2, Every couple of months I see a couple of kids get involved in things that are illegal or immoral that is traced back to MySpace. I'm not picking on them for any other reason that 80% of social networking traffic is on their site. The Aol chat rooms were just as dangerous and in 5 more years MySpace will be gone and something else will be the most popular thing on the web.
The danger is real, although a bit sensationalized. I just don't want to see any more kids in trouble when we know unsupervised time online due to parental neglect or lack of knowledge or whatever cause gives kids more freedom than they can handle. Sure, its 'harmless'. Until its your daughter in lingerie or your son who can't get a job... And thats before you start talking about the more serious types of trouble they can get into.
Between sexual predators, kids who tell all and then regret it when it comes time to look for a job, our daughters posts nearly nude photos and our sons enjoying that a bit more than is healthy, these are a bad idea. I just checked the traffic numbers for Myspace, 3rd most popular in the US and 5th on the planet... Where are the safeguards?
MS would never be in first place without the default page being set by them in IE. Personally, I never leave a computer set to MS as the homepage, I switch them to Google.:) I'd much rather look at that then MSN gossip.
I've got my exchange server setup with 2 gig mailboxes... Fortunately I've got a small number of users so thats not a problem. Its a shame SCSI drives are so expensive in quantity.
I've been a Palm supporter for years and I think its a shame whats happened. Years of fighting have distracted from the products? Where's the innovation? Personally, I switched to Windows Mobile 5.0 and I'm happy.
I simply can't wait to get my hands on one of these and start overclocking. Getting them out the door at 2.9 GHZ should mean there's some overclocking head room left in the chips. Probably not too much, but I'll take what I can get.
righto, take a look at my original post... all users are running 'user' accounts under windows XP pro, server 2003 as DC. I'm amazed that some programs are still installable. I will occasionally find a copy of skype or Barnie's games on a system... Why, go to all that effort just to get in trouble? People amaze me sometimes...
I love'em all, but you can't trust them to stay away from their computers. All are running under very limited users accounts on a domain and they still cause problems?! I for one would be glad for someone to sanitize CE software so I could even consider it.
I think these rules are good, there's no point in tricking people into clicking. They have to see a value then the ads serve their purpose. Go Go Google!
Putting this kind of emphasis on search is wise. MS knows this and put a vastly improved searching into Vista. Some say its better than other desktop searches. This is similiar to having a good memory in a human being, quite useful in practice.
I don't substantially disagree with you on any pof these points. I will say that having the marketing muscle, development budget and exposure has, and some small segment of that involving the use of the word linux and contributing some small amount of code back to the community *will prove beneficial in the long run*.
Lowering development costs is a huge reason to use any OS, paid or not. otherwise I'd have written the OS I'm using on my laptop... and so would the billion other people who have computers...
Wait, isn't compiling your own kernal a linux idea? Full circle we have come, my friend.
it became a huge part of the mod'ing scene for the ps2, leading to all sorts of hacks. Once you give a kid root access its only a matter of time before they figure out how to hack, steal and rip.iso's. Certainly, not everyone who got the linux kit used it for those purposes but they were one significant usage.

P2P is a great idea, and I predict that clusters of processing power at the residential will become a reality. Its just an evolution of P2P and distributed computing. Editing a DVD? Use dad's new 16 core machine to speed to work while you edit on a power sipping laptop with wi-max at the pool.
