They are trying to monetize something that should be almost free. They are injecting ads to make money off something that should cost almost nothing to run. Its parasitic. They arent injecting ads to improve the service, but to leech cash. Its an economic model that should be mocked and derided at every turn.
Why cant we design a Linux based console OS? Thats the part everyone is missing. We dont want Linux on the Desktop, we want Linux in the dedicated gaming device. THAT is what a Steambox is, a PC configured to act mostly as a gaming console that YOU control.
The 'cheap' one will run everything the 'good' one will. The vast majority of people keep their phones in cases. No one will notice, nor will it matter.
It takes time. I have a 'Steambox' in my living room right now, and Gabe is absolutely spot on when he points out that input is a huge problem. Steambox is more then a physical box Valve will ship, its an idea. Take standard PC parts and make them into a dedicated console that anyone can build.
Some people have done this with programmable microcontrollers (ATTiny in USB host mode) for PS3 controller charging (they require negotiation to charge). Lost the link, but its pretty trivial to do.
WIth this same line of reasoning we could charge every employee of the NSA with treason as well. The NSA with their ILLEGAL activities have seriously weakened trust in the web and infosec as a whole.
The overriding sentiment is we personally dont want to be watched, but its perfectly ok for the government to watch everything else. I am in total disagreement with this, but its the American sentiment.
The point I was making is that pointing out cost/GB disparity adds nothing to the conversation. We currently use SSDs for one class of use-case and we use HDD for another use-case class. Directly comparing cost per GB, as things are now, is unproductive.
That dell will consume an order of magnitude more power. Rapsberry PIs are compelling because they are cheap, low power and flexible. We all have old laptops lying around, but im sure as hell not going to leave my Dothan equipped Dell laptop plugged in 24/7
1 GHZ on the desktop was good enough, but it wasnt until the Core line that we reached a good desktop plateau of power/cost. ARM has yet to hit the 'so much power leftover after running the UI' stage yet.
Why in god's name would you push ARM over Intel? You only use ARM when the power envelope calls for it. Intel spanks the ever loving shit out of ARM in everything but power consumption and Intel is working hard at that too.
A Steambox is a PC styled as a gaming console. You generally only play games on the system and it is dedicated to gaming/entertainment. I have 3 Steamboxen.
The problem with Microsoft's solution is that all the advantages were for Microsoft. Every one saw that and said no. Sure they could do some cool things if they had been able to implement it, but first and foremost it was so they could exert unprecedented control over the device and the software. Keep the discs as the physical license is good for everyone, considering the alternatives.
This is a very Chinese attitude. The nation can crumble around me, if it is deemed corrupt. It is the IDEALS that drive us. When we lose our ideals, we lose the country.
This thing is pretty much exactly like Chromecast and AppleTV with Sony specific features tacked on. The only thing surprising here is that Sony actually made it.
The reason iphone 4 didnt get Siri is because of the mics, not CPUs. My ipad 2 is basically a large Iphone 4S and it doesnt get Siri either because of the mic issue.
If I go into Best Buy and through their advertising they inform me that I can get all of season 8 of breaking bad on DVD for $X. If I then take the box home and only find HALF of season 8 in it, im going ot go back to Best Buy and say 'WTF'
The problem is either we can have private comms or not. Right now the US government is saying that private communication is flat out illegal. If you have a service that is hardened against snooping they will force you to open it to them. If they have the capability to snoop, they will. Its a human fact. The time has come to stop this madness and tell the government private comms are a right. That CALEA-style laws ordering access is not in the best interests of our nation and has been proven to be repeatedly and unbelievably abused. There is no middle ground.
Thats great. Form a group and lobby for the repeal of the 2nd amendment. Until that time, your example is meaningless.
Thats why i qualified it with 'a gaming console YOU control'

Please state the nature of the transportation emergency.
SSD and HDD arent the same thing and are used for different but overlapping purposes. Comparing them directly is just plain ignorance.

THe US government is ignoring a major tenet of our own laws. People need to be punished for this, or its time for revolution.

The hand off functionality isnt the only way to get video to the device. Tab casting.

You can replace the spinny drive with Compact Flash in most cases.
