Sure, getting off the evil grid sounds great, but is it actually a good thing? All these batteries we're talking about have a huge environmental impact as well. They also will need to be replaced regularly. With a grid, electricity can be stored far more efficiently, and less of it can be stored at once to meet everyone's needs. I don't see how everyone having their own giant batteries is a desirable solution. The issue seems to be that the grids are still powered largely by coal and natural gas. Once we eliminate these and move to nuclear, thermal, hydro, and wind sources, using a grid will continue to be the ideal solution. Granted, having these grids and utilities controlled by private companies is completely unacceptable. That needs to change, but that's another matter entirely.
If I don't get my 8 hours in, I'm an absolute unproductive disaster at work the next day. How do a *majority* of US Americans survive with less than 7 hours of rest each night? I just don't understand it. I know a lot of people are addicted to coffee, which I can't stand personally, but can that really explain it? Or does my body just need more sleep than most people? (Not so, according to the CDC and loads of other studies.)
I think one of the biggest problems in our society is people getting started in their day far too early, as if we are still farmers or something. There's absolutely no reason for an office-type job to begin before 9 AM, for example. Work just isn't that important. People need their sleep. Imagine how productive we could be!

If you want encryption, you really need to just do it yourself. When you do, it doesn't make any difference which provider you use. I would use Gmail simply because they are so huge, the reliability shouldn't be an issue. It works with any standard IMAP client, and since your messages are encrypted, Google can't even scrape them to profile you. Also make sure you are using your own domain name, so that you can easily change providers should you ever wish to.
Netflix has already done more to fight piracy than anyone else in the industry. They have shown that the way to fight piracy is by providing a competitive product that is priced reasonably and makes consuming content incredibly easy and convenient. It's sad to see them going down this path instead of continuing to push forward where they have made such a huge impact in the past. The biggest hurdle to Netflix are they very content creators it is now partnering with—disgusting media production companies that try to restrict the distribution of their content *regionally*. The world is global, and until this comes to an end, piracy will reign supreme. Let's remember that Apple is legally obligated only to do things which are in the interest of its shareholders. This is not some altruistic act. I bet a good deal of the money they're borrowing will be spent on their own automated vehicle efforts (which, in theory, could *also* be good for the environment), improvements in data centre cooling efficiency, power savings, etc. I imagine the bulk of the benefit to shareholders is simply as a marketing ploy, to keep their customer base happy and coming back for more, tricking them into believing that Apple is a "good" corporation and shares their values.
