What happens when chipsets like the nForce only cost a few bucks (this will eventually happen)?
This will empower things like Tivo and DVD players and even TVs with great gaming abilities. The Microsft tax will NOT be useful for these devices. So why isn't there a REAL movement for putting Linux into these things? The world WILL need it sooner or later.
I'd like to see it sooner.
Imagine an open console spec for all manufacturers to use as they please...
This is the follow up to the Excursion. Its called the Excretion and it will be targetted at the Soccer Mom who needs to haul around her kids, 500 lbs of cappucino AND wreck the environment more than the last model
Intel tried to get the consumer with the P4's ultra high speeds at the sacrifice of clock-for-clock performance. Although the P4 isn't even close to dead yet, it certainly hasn't been the seller that they had thought it would be. Unfortunately for Intel, they have overlooked multi-processor P4s for the time being. AMD may have them over a barrel here.
I wonder if dual 1Ghz AMD's will do anything for Joe consumer? I am sure that we are bound to see "2000 Mhz" in big letters across the Best Buy circulars. Yes, this is misleading but could this finally be the important weapon that AMD has been looking for? Possibly... I know that I want one simply for the sake of sheer geekness. My 650 Athlon works fine for now, but SETI should fly on this thing...
The OS is coming to a maturity and MS is going through a middle-aged crisis. With Win2K, there really isn't a *need* to upgrade anymore. Its stable and simple refinement is all that it needs. So now we are bound to see useless things like 3D GUIs and 3 year licenses.
I think Win2k was the best and worst thing that ever happened to MS. Its a great OS and the end of their revenue stream. What happens when the market saturates with it? There only chance is to push XP as a subscription into the consumer markets where Win2K doesn't have a foothold yet.
Because of slashdot, I was brainwashed into the "all patents are bad" mind set. And then the other day, I received a gift certificate from amazon and decided that that this really wouldn't be violating the terms of my ban (I wasn't spending *my* money, after all).
As it turns out, the shopping experience at amazon was very pleasant and intuitive. They have apparently put lots of time and money into their site.
Because they patented something like one-click shopping doesn't make me hate them. After all, someone else surely would have done it. And what would this have done to their ease of use?
If they make the patent *free*... Now you might get me to spend real money!
If someone leaves a GUN unsecured in their house, then they should be charged for murder if someone breaks in, takes the weapon and then uses it for murder.
If the gun is secure - i.e. reasonable security - then there should be no murder charges.
We are talking about rooting a *nix box here... This isn't a hole or anything minor. This is a blatant lack of securing a weapon!
Its easy to see that Linus tried to make good on his promise to have 2.4 out by the end of '00 (so close!). But when it didn't hit schedule, he had no problems eating his words.
Some things can't be bought, I guess...
Actually,
The whole Ozone/CFC thingy was already discovered as a patent scam (the R12 patent expired so 3M had to convieniently intoduce the ozone friendly R34 and government ate it up). Many of the warmer states such as Arizona have already reverted back to the use of R12 refridgerant since this scam was brought to light. Since the patent on R12 has expired, it is very cheap compared to the R34 replacement.
Unfortunately - the whole world still thinks R12 is bad for the ozone so the patented R34 is still predominant even though billions can be saved by using R12.
Screw the consumer again. 3M must be taking tips from Apple...
AOL users are so aplenty and used to getting commecials crammed down their throats that a boycott would never work. Heck, you may actually be able to charge many of them to watch these new ads.
Why is it that nearly all of the population believe that stock splits will make them rich?
To set the record straight, when a stock splits under normal (non break-up) circumstances, a shareholder gets more shares, but the price decreases by a proportional amount. The market capitalization of the company stays the same. No money is automagically created. Nobody gets rich.
For example, if a stock splits 2 for 1, you will end up with twice as many shares, but they will be worth half as much. This is not rocket science.
A company generally splits their stock to get the share price from getting too high. This implies that the share price has risen significantly. THIS IS WHERE THE MONEY IS MADE.
If a company splits up, then a stockholder will get shares in the two (or more) separate entities.
But to illustrate the power of stupid people in large quantities - there are entire investment strategies based on stock splits. Since most ignorant people out there will buy a stock based solely on a stock split announcement, investment teams often target these stocks and invest in them before the annoucement and then pawn them off to the idiots after the announcement.
But to clarify - making money in the stock market requires that the market capitalization of the company needs to change and stock splits do not affect this.
If this materializes, I would imagine that fingerprints, mouse poop, and/or scratches would render these useless. If someone who has any say in the matter is reading this, please create a sealed cartidge for the finished product so that my music doesn't end up in a useless format on the floor of my brother's car.
What about AOL? I actually set gave my unused *free* internet account to an AOL user to save him the grief of dealing with such a lousy company but I returned a week later to find out he went back to AOL because it was *easier*. Yes, thats right - paying over $20 a month to have an ISP crap ads down your throat all day. Made me sick to the point of going postal. And then it made sense. Bottom line is that Windows/Linux/Be/etc aren't easy to use for the average Joe "Non-technical" Consumer. If MS can put one of these boxes together and partner with some broadband co's, then we will see a real winner. Just understand that you are the minority.
def. Monopoly - A market that exists with only one vendor and barriers such that no other vendors may enter. Other companies have NO PROBLEM entering the market. Microsoft is the PREDOMINANT software vendor - not a monopolist. They are here for a reason, although not for long (break up or not, MS is going down). The only other company that could hang in the consumer market right now is Apple and they screw their customers all the time. With all the stock market madness right now, Linux is just beginning to see the kind of financial backing that it needs to replace Windows. Give it two years - Linux will replace Windows (and all their other MS apps - unless the giant bows and starts to support the free OS). The taste will be much sweeter if Microsoft is left as a whole.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Linux is free. Don't forget that the Chinese are very thrifty people and probably chose Linux for this in the first place.
Once the market is saturated, who needs to buy Linux anymore? I've stopped buying the stuff because everybody and their brother's mother has a distro that I can *legally* make a copy of. Don't get me wrong, I love Linux but let go of my Redhat stock because selling free software isn't exactly a great business model for a $16 billion company (read: the stock is way overpriced already and won't be jumping unless we see more fools with money).

"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers"
Hey, I work for PwC also and if there is one thing that I've noticed, its that the "people that be" would never go with anything along the lines of Linux because they are so cozy with Microsoft. Very cozy. PwC Europe rolls out Netware5 but before the Americas can do likewise, the "people that be" decide to roll out NT instead. This makes absolutely no sense until one realizes that MS is behind this move. NT doesn't support the amount of users that PwC has. NT [in the PwC rollout format] doesn't support LDAP - something PwC relies heavily on!!! If there was any advantages of NT over NW5 (and there are none that could be explained to me by "the people that be"), then they would be nullified by the fact that Europe is already on NW5. But PwC sticks with NT and sends me to classes to prepare me for the problems I will encounter because of this lousy decision. "The people that be" need to realize that a company of this size should have a quality in-house software department instead of relying on half-baked external solutions. Example - I just submitted my time and expense report with an app based on a 7 year old Watcom database engine. PwC doesn't have the mindset for Linux. Darren GTS Detroit

Almost always cheaper than regular gas, although a bit worse for the environment.
Not after they are converted to run on vegetable oil!
Imagine filling up yourself and your car at the McDonalds on the corner. The best part is that you exhaust smells like fries!
I've got a port that emits a good deal of IR. After some broccoli or a can of beans, you can sniff it from hundreds of yards away!

Yesterday - I took the advice from a Slashdot read and loaded an evelope up with glitter so that the mail sorters would get all hosed up...
Hewlett-Packard: responsible for confusing generations of calculator users.
So these generations of users were confusing? What does this have to do with HP?
