and thats exactly what they were trying to eliminate. By adding more platters you also need more drive heads, more sensitive electronics and moters, and more fragile stuff in general.
Once the proticals and software is fully understood and "hacked" there will be no reason to call it crippleware. We will be able to do almost anything with the data, including sending the "protected" data back to the computer.
The thing is that they sat back and let thier technology grow and grow without trying to enforce thier patents. After it's use got to be too big for most people to change they decided it was time to start the lawsuits. I don't think people would be quite as upset with them if they had started asking for thier money right away.
In fact, I think action figures would be especially vulnerable because a great deal of their cost is from movie industry royalty markup.
That is if you are willing to paint them yourself (this could actually be fun), and any moving parts wouldn't work, many action figures have movable arms, legs, and heads.
In the web server setup of IIS I can tell it to redirect browsers to a custom error page depending on the error. If I want that 404 error to show up al nice and pretty and look like the rest of my site then I can do this. And error is never sen by the browser because the webserver is redirecting it to a page that actually exists. I'm assuming it works the same way for the default error pages too, because I can see the HTML code for them and edit it if I want.
Ohh yeah, it's entirly possible that I'm getting this wrong, because I learned all this just by messing around with the servers and I'm kinda new at it. So if you still say Im wrong could you please explain why? I'm always willing to change my mind if the proof is good enough.
Well.. that 404 error that you see.. that's actually a web page! So to your browser it is finding the page, it's just that the error page is being generated by the web server before your browser can see that there is nothing there.
You have to remember that not everyone has a broadband connection. Before I had DSL I would buy boxed versions of the software, or sometime order from cheapbytes if i just wanted a slightly updated version. But now that I have DSL it's easy to just download the ISO. The boxed versions are for people new to linux, or don't have the bandwidth to grag a new version every few months.
The protical used by quake, and the network proticals are two very different things. It's like comparing IP/SPX to Telnet, They operate at different levels and are totally different types of proticals. The protical used inside quake really makes no difference, it end up being wrapped inside the IPv6 protical, and it's the ipv6 or tcp/ip, or ipx, or netBui type proticals that I was refering to.

Over a network it is effectively impossible to improve QuakeIII performance without also breaking the laws of physics. Bandwidth may make a difference, but protocols won't.
Some proticals are more efficiant then others, some can be routed differently, or not at all. You can't say that a protical doesn't make a difference when it clearly does. If you are using an inneficiant protical to play a game then you are wasting many bytes in each packet, that can cause lag. A good protical will let you get the data/packet size ratio very high, and allow the packet to be routed much quicker. a protical can make a huge difference in performance depending on how it's designed.
Why exactly would anyone hook up a slot machine to the internet? There is no reason for it. They have always worked fine as stand alone units that can only be opperated by the person in front of it. What about plyaing remotely? no way, it would much much easier, and cheeper for them to just slap up a few server like the ones used for internet casinos now. The only possible reason for networking a slot machine now that i can think of would be for the casino's LAN, they could tell when someone won, or when the machine was geting low on money. But i can see no reason to have it on the INTERnet.
Cookies don't have to be used for traking, they are mainly used to keep "state" across pages. At least that's what I use them for in my ASP pages. The cookies is only used to hold a small marker that expires almost instantly. No tracking involved what-so-ever. So cookies don't = tracking as you say. that's just one of thier uses.
wow, you have really got to be a dedicated gek to take your laptop with you when you are taking a leek. Kinda brings to mind an image of someone at a urinal trying to prop thier laptop up with one hand while aiming with the other.

I don't think the move from Moterola to x86 would be too easy. There are tons of MacOS programs out there that would have to be recompiled and/or redesigned to work on the new archetecture. There are many freeware and shareware programs that have a huge userbase on the Mac right now. Not every hobbyest is going to be able to make thier code work on both Mac and PC. Now I'm sure your going to tell me that open sourcing the programs would help, and it would, but I don't foresee that happeneing to high degree in the Mac world.
I had to think about it for a little while before I came up with a way that it could work. Instead of each arm creating exact copies of it's self, it creates a smaller version of it's self. Each recuresions ends up with a smaller arm then before, until eventually you end up with a tryly nano arm, or something like that. Ohh well, its early and I havnt had any coke yet, so it minght not work that way... sigh....
Umm... yeah, and thier OS, and their office applications, and the curent legal situation, and many many many many many more things. Sony does entertainment, and they do it well.
I was in first grade when It happened. The teachers herded us into the library to watch the launch. Everyone's eyes were glued to teh tv and then when it hapened there was jsut silence. Even at that age all the kids knew that this was bad. I can remember the look on my teachers face as she stared silently mouthing the words "ohh my God". Then some of the kids started to cry. This was something that affected me for years, still does. That sping my class planted a tree in front of the school with the names of the crew on a plaque. I can still feel my gut wrenching evertime I see that tree.
Nope, not what it says. It's saying that they may NOT make any AIHS services until AFTER they have become compatible. I read it 4 times to be sure I was reading it right, and I also got a co-worker to read it too, they agreed with me.

Another question, what's with all the cussing? I know it's your right to do thats well.. but whats the point? ohh well, have a nice night.

Ahh! so the error is sent as part of the headers even it it's an html pahe that's shown? It's all becoming clear now, thanks.

But at the time this was made it *was* complicated. the IC chips were so new and cost over $1000 per chip acording to the article.

It can't be too hard to wire another battery to it, just solder 2 points together and bypass the dead batter.
