What you're describing definitely needs to be taught for people in the area of software development/engineering. Computer Science, however, is an entirely different subject. Sadly, the vast majority of people studying Computer Science should not be. Computer Science is an academic discipline akin to physics or biology, and deals with theories and concepts more than development cycles and QA processes. That is the work real scientists leave to the engineer lackeys (no offence intended... [okay, maybe a little]).
I should add that I am definitely -not- a computer scientists, I am in the latter category of mere "developer" that works in the field. I am, however, an aspiring physicist and I think it still applies.
It sounds like your school's computer science needs some work if it's teaching you VB as a serious (eek!) language, but it is correct in not requiring a course specifically on software development practices. Perhaps the real problem here was stated in your first sentence: "small private college".:)
Maybe most women are just smart enough not to want to contribute to the nightmare that is Redhat, Fedora, etc. I certainly wouldn't, and I'm just a dumb guy. I dreaded every job that required me to administer Redhat machines, and usually was successful in convincing higher ups how much they could increase my productivity by switching to Debian. I only wish more people could see this, yet it seems may Redhat users are still unaware of the advantages. To them, dealing with dependencies is still just a way of life in Linux, which is absurd. I think women are usually more practical about such things and can see them as part of the larger picture.
I know I've actually used one of these "web OS's" before that must have been posted to slashdot a year or more ago, and I know I've seen it mentioned several other times. But it still gets back to the simple question for me: what is the point? I'm asking that seriously... What is the usefulness of this application? It's an alternative to thin-client solutions I suppose, sure, but still rather limited in what it can do (wouldn't a dummy X terminal need far less resources and CPU power than a modern "browser terminal"?). It would give enterprises even tighter control of whta their users can do--okay, I suppose that's good for them. Is that it? Please let me know what you think...

Um...and just WHY would anyone be interested in downloading any of this non-free garbage? Especially Sourceforge. That was one shameful decision. One shouldn't even consider using it over free projects like Savane, GForge, or as someone already mentioned, Trac.
This is Slashdot, after all, did we forget?
Okay, sorry, Last.fm is kind of free, but still they need to restore the ability to play an mp3 stream with the player of your choice, not just their clunky custom software.
Okay, okay, perhaps I'm a bit dense this morning. You really did a good job of sounding like an American!:-P Sorry I didn't catch the humour.
I really think it is okay to tell Americans that they are "wrong" though, and I do believe it is a moral issue. When you put so much effort into protecting what is yours for fear of actually supporting someone who has some hardship in their life simply because you are selfish and want everything for yourself, I feel very confident in saying that is wrong, and I do condemn Americans for it every day. The difference is that Americans won't change until they are forced to, by their empire crumbling or other economic hardships, whereas Europeans for the most part changed because they -chose- to, by actually figuring out what the right way to treat people is. I don't have nearly that much confidence in the American public to ever reach that level.
Thank you for very aptly describing EXACTLY why Sweden is so much better than the US and why any of us would be damn lucky to live there.
You have to have a warped mind to view what you wrote as "not taking sides," however. It's very clear that you don't respect people who care more about others than themselves and prefer the selfish American me-first way of thinking. That's fine if you wish to think that way (and have no morals), but don't try to claim you're not taking sides!
The Environment is the ONLY "winner" that matters.
Until this country (the US) and to a lesser degree the rest of the world realizes this simple concept, we will never solve this problem. Environmental protection must trump ALL other concerns from economics to convenience. This is non-negotiable, and governments must be used to enforce this as individuals (yes myself included) have proven repeatedly that they are too selfish and immature to do it on their own.
This is ridiculous. Norm Coleman is an isolationist control freak and he must be stopped. The U.S. government should have absolutely no role in governing the internet. The internet is a public, global medium--perhaps just the push we need to work toward some global unity. The continued influence of the U.S. on the internet is what is dangerous, wrong, and already leading to a considerable amount of censorship.
Norm Coleman never fails to entirely embarrass both the state of Minnesota and the entire United States of America (not that he needs much help with the latter). And his antics never fail to appear on Slashdot, either, further demonstrating Minnesotans' complete incompetence when it comes to electing political leaders. First we thought Jesse Ventura was as bad as it could get, but we were so wrong. I am surely ashamed to be a Minnesotan today, and cannot wait for the day when I can get an EU residency permit, but until then, I hope people will remember that Minnesota USED to be a decent place, a leader in fact of the shamefully small progressive movement in this country. We're not all bad, and if we work together, we can kick the scum that have invaded MN back to the south where they belong.
What self-respecting geek son or daughter would allow their parents to continue running IE (the only browser supported by this silly piece of software)? I simply teach them to type searches into Firefox's integrated search field. Very simple.
I see this topic has already been discussed to death here, however I believe this is the most important issue we face in our pseudo-democracy right now. My question is this:
Are you committed to working with other third parties, especially those on the other side like the Green Party and Communist Party, to push for voter reform legislation such as IRV/PR that would benefit all third parties?
It is clear to me that we must work together toward this goal--the Libertarians and Independence Party working to sway conservative/republican lawmakers, while the Green and Communist parties work to sway democrats. What will you do to help ensure this goal, and thus increase the voice your party has, in addition to other third parties in this country?
This is one of those things we all say to ourselves "they should do this," yet it never happens. I'm really glad to see this. I can't wait until I can start recommending clients to them and supporting them with large (yet still much cheaper than Verisign/Thawte!) donations.:)
I wouldn't think any server should be, but I was curious since the Kalyxo project is said to be hosting it once it's released... I sure hope it's not dependent upon kdelibs...
As the original post said, you can reconnect to disconnected sessions, which is nice. A VNC can't do that if the SSH tunnel is broken. I also currently launch VNC from inetd, and once that connection's broken, there's no way to re-connect to it. I'm definitely looking forward to checking out FreeNX!
Heh, you obviously don't understand the point of Free software. In general, having that product available as Free software will attract much more users than the few at that particular company that might go out of business. If they are -smart-, they will assist the open source development effort, and re-tailor their business to provide expert integration solutions of FreeNX, etc. It's all about -service- and developing code, not re-selling code over and over again without doing any work. That's the difference. They don't have to go out of business, just change their old business model.
I use Caps lock while I'm actually typing. Like if there's an acronym I just HIT IT and type whatever I need...I don't even think about it. It's just another key. I wouldn't want to be without it!!
Unfortunately, this only works if you pay for a $25 yearly subscription, AND it doesn't export comments as RSS. This is a huge problem that none of the blogging software really addresses, I feel.
I use LiveJournal much more as a communication/collaboration platform, where the links between people, comment authors, etc. are very important. But there's no standard way to maintain these across different sites, which is why we're all stuck on LiveJournal now. It seems like what we need is a kind of combination of RSS, Atom and FOAF that handles threaded conversations (e.g. a blog post + comments).
Include a NNTP gateway to use all the Usenet clients out there to post and I would be in heaven.:)
I really don't care if the company supports Linux, but so often these devices use such obscure proprietary hardware that there are none, or at best buggy drivers available for Linux. This really bothers me. I hope that the device will at least use some common components which will work well with Linux!
(Of course not having to pay for a Windows license is always nice, but no doubt a pipe dream.)
But most of the time, it's realistic fun.
My god, what the hell is wrong with you? When brutally murdering people is realistic you call that FUN?!? Just what we need--make killing other people as realistic and yet trivial as possible. People like you are why the U.S. is such a disgusting country!

Doesn't one of Gaim's lead developers work for Google, specifically with the goal of porting GTalk's voip capabilities to Gaim?

If it indeed uses SIP, then it will work (eventually), that's the whole point of an open standard.
This is one of those things we all say to ourselves "they should do this," yet it never happens. I'm really glad to see this. I can't wait until I can start recommending clients to them and supporting them with large (yet still much cheaper than Verisign/Thawte!) donations. :)

Uh, did you bother to disable JavaScript window resizing? It's always one of the first things I do on a new Mozilla install.
What about my favorite GUI of all time? Okay, my favorite was the DR-DOS SHELL ViewMAX, but still! All DOSSHELLs demand respect!
I don't buy it...if Booble doesn't have my XFree86 porn, then nobody does. :(

But most of the time, it's realistic fun.
