Actually the SI unit of temperature is the Kelvin, defined as the fraction 1/273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water the triple point being that temperature and pressure at which the material can coexist in all three phases (solid, liquid and gas) in equilibrium Celsius/Centigrade is defined as Kelvin+273.16, one degree C representing the same temperature change as one Kelvin.
That link was broken when I tried it. This one is the Regs take on the story in question, which links to this study by the Robert Frances Group (which you can read online) showing linux cheaper then Windows or Solaris...
You pays your money and picks your analyses, I supose.
0 degrees - the energy at which a hydrogen atom is at rest. 1 degree would be the energy at which hydrogen is one quantum state higher than rest.
Not gonna work, you can't get a hydrogen atom at rest. I'm talking zero point energy here. Not the latest craze for free energy but the energy remaining at absolute zero - it's less than a quantum and so can't be emitted. You can't get an atom at rest.
See this from google
1 length - the distance across 1 hydrogen atom
How are you going to define that distance? What value of the wave equation for a positron do you want to choose as your boundary?
I agree with you, Smith is good, Burroughs, not so good.
My favourite SF character has to be Nicholas van Rijn. I sort of wanted to grow up to be Nick....
I don't have a favourite writer but Ray Bradbury, Eric Frank Russell, Anderson, PKD have to be on the short list. The Martian Chronicles is so well written. If you like characterization with the tech firmly in the background read some Russell.
My nomination for best short story (sf) is Who Goes There? by John W.Campbell, much better than either of the films based on it.
A few random authors - Frederic Brown, Hal Clement, James White, Keith Laumer
Worse, we use Novell GroupWise - probably the worst piece of arse email/groupware product on the face of the earth
My nominations for this award are, in second place Lotus Notes, a monumentally crap piece of software, exceeded only by DEC TeamLinks (which has been known as TeamStinks for very good reason). Actually you could reverse the order and I wouldn't complain, they are both utter sh-one-t.
I expect that's what was said about WordPerfect and 1-2-3. Unless the barrier to entry is raised high enough there is always going to be a newer better product.

Considering a Rolex Oyster (for example) runs 8k-12k ukp where a reasonable battery watch (Seiko,Citizen etc) runs 100-300 ukp I may as well just treat watches as disposable - it's still way cheaper than buying a Rolex.
There is no technical reason to have a mechanical watch. They have the "work of art", sentimental value, but that's the only value there is. Sorry.
Er, how about EMP?:-)

Why bother with X?
Install lrp or ipcop and use it as a router/firewall, it should be ok for that sort of use.
It may be ok as a print server for a lan, but I'm not so sure about that - maybe a minimal install would cover it.
Oh, even though I'm an emacs man (or t.h.e. for some stuff) I really wouldn't install it here, either:-) Small is beautiful here.
Don't forget that it's only water resistant until you have the battery replaced. Manufacturers might guarantee their watches when new but as soon as the seal is broken....
When I thought I needed a new watch I was thinking of one with a solar cell as a dial (Citizen iirc), but the old one's ok now I know how to set it. It was water resistant to 100m (10 bar) but not any more - it may be better with a new 'O' ring but there's no way I'm going swimming in it.
Like I said, though, IANAL. I'm not even an engineer, yet.
Why not even an enigneer? Why regard engineers as less than lawyers? Except on a solely fiscal level would you rather be someone who creates or someone who adds cost?
NB this is an oversimplification as there is a need for lawyers and they are not purely overhead - I am arguing FOR engineers, not against lawyers.
I'm reminded of a story of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (an uber-engineer if ever there was one) travelling on a coach which lost a wheel. Being practical he supervised/fixed the broken wheel and got back into the coach to resume the journey - none of the other passengers would then speak to him as he had demonstrated practical ability and must therefore have been of a lower class.
If I remember correctly for a person to have sickle-cell both parents have to pass on the gene, but having the gene from only one parent provides protection from malaria without the problems.
From an evolutionary viewpoint this is a good bet - malaria has been one of humanitys biggest killers (if not the biggest). As a species the sickle cell gene makes sense - if you're unlucky to have it from both parents it royally sucks.

Allright, with the incredibly obvious exception of self-incrimination.
It's not a right in all countries - we no longer have a right to silence in the U.K:-( It now goes something like "You do not have to say anything but if you fail to mention something you later rely on in court it may damage your case"
And whistle-blowers keep their identities, not their information, secret.
But what about journos trying to keep the identities of whistle-blowers secret?
1. A whistle-blower doesn't have secrets. That's the nature of the whistle he's blowing.
Except his identity?
3. No one ever gave you or anyone the right to keep your mouth shut. Our society values the right to safety over that of silence. Even the right to free speech has exceptions, including, specifically, public hazard.
When was the Fifth Amendment repealled? And what happend to Mirander (sp?) - the bit about "you do not have to say anything..." ?
It's easier/better to switch the PSU off at the PSU if it has a switch (no, not the front switch). Then switch the PC on with no a.c. power, this will discharge the caps in the psu - often the fans will spin slightly. I wouldn't necessarily believe that the case was grounded with a switched off ATX psu without checking - I haven't bothered to check th specks so I use a wrist strap. YMMV
This may well be because of the 55mph limit. This is the main speed at which consumption figures are quoted for cars and so manufacturers optimize mpg for that speed. If the figures were quoted at 65mph then the mpg would be optimized for that speed.
English can be quite precise if one wishes to take sufficient trouble, most people don't bother - myself included. You could say that languages are imprecise (restricitng ourselves to human languages) without needing to specify English.
Anyway in no sense would I consider myself to have chidden you, that has conotations of rebuke and passion in my comments that were and are not present. If you feel that my comments were chiding I might suggest that you book some sessions with a therapist:-) (I feel the need to start adding emoticons)
Cowardice is not the same as caution, or having the wit to know when and how best to proceed. This sets up the climax at Orodruin where the ring causes Frodo's failure, or temptation.

Not if it's classed as a motorbike.

Cowardice:
want of courage to face danger;faintheartedness;pusillanimity
Caution:
4 . The taking of heed; 'provident care, wariness against evil' as a kind or quality of conduct... prudence in regard to danger.
The distinction does appear to be part of the words definitions.
