    Better ... patenting a faster method of scraping the USPTO database and comparing it against a frequently updated list of novel software products.

    the same for pharmaceuticals would be about a third of the amount of time spent developing a drug.
    Speaking of pharma stuff, did you knew that the industry probably spends more an advertising than on R&D [1] ?
    Perhaps they should be able to patent certain types of ads, too ?

    With statements like this, I sometimes wonder if all the stifling of innovation through hindrance of competition in economics is just part of a bigger plot to prevent the singularity from happening all too soon.

    As I recall, so-called "reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing" (RAND) makes use in free and open source software impossible.

    Also, some guy claims he prooved mathematically that software patents fail (disclaimer: i don't understand it) [1].

    I like the approach of actually going through and giving these anti-privacy people exactly what they're asking for.

    I did his at school. When I urged people to encrypt their communication, several said they had nothing to hide. So I started Wireshark and proceeded to read some of their more interesting instant messages to them and everyone who was interested.

    Kind of bothered some of them, but instead of learning crypto basics, they yelled at me. I do not understand this behaviour, can Slashdot explain ?

    knowledge of this can *only* have some impact if you tell everyone about it. just look WEP, better encryption is the way to go.

    based on anectodal evidence - seeing really dumb people use kde and gnome - i'd dispute that. just look at synaptic and then try telling me the windows way of installing stuff is easier. or compare the ever-nested windows "start" menu with the gnome "applications" menu, then guess which one may be easier to use (hint - it's especially frustrating to miss that 20px high box when you are 4 levels inside the nested menu structure).

    when i present ubuntu, i highlight the integration:
    - synaptic is a killer application, the dumbed down version is literally idiot proof
    - when i click on a file, if a suitable program isn't installed, i get a prompt if i want it
    - when i input a command and a suitable program isn't installed, i get instructions to install it

    combined with my subtle RDF, it works quite nicely ;)

    Relying on current application behaviour is not bad per se. It is bad not to reveal what the application does. Things like autoSpaceLikeWord95 are referenced but not specified. This is objectively bad. Just think of it: I give a new screw standards paper to the ISO. It simply says that the screw can easily be driven in with my old Bauhaus 95 screwdriver. However, the spec doesn't say what the dimensions of my screwdriver actually are. Do you think ISO should make this a standard ?

    Well at least Itunes runs on Linux, to- SHIT IT DOESN'T !

    There is a distinct difference: ODF doesn't "specify" AutoFormatLikeStarOffice5.2 or WrapLinesLikeStarWriter1.0.
    I suggest you read http://ooxmlisdefectivebydesign.blogspot.com/ and see for yourself if OOXML can be considered broken from an objective POV.
