since the poster makes perfectly valid points, and the grammar does not detract from them one bit, I'll have to assume when people are "speaking of ignorance....", *you* show up because you feel addressed or something? otherwise, what would be the meaning of your post? and to that I say: ignore ants! haha =D
he doesn't complain that they make no sense, he's just saying since he doesn't understand the reasons, it must be because of money. (how random delays would help with making more money he doesn't say though -- just that "must" be the reason)
"It took Sony about 18 months to get the PS3 to Argentina. Almost two years with the PSP."
those are not games, and those are not the delays of UP TO EIGHT DAYS (the horror!) this topic is about, is it? or, are you trying to say because the PS3 took 18 months to get to argentinia, game release delays of a few days make "no sense"? huh.
I actually thought about this recently.. and maybe being collective-minded has upsides as well as downsides? sure, they could put some pressure on the gov or at least the company who operated that plant, etc... get angry for a change... but maybe that's just how my "western" mind sees it, maybe it's not that simple. Ideally, we'd all be both, one huge family and critical individuals, sure... but I wouldn't be surprised if turns out to be easier for disciplined people to become critical individuals, than for selfish people to become disciplined. ^^
And it was kinda silly actually to compare that with Germany, I think... because even under the Nazis Germany was not a hive. It was a bunch of egostical go-alongs drunk on fear and power... okay, now I'm generalizing again (it's hard not to, when talking about "the Japanese", or "the West" etc.), but you get the idea, I think my first response was a bit knee-jerk.
Still, that was my first impression: "let's HOPE their gov does the right thing, because otherwise they don't seem like they would do anything about it". But maybe that says less about the Japanese than about my prejudices and media impressions.
actually, I don't really LIKE nuclear energy, much less propose it. however, I dislike mass hysteria and media blitzes more. I don't enjoy seeing people played like a piano.
so no, saying "it's not what people wide eyedly believe it is" does NOT equal "Nothing to see here, folks, don't worry your pretty little head", at least not for me. and it's ironic of to mock imaginary elitist smart people in reply to "here's some more knowledge than you had before", which you can't deny this chart represents. YES, it's nowhere near the full picture, NO, it's not really saying anything, it's just making a graphic out of numbers. the rest is your interpretation. and seeing how this cartoon stands against news media and a public who do anything BUT seeking the facts first, well, it is ironic to me. this chart is WORLDS better than anything than what many, if not most newspapers publish or tv stations reurgitate (e.g. just "radiation" without ANY quantification - that's basically the norm, with lots of scary adjectives which aren't technically a lie thrown in).. and it's a web cartoon ffs.
if that, to you, is the mouth piece of "nuclear proponents" and this chart their effort to educate people, while at the same time you can only imagine "nuclear proponents" to be against FUD -- well, that's two separate you got there, but they're just yours.
"And it doesn't even begin to address the issues of poor planning, mismanagement, cost cutting and secretiveness of the nuclear industry and the governments that are supposed to regulate them."
so? neither does the apple you might have eaten earlier. will you dismiss anything that doesn't solve all problems at once? again, the irony, considering you talk about shooting oneself in the foot...
considering all the... STUFF... I've seen on the intarwebs over the decade I've been on it.... I don't think it's that stupid to say "minors @ internet == HAS to include parental supervision"... I don't think that's stupid at all...
"Sure, their leadership system is odd enough to not even call it a democracy, but its part of their culture"
Well as a German, it's now part of my culture to highly detest this I guess... well, now I at least know why, funny how that works ^^ But no, other virtues don't make up for something specific that was criticized. Unless you can show that it's impossible to criticize your leadership or, *GASP*, strive for democracy while retaining "discipline and a strong sense of mutual help". Still kinda waiting for that...
"It was pure luck" --- Yeah.. or just think if the reactor would have been built and the operators would have operated it according to accepted safety standards! Oh wait... then *nothing* would have happened at all. Hmmm. Funny thing those hypothetical mind experiments. And no, according to how big a deal it WAS, what you describe is not "still a big deal", maybe it is to you. A couple of millions a year means a like a few cents per Swede, right? TV costs you way more than that. It also kills more people. In short: nahhhh...
On the other hand: If you smear personal stuff all over the net for no reason at all... petty, personal, mediocre stuff... then I sure as fuck will not fight for your right to be forgotten, as much as I accept it as valid. Because that's just dumb and on a level that is obsolete.
Yeah well.... actually I do sometimes value what I have to say, and that I, Johann Lau, am saying it, way, WAY more than what anyone else makes of it. In that respect (voluntarily stepping on a soapbox, that is): FUCK privacy! Big brother damn well ought to be aware I'm watching the little shit, without blinking. I have a soul, I have an insanely bloated ego, therefore I am afraid of no man, and I say: if you don't speak up for yourself, others WILL speak for you, third parties WILL believe them, and that tomb will be just as real as any prison (which you very likely will never get thrown into, anyway). Be on the offensive at all times, and be a person with a face and a name. Or don't, but that's my 2 cents anyway:P
"Follow the money." --- But that's not what you're doing? You just make shit up and then add that sentence to the end to make it seem like more than that. Also, I missed when Greenpeace rallied against solar panels and whatnot... I'm not saying there isn't PLENTY out of whack and a lot of knee-jerk BS when it comes to "tree huggers"... but that also seems to apply to your little theory:P
the fuck? hey mods, lay off the crack for a sec and try to ANSWER in actual words what you mumbled by moderating my comment +1 whooosh, yeah? just an idea.
yeah, and then there's the question, WHERE DO ALL THESE ADDITIONAL SOULS COME FROM... ???
maybe it's just a bunch of souls who get continually watered down or something. that would explain one or two things ^^
yeah, and then there's just being stupid and getting bitten for it. "victims", lol? how in the FUCK is anybody getting screwed over by facebook a "victim"? the mind truly boggles.
how does "growing up in the internet age" NOT mean being familiar with your computer, harddrive, usb-sticks and whatnot? are you seriously saying it's sane to upload your photos, then delete them locally? nah, sorry, I don't buy that, and even 15 year olds (you act like this is extremly young, we're not talking about toddlers ffs..) can easily understand that, IF they're actually thinking for themselves. otherwise, that's what parents who pay attention are there for. I think it's much more offensive to defend this idiotic behaviour than to call it what it is, idiotic...
pay for your bandwidth -- or you DO get what you pay for. ultimately, one way or the other. "casual people" weren't expected to read and write even centuries ago. if this is the information age, managing your own web presence is the equivalent of literacy. sure, stuff does need to get simpler, more standardized, whatever... but this whole mindset of being fed and clicking pretty icons can not lead to anything good. it's a fact.
Karl Marx said that the industrial revolution polarized the world into two groups: those who own the means of production and those who work on them.
Today’s means of production aren’t greasy cogs and steam-spewing engines, but that doesn’t mean they don’t divide us. Industrial data is all around us, and search engines, governments, financial markets, social networks and law enforcement agencies rely on it.
We willingly embrace this “Big Data” world. We share, friend, check in and retweet our every move. We swipe loyalty cards and enter frequent flyer numbers. We leave a growing, and apparently innocent trail of digital breadcrumbs in our wake.
But as we use the Internet (Internet) for “free,” we have to remember that if we’re not paying for something, we’re not the customer. We are in fact the product being sold — or, more specifically, our data is.
So here’s a tricky question: Who owns all that data?
But what are we complaining about? It’s all free. Having to move our bookmarks is not really a huge problem, but we all seem appalled that large companies care about money. Since when is this an anomaly? Company sees something cool, hopes to make money, buys it, doesn’t make enough money, poof. Here’s a truth for you: most companies only care about your data insofar as this data can help them make money. They have this site and you fill it. You fill it.
So to the extent you're locked in, that's the extent you are not on the open web. The perfectly open web has zero lock-in. The silos are totally locked-in and therefore not on the open web.
Your site should be the source and hub for everything you post online. This doesn't exist yet, it's a forward looking vision, and I and others are hard at work building it. It's the future of the indie web.
But apparently you can't imagine loving in a wild, actually exhausting way without there being some aggression to it? Hence my saying that don't actually know actual "loving lust" or however you would want to call it (I DO mean things that require putting on a helmet, not just cuddling..). And I say, and still think, that because FOR ME, there is no turning back from the fullness of it, and what you are describing is just a sad little shadow of that.
Normally I wouldn't care, but if you feel the need to tell someone who thinks the idea of being enemies during sex is silly, that they only know the boring kind, well, you're kinda putting yourself on the line there. I neither lack the imagination nor the experience to call that, sorry.
if you really think that's true, that just means you can't love even while having sex in a non-boring way... and guess what, that's pretty much you and a bunch of other shriveled, deprecated hearts:P
Same here. I am kinda nostalgic about the Amiga, but of the billions of games I "loved" the only ones I can stand to still play for more than 3 minutes is stuff like Speedball 2. 99.9% of the games are only great in my memory... until I load them up into an emulator, then it's just excrutiating ^^ Some stuff should just rest in peace I guess.
But you're equating derivation with remaking something, which is nonsense...
Now, I don't know KQ. If it has a truly great story, I can see the point of translating it into a more modern medium. Just like good songs should be covered every now and then, because they're still good songs and "stuff happened" in the meantime.
But even then, if you just 100% recreate the thing, instead of switching it up a bit -- why bother? I wish remakes would make more of a point of NOT sticking to the original. No, increased resolution doesn't count. Neither does new music, especially when it's worse than the old one. Change the puzzles, enhance the mechanics, twist the story. DO something, *anything* with it. Don't just redress the same old thing.
If you think these crappy games from the 80s are perfect and magic, even their authors would laugh at you, I'm sure. they're commercial, done with a deadline and for shitty hardware. To remake them without substantially changing them is foolishness IMHO. It's kinda icky actually.
Sometes, sure. But sometimes, telling people that they have NO FUCKING CLUE what's best for them doesn't mean you're a jerk at all, it means you're paying attention and possess a spine.
I've been in debates where people claimed literally *all* evil stems from religion. I don't even know where to start... a somewhat aware five year old realizes this is not true?? it does get a bit scary sometimes... it's all about the Dunning-Kruger effect I guess ^^
but no, don't apologize for invoking Godwin's law, at least not to me.... the whole "the world cannot be free and in peace until religion is completely extinguished" DOES seem like a Nazi-style crusade, to me, "just" on a spiritual level... and no, just because some (or even a lot, doesn't matter) religious type feel the same way does not make that okay.
like noam chomsky said, the first step to fight terrorism is not to participate in it. the same goes for "fighting those irrational brownshirts".. the first step: not be one.
sure, I may be a hypocrite when I say this, no wait, I am... but I do think it's still correct, unfortunately. we're in bad shape, people...
word. just look at this discussion... fuck glenn beck, what about google and social networking? dicussing conspiracies and the theories relating to them CAN be fun or even insightful, but no, the atheists just HAVE to have a go at the *other religious folks (in their absence of course, to make that bit more worthwhile).
* yes, you read me correctly: I think firm belief in no superior being can become a religion, too, and this whole "discussion" is just a sad example of that. when I saw it had nearly 700 comments I was hoping to read some rants about how people should fucking start OWNING their stuff on the web, instead of giving it all up to faceless corps... or ANYTHING really, anything except another rehash of the tired old "those crazy fundies are so bad... and I'm not really any good either, so let me just use them to make me feel a bit better, ahhhh" "debates". talk about witch hunting, or rather kicking old people when they're on the ground. actually, not just your grandkids, even YOU (not *you*, I mean everybody obviously) presently can benefit from... being a bit more selective!
take a billion pics, sure.... but every now and then, re-evaluate the keepers.
a billion pictures do NOT say more than a thousand well selected ones. a billion pictures are just meaningless noise.
