I speculate a tin-foil hat will do you little good against this "microwave audio" device. According to TFA, all standard forms of defense against auditory input are nonfunctional, since the device transmits audio directly into your skull, bypassing your ear altogether.

This is surely the dawn of a new age for conspiracy theories, second only to that of the advent of recorded media (with all of those damned subconscious messages).

People are much too obsessed with the image of a diabolical Cheetos-eating hacker without any social skills. The most effective criminals in the world are friendly, well-dressed, and outgoing. And usually only technologically-competent enough to get the job done.

Ever heard of mustard squirters? They squirt your back with mustard, then inform you of the fact you have mustard on your back. They proceed—presumably generously—to wash it off for you: In doing so, they take your wallet. No technology. Tremendous success rate.

Come on. Some people out there need to read the works of Frank Abagnale, or at least Kevin Mitnick.

Frankly, though, I'm hoping that, rather than little feature additions like this, they do one of the following: * Make it NOT an absolutely ridiculous memory hog. * Invest some time in making it work with Firefox better (i.e., without the crashes). * Make it work under 64-bit because, frankly, it's really, really stupid that it doesn't. They've had half a decade now; I don't care how poorly written their code-base is.

Here at the University of Southern Maine we have a computer science lab full of machines: We have Sun systems, Red Hat Linux systems, and Windows XP systems. I think the original intention was to expose people to work on different platforms, but it's broken down as follows:

The Red Hat Linux systems are there for study and work. The Windows XP systems are for video games. Nobody knows why the Sun systems are there.

If there was some free software solution to the video game problem, there wouldn't be any need for anything but Linux boxes. And, indeed, video games are the only reason I have a Windows partition (which I never boot too except for games).

He included the shipping cost in the individual parts (and states this explicitly), although he also overestimated Dell's shipping by around a factor of three. Really, as previously stated here, you'll save about $30USD in terms of equipment building the system yourself. I agree that you can buy your own computer parts for cheaper, but when we're talking about such low-end systems the difference is marginal. This seems a pointless argument. Build your own computer if that's what suits you, or if you have custom needs the manufacturers don't take into account.

The event will be on Tuesday, January 23rd. It will be on the Portland campus, and will start in room 103 of the Science building (that's the building housing the Southworth Planetarium... somebody needs to be brutally killed for that web site). The event is being operated by the USM student chapter of the ACM (or the ACM@USM).

Information (and open discussion) on this event is now available on the ACM@USM website.

I've gotten a couple dozen emails from people offering their equipment and I'm currently sorting through them, but it looks like we definitely have a Commodore 64. Nobody has offered an Atari, and nobody I know is in possession of one, so I may have to hit eBay. As regards on IMSAI 8080, I'll do my best, although my suspicion is that I can't afford one.

Directions from the Southworth Planetarium website:
I-295 NORTH OR SOUTH: Take Exit 6B. Go west (straight) on Forest Avenue to the second light. Turn left onto Falmouth Street. The Planetarium is on the left in the Science Building on the USM campus. Parking: There is on-street parking on Falmouth Street. A special parking place for busses is now available next to the Science Building.

Thank you all for your input!
