... 19mb of it's firmware wasn't taken up with security to stop people hacking it for homebrew. In fact, it's been theorized that if Sony ditched most of the security then they would have space to implement the features that are being hacked into it by the homebrew scene.
Having played Auto Assault, I'd be reluctant to try another MMO on wheels. The intensive controls and almost constant combat made it one of the most anti-social mmo's I've ever played. There was virtually no communication between players in the field. It went to server merge after just 2 months iirc. Shame, it had a lot of potential for fun.
It took 5 years to reach a point where everyone had a DVD player in their house. The lifespan of VHS was ~20 years. So DVD gets itself fully established in every home and just 1 year on there's 2 new formats both trying to beat each other down for marketshare. Most consumers are expecting to get another 14 years of life from DVD (and most were told by the sales guys that it would be "The format that's gonna last a lifetime").
The only way they will get people to stop buying regular DVD's now is to stop making them, and I can see great things happening then. Consumers having become enlightened with the ways of Centralized Media Storage and Network Media Clients, coupled with faster and fatser internet and larger storage capabilities will just move directly to 100% illegal downloading. This will of course cause the colapse of hollywood and see all major movie stars pan-handling in the streets of downtown LA.
If I had to pick a format, I would make it HDDVD. Remember Sony's history with proprietary audio and video formats? Betamax, Minidisc, Hi-MD, ATRAC3, UMD. You can almost taste the failure.
I can just see Joe Public managing that. Not. These devices are meant for average people to use , not technophiles with plenty of knowledge and time on their hands.
Good job I don't read news sites intended for Joe Public then, else I might have offended someone. This is Slashdot, where people use velocity sensors on laptops to remote control robotic cleaners. I fail to see where Joe Public comes into play.
This technology is a year behind where we should be right now. It's not new at all, it's been done before several times. It's probably the cheapest out of the box implementation but that hardly makes it news. Where's the headline for £10 mp3 players?
$200? How about no. Buy original Xbox for £50, perform softmod, install XBMC, rejoice!
Really these stories are very mundane now I've been watching content from my PC on my TV for over a year now, even streaming content directly from the net onto my TV for just as long. It's not wireless, but you already had cat5 running to the tv area right?
The only thing that XBMC is lacking is support for HD. The Xbox's poor little cpu just can't handle decoding it. As soon as the 1st "next gen" console is capable of runnign unsigned code that will change.
Why buy the overpriced PS3 when you can softmod an original Xbox to do the same and more using XBMC for under £50?
I've been watching streaming content from the net directly on my TV, along with playing DivX (and prety much all known audio/video formats) from a SMB share for well over a year now. This is not big new and exciting, this is just the way that entertinment is consumed now. This story would have been exciting a year ago, but now it just shows how far behind apple and the rest really are.

... find large group of stormtroopers.
Step 2: Force Jump
Step 3: Force Pull
Step 4: Sing "It's raining men"
...most of the stations I listen to on a regular basis are located in the UK or Europe.
Be sure to implement suitable anti-virus to prevent transmission of Avian Flu.

Blackthorne Online anyone?

No, that's making use of available technology.
If you consider watching TV to be "loafing around" then why are you even posting in regard to this article?
