It's amazing to me how afraid we get of Zombies, Aliens, Artificial Intelligence Singularity, a mysterious virus pandemic and yet, there is one thing that has caused the most death and suffering in the history of the human race, can you guess what it is?

Humans. We should be very afraid of ourselves. Crack open a history book and prepare to be horrified. Once upon a time, about 250 years ago, it was considered a noble way to die to dress up in fancy uniforms, powdered wigs with muskets in hand and line up across from each other and just massacre each other to pieces. You were considered a gentleman to die this way. Wives and children knew that once their husband/father was sent off to war this way, they would never see him again.

Up until recently, most civilizations have glorified war and essentially glorified death. That to me is something quite horrifying about our civilization. The fact that very few ever question this behavior is even more horrifying.

Tesla needs the Model 3 to succeed (the auto industry depends on volume), which is why they're betting the whole company on it.

    This is the key part.

    1) What Tesla needs to succeed, the economic market doesn't care about. Tesla either succeeds or it doesn't. Companies come and go. The strong survive, the weak fade into obscurity
    2) Tesla is indeed making a bet, as all companies do. Some more calculated than others. Some make good bets, some make bad bets. See #1

I hope Tesla succeeds because I like their mission but as for whether they will or not is dependent on a lot of factors that have nothing to do with whether Tesla's mission is a noble one or not. Such is the world we live in. Study economic game theory. I don't particularly care for the complete and utter apathy of it all but we're all thrust into this game against our will because all of our livelihoods depend on it. Some people are trying to do these micro-house homesteads in Arizona to live off the grid. Maybe something will pan out with that so we can all live "off the grid". Until then, we're stuck playing this forsaken game.

You should know just as well as I do, we used to get training especially around the time of the Internet Explosion followed by the DotCom bust because all these startups were hiring warm bodies leading up to y2k. There used to be this thing called *Research* & Development, you know R&D? They dropped the R and kept the D and along with that went the training. The reason for that is because GAP changed and CFO's didn't like seeing the non-capitalizable work on their balance sheet because it looks like a cost sink despite the fact that what really happens if you let smart people do their real work, they create patentable inventions that can make the company GINORMOUS amounts of cash. But you know just as well as I do, this has been broken for some time and any appeal to reason falls on deaf ears.
