It was actually the phenomenon of 'Shy Tories(1)'; people who told pollsters they were definitely voting Labour, but in the booth, they didn't. As to what they were thinking, maybe a better shot at personal gain under the Tories, and the rest of the country can sod right off? Or a protest vote against Milliband personally for being an abject failure at retail politics (along with that adenoidal voice)? Hell, maybe it was just the vague thrill of screwing up the predictions, knowing your own vote really would never change your life in any meaningful way.
The problem is, the music isn't the artist's property. The labels claim all the rights. The artists theoretical royalties invariably end up being a shit sandwich, without much bread. The labels signed the deal with Apple, because they know that the artists have signed away all their rights already.
I just don't get why there are still these middle men (always men) in this time where an artist can literally directly connect with their fans (more pointedly: patrons). Is it just about the bandwidth?
I doubt Apple wants to buy something that sends money to Microsoft, and they certainly won't back Google. And Apple doesn't have the expertise to build an effective search engine on their own.
Apple would contend that nothing outside of the beautiful walled garden of Apple.com is worth searching for in the first place.
When the 2nd amendment was drafted the hunting rifle in the hands of the average citizen was not especially inferior to that of the one in the hands of the local serif or for that matter the regular army soldier. Moreover the local serif and the soldier were no more able to defend themselves against said rifle than your average citizen was.
Something funny Sans Serif.
It's Friday, and I can't be asked to fill in the blanks for you.
And we assume that didn't stand for Winged Stratolounger Operator; that you actually were in harms' way, even just the risks of real takeoffs and landings, versus rush hour traffic. I think they're struggling quite a bit with The Bravery of Being Out of Range thing.
I've never understood who is *still* buying obviously stolen copper pipe and especially infrastructure-grade wire seemingly without repercussion. Seems like it would be pretty easy to sting the shit out of the buyers that are solely keeping this thieving viable.
Instead you will be sealed inside a metallic "bullet", that runs in a metallic tube - no windows for you (sort of like James Bond in The Living Daylights). It's a pity if you have any sort of claustrophobia.
On the other hand, whether a successful trip or not, it won't last long.
As others have pointed out, this hatchet job coming on the heels of the pathetically-accidental discovery of the massive FedGov personnel breach cannot be unrelated. An obvious attempt to divert blame from the stunning incompetence of multiple agencies by laying it at the feet of the evil totem Snowden. But obvious still seems to work on increasingly harried USians with little time left in their days to think critically and ask: who benefits?
Plus before long cell phones will replace your credit card, and when your "credit card" is a no longer a dumb piece of plastic but basically a super computer with tons advanced sensors in your pocket it opens up a whole new world.
"Assuming the attacker didn't get too much of your wife's blood into any of the ports when he took off her fingers."
The reason a more socialized approach works in Nordic countries (and a few other places as well) is sadly this: tribalism. These are societies where there is a good chance everyone is distantly related as going way, way back, everyone was part of the same *tribe*.
When your neighbor is down on his luck, you don't mind him being on the dole as you both probably share the same great ^x grandfather. But if your new neighbor is visually, obviously from 'somewhere else', that's when the tribalist (read:racist) resentments kick in. Because the US is so heterogeneous, those differences are always there to be exploited by the cynical puppets of the (99% white) power structure, to keep all the various tribes at each others' throats, instead of them all realizing and turning on their common enemy.
It still amazes me to see folks still operating (let alone being allowed to sell) drones without any shielding around the prop perimeters. Yes, yes; weight and efficiency, but I don't think the bystander damage would be nearly as great when *when* they fall out of the sky.
I've been on Slashdot since the 90s, and I can at least say that it's a somewhat sane place to discuss tech-related and nerd-related topics (other than the typical political/religious commentary nonsense).
The criminals came to the attention of police after repeatedly initiating man-in-the-middle attacks against European companies, using intrusions and social engineering to route corporate payments to their own bank accounts.
Corporate lucre being stolen? Break out the task force! Consumers being hacked? Go fuck yourselves.
As a Californian, I am ashamed to say, she is my senator.
Yeah, but WHY IS THAT STILL TRUE? Does Orange County and San Diego truly control the entire state? I guess so, given that if this state was even half as progressive as they like portray themselves, by now, no one would even remember her.
People do lose opportunities and jobs when they are employed at making things that can be made more cheaply elsewhere, but they gain jobs when they are employed at making things that can be made more cheaply here.
Absolute bullshit. Yes, a few lucky survivors of the tsunami might make it thru your euphemistic 'rising tide', but in the aggregate, there will be (hell, are already) fewer and fewer living wage jobs left (this is intentional, as it will drive wages down, eagerly taken by people nearly driven mad by desperation). What the craven MBA crowd always forget is that well-paid workers are also their customers, FFS.
So to just so lightly breeze over the rotten core of this travesty makes you either a liar or an economist (but I repeat myself).
Self-Driving cars to further enhance continuous surveillance by the Corporate State.
Even if you do let it drive you to the bar or liquor store and back, your health insurance premiums just went up in real time (doubly so if you hit a fast food drive thru).
There's no doubt in my mind that on 9/11, Rove and Cheney danced a joyous jig when they realized the tragedy could be exploited to justify Endless War (TM) and the Surveillance State for both political and (far more importantly) financial gain.
Related: why do so many Americans still hate Edward Snowden? Because he took away their precious fantasy about 'That Shining City on the Hill' being a source and protector of all things good and just.

Anyone else vaguely reminded by this telescope battle of Arthur C. Clarkes' The Fountains of Paradise?
