Basic freedoms like the right to starve to death if you don't have enough money to buy food? Go off and die if you don't have enough money to treat a serious medical condition? Thank you, but I think I'll give up those "freedoms" in favor of the freedom not to have to worry about having enough money to survive if something unexpected happens. What never ceases to amaze me is how little people like you value human life.
I think what's amusing (or sad really) is that you're so incredibly brainwashed by this American "individualism" that you cannot even imagine a society where people actually care enough about the world around them that they're willing to give up some of their money in order to help others not so fortunate as to actually have enough to survive. It's really a sad reflection on todays American society and I can only say that I'm glad I don't live in your world.
Oh and I missed the part about charity. Charit is all well and good, but if you think it can replace the government as a means to care for the poor, you're dreaming.
What happens when, like now for instance, the economy goes in the shitter and people decide that they'd rather not pay for charity?
I'm a CS masters student (that education is entirely free btw, and I, along with most here, are proud of it), so I don't earn much right now, but probably will in the future. (and if you take a look at my nickname you can probably figure out where I am)
I do not feel "guilty" for having a better life than many others, but I do feel everyone should have the same opportunities in life, and if that makes me a Communist, then so be it, label me what you will, I admire the ideals of Communism. Me, I label myself simply Socialist to split hairs.
Don't assume that everyone who has money feels like you do, it's quite common, even for many of those well off, to feel that everyone deserves a shot in life, and that having a lot of money really doesn't matter as much as the public good does.
1. And I assume you will just accept it and go off and die if something like that happened to you?
2. I guess we're just of different persuasions, but I tend to believe in helping people become all they can, regardless of how much their current economic status. And i believe in helping people survive regardless of economic status. I'm willing to pay for this.
4. Again, I guess we just see things differently. I actually have that human emotion called compassion.. But I suppose you prefer it if anyone who can't pay for themselves just go off somewhere out of sight, out of mind and die?
I don't mind at all if I get slightly less money each month if people less fortunate than me can enjoy life as much as me. In fact, I wouldn't mind if those who did nothing had as much money as I do, I could care less about money as long as I have enough to live a comfortable life (which for me does not include a giant house with 10 SUV's, a giant pool and 100 km to work).
And if there's anything I really hate it's people who have so much money they could live in obscene luxury for the rest of their lives and then some, but still feel the need to gather more and more, no matter the cost to others. They're despicable.
I guess you can do without public roads, you'll just build your own? If you get permanently disabled somehow and can no longer work for a living, I assume you'll have enough savings to last a lifetime? You can also pay for your kids school? Health care? I assume you'll extinguish any fires, or at least have several thousand at hand when it happens to pay off the local firefighting company? And you'll catch criminals on your own, or maybe you'll pay the private cops thousands to catch that criminal that stole a computer worth $500? Oh and can I assume that don't care one bit what happens to those who cannot pay for all this on their own (ie. at least 50% of the population)?
People tend to exaggerate just how sparsely populated the US is. While it's true that the US as a whole is much less densely populated than Europe as a whole, it's not like the US population is spread evenly across the country, just like it's not in Europe. The state of Ohio is about as densely populated as France. How much rail service does Ohio have? Little to none. France? One of the largest high speed rail networks with speeds up to 320 kph, and at least hourly service between major cities. And Ohio only comes in at no. 9 in terms of population density...
Just the fact that the government wants 100% is enough. They may not force ISP's yet, but when they find out that those 5% won't do it (I assume out of principle, there are a few of those ISP's left) they will probably turn to forcing them to comply.
We have our own filter here in Sweden, also supposedly for "child porn" (it's been proven to block other things too, and the filter is just as non-transparent). It doesn't have quite the same coverage (yet) but judging by our current government's previous actions, I wouldn't be surprised by them forcing ISP's to comply within a few years.
But maybe you know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone who has the files you want? (assuming an average of 10 peers each, that would be anyone of 10,000 people)
Unless they configure the router to send the logs to online storage, where they can be mined for data (under the pretenses of finding "illegal" content) which they can sell to the highest bidder.
You don't carry your phone with you in your car? Even the relatively low bandwidth UMTS can handle an audio stream, not to mention HSDPA (which is pretty ubiquitous around here at least) or the coming fourth generation network.
That's how I get my broadband (100/100), the city owns the fiber and private ISP's offer internet service over the fiber, I have a choice between 7 ISP's, 2 phone service providers and 3 cable TV companies, all operating over the fiber.
So apparently, it worked better under wine, with better graphics to boot. Why didn't they just publish an install script which downloaded, installed and configured the version of wine that worked best, and install the game using that copy of wine?
Corel Linux was my first foray into the world of Linux, back in 1999. I remember having to switch to another graphics card just to get the graphical installation to work. I didn't seriously start using Linux until later in 2000, this time with Slackware. Alot of work, but no switch between graphics cards (it didn't have a graphical insallation and I was able to fix the graphics problem from the terminal once it was installed.
All publicity is good publicity.;) Anyways I would say most posts have actually been generally favorable towards Windows 7.
Yes, the point *releases*, sometimes rc and in a few cases beta, and then usually one article per release, sometimes an article highlighting some particularly high profile feature in the latest release. Never the onslaught of articles like with Windows 7.
The reason it's tagged astroturfing is because of the recent onslaught of Windows 7 articles about every little thing, from multiple articles about how many versions it will have to individual articles about every little feature improvement. Not a day has gone by without a new Windows 7 article recently, and we're still months away from release, they're still a few months off from RC.
If any other operating system release got this kind of publicity, that's all slashdot would be filled with, news about tiny improvements in that operating system and speculation as to how many different versions that other operating system will be released in.
There's certainly nothing wrong with positive news about Windows 7, but when every single piece of news gets it's own article, and with the amount of dupes this is getting, it's getting a bit annoying.
I completely agree. This ad campaign is getting seriously annoying. Not a day goes by without a story about Windows 7, an operating systems months from even RC, and which from what I understand, is essentially to Windows Vista what Windows 98 was to Windows 95.
Do we really need 5 articles speculating about how many versions Windows 7 will be released in? Do we really need separate articles about every little supposed improvement over Vista?
I haven't tried using it on a Mac (I don't have one), but Okular is written in Qt, which supposedly has some pretty nice Mac integration. It's worth checking out.
Personally, I want to know what happened to the CFC scare. Supposedly our air conditioners were going to rip a hole in the Ozone layer and cook us all to death.
Well, it did cause holes in the ozone layer. Thankfully, we managed to phase CFC out before the doomsday scenario occurred. So the "CFC scare" was very effective at stopping the ozone depletion.
If you want to vote for a balanced budget, exactly who do you vote for? Tax and spend democrats or borrow and spend republicans?
Obviously, if you want a balanced budget, you have to vote for those willing to raise taxes along with increased spending. Though as an outsider looking in, it appears to me that both parties wants to borrow and spend, neither party really seems willing to raise taxes to pay for increased spending, or for existing spending for that matter.

Only the open source edition i entirely Free. The closed source edition has some extra features (like USB support), but it's free for personal use.

Very nice, thanks. I'll have to consider it for my next project.
I really like D, and would give up C++ for it, but the one thing I feel is really missing is bindings for Qt. :(

But the roaming still applies unfortunately. The roaming charges for data in other European countries are outrageous.
