Why cant we design a Linux based console OS? Thats the part everyone is missing. We dont want Linux on the Desktop, we want Linux in the dedicated gaming device. THAT is what a Steambox is, a PC configured to act mostly as a gaming console that YOU control.

Steambox is more then a physical box Valve will ship, its an idea. Take standard PC parts and make them into a dedicated console that anyone can build.

The problem with Microsoft's solution is that all the advantages were for Microsoft. Every one saw that and said no. Sure they could do some cool things if they had been able to implement it, but first and foremost it was so they could exert unprecedented control over the device and the software. Keep the discs as the physical license is good for everyone, considering the alternatives.

The problem is either we can have private comms or not. Right now the US government is saying that private communication is flat out illegal. If you have a service that is hardened against snooping they will force you to open it to them. If they have the capability to snoop, they will. Its a human fact. The time has come to stop this madness and tell the government private comms are a right. That CALEA-style laws ordering access is not in the best interests of our nation and has been proven to be repeatedly and unbelievably abused. There is no middle ground.
