Actually, if we're thinking of the same instance it was a trademark not a copyright. In the case with Second Life they licensed their trademark in order to defend it. The gentleman invited a "cease and desist" order from them but got a "permit and continue" letter instead.
In licensing their trademark to the parody site they are exercising control over the trademark and can show they weren't letting people use it without permission. These are two sides of the same coin with regard to protecting Intellectual Property.
I'm not for the banning of frankly any form of art/entertainment that doesn't hurt someone or break a given law.
But, at the same time I don't see it as that big a deal that they are suggesting a ratings system for video games that needs to be upheld. In the U.S. do we not have a rating system for movies. Other than the level of interaction how is a video game different? They both create a visual element that is portrayed to the player/viewer.
I'm all for a fair and impartial rating system for Video games that mimics that of Film. Of course the difficulty lies in fair and impartial.
Is it possible to "Un-hack" your 360? I was considering buying a refurbished 360 and didn't know what recourse I'd have if I found myself with a hacked box.
I've seen other articles where they explain that human skin is airtight enough to survive space exposure, it just doesn't stand up to the negative pressure very well.
Why not simply have several layers of suit based upon the needs of the situation.
EVA: Pressure suit, Heavy Life Support, Radiation Insulation, Temperature Insulation, zero G equipment
Moon: Pressure suit, Heavy Life Support, Radiation Insulation, Temperature Insulation, Low G equipment
Mars: Pressure suit, Light Life Support, Heavy Cold Temperature Insulation
I'm sure there are a lot of high tech solutions to keeping warm that would be less bulky than the current space-suits.
Keep in mind you also assume that the aliens that are coming here would _want_ to make contact with us. Perhaps they are a little less invasive than you would think.
To study a species/planet prior to first contact is something that has been hashed and re-hashed time and time again in Sci-fi ( I understand that looking to science fiction for backing is fallacious, but very few other mental exercises are made to contemplate this phenomenon ).
If I wanted to turn a world into a profitable trading partner then I would try to make sure my first impression would be greeted rather than seen as an immediate threat.
Besides, we all know that the Roswell aliens were Ferengi.:-)
When does Sony plan on releasing licensed endorsed peripherals?
I understand that one of the nice things about subscribing to industry standard protocols is that third parties can make compatible hardware for your system, but the lack of representation by "guaranteed to work" hardware makes it difficult at best to get the experience you want. I would be willing to pay more than fair market value for a comfortable, long battery life, reliable Bluetooth gaming headset.
Even better would be to make it able to route output sound from the PS3 to the same headset for when I don't feel like waking my wife with dying aliens in Resistance: Fall of Man.
It would be nice to see when I could buy a Sony brand Wireless Guitar for Guitar Hero and play it on my PS3. What's the point in having a wireless system sitting in the entertainment center if I hae to plug stuff into it to play.
Actually it depends on what the program is doing.
There are 5 levels of Certification for the big planes:
A: Failure = Most crew and passengers dead, wounded or loss of craft.
Uptime: 99.999999%+
B: Failure = Few dead, few injured, probably monitored.
Uptime: 99.9995%+
C: Failure = Minor injuries
Uptime: 99.9%+
D: Failure = Loss of data
Uptime: good if it runs
E: Failure = What was that code doing anyways?
Uptime: who cares
There are things running on major airplanes all over the world that are Class E, I don't see this as being anything major as a secondary data recorder. Also, those certifications are for the big planes, small regional jets don't have anywhere near the Software Safety requirements of the big boys.
Actually all that "turn you devices off during takeoff and landing" thing is a bunch of crap. The thought of any hand-held portable device causing any kind of interference with flight-deck instrumentation is insane. If a plane can take a direct lightning strike I don't think your little iPod is gonna do much to it.
The same with turn your phone off for the duration of the flight. The Airlines and Airplane manufacturers conned the FAA into restricting in flight phone use by arguing that the hand-off rates for ground based cell phone towers would cause all the poor little phone companies a headache. That's why Airlines have flights where you can use THEIR local cell phone node with THEIR roaming charges.
So, you see, interference from an iPod, no so much.
I would agree in general with your stipulation that we have gotten ourselves into this situation with our refining of several energy sources in our economy into one energy source that has become dominant.
However, the problem with diversification is that with the way our global economy, and standard economic practices, is that something has to get enough of a percieved backing in a consumer base for the large companies and governments with the money to research them will do anything. If GM, Ford, BMW, Audi, Toyota, and Nissan all went different routes with regard to how they were going to become independant of Mid-East oil it wouldn't work. On top of the development of the medium for such independance is the infrastructure to support it.
Right now, Oil has that infrastructure. Electricity has a distribution network capable of reaching most everyone with a car. Hydrogen is similar to Oil in how it can be transported which is why it is so enticing as a replacement. I fear the utopian future of diversified energy sources lacks the simplicity of a single or even dual infrastructure for the worlds energy needs.
But the problem with writing down the password is that it breaks down the "Two Thing" security paradigm.
The "Two Things" are something you have and something you know. ATM security is based on this paradigm.
By writing the passwords down you have reduced it to two things you have.

Is that for pr0n spam?
But then http://gucomics.com/ would sue, they already have GUforums. :-)
