I dont think you understand how fast the floor is rising. The ONLY people that can get away with locking hardware in the consumer space right now is companies that enjoy government monopoly protection (patent, copyright, telecom/cable)
The important part is that when we send food and supplies, part of the supplies should be education tech. Its going to take a very long time to raise the floor in Africa, but tech modestly and intelligently applied will make incredibly widespread progress.

THe people who work on autonomous cars have very different backgrounds and degrees then those that design music websites.
