Research patents are turning our school into corporations and the top 5 school are now completely dominant in terms of receiving grants (MIT, Harvard, and a few others).
So let's see... so far we've got the American free market blah blah blah and global warming. Any other Slashdot whipping boys we've left out? I'm sure we could find a way to blame Microsoft and Diebold if we really tried!
If this were the US people would be complaining that it was initiated so the evil Republicans could steal elections. But instead, Estonia is viewed as a forward-thinking society.
Total population density does miss one important fact, US urban living arrangements tend to be far more decentralized (farther away from downtown) than nearly every other nation on earth regardless of population density. There was a good article I read about how the richest residents of Silicon Valley have the hardest time getting broadband due to them being located out in the "exurbs".
One of the Slashdot "big three articles" ("election stolen", "US broadband", and "what Bush did").
It misses out on one point, the existing instance of internet penetration was previously high which lessens the incentive to move to Broadband for many people.... not to mention that even if some countries might have a lower population per square mile, the US has some of the most decentralized urban patterns on earth.
Heh, I knew someone would mention terrorism. Slashdot is so predictable sometimes (all the time).
Anyway, terrorists have actually killed us, yet these alarmist claims haven't really occurred yet. But I dissent from the alarmism on the right too... it's similar to eco-nut alarmism.
Maybe because Democrats are more prone to hysteria? "Republicans" have been dealing with alarmist claims since the 70's and are pretty used to it by now.
Well maybe "Republicans" (not all GW skeptics are "republicans") are simply unsure if GW is happening and making drastic changes and sacrificing certain liberties to prevent something that may or may not happen in 100 years or whatever.
So let's see, they tax money that you worked hard to earn... but crap that just falls into your lap because of pure luck is hands-off to the government. That makes sense.
This place loves taxes! This is a dream come true! The nimrods who post here should be overjoyed. This money can go to pay for tech education for "disadvantaged people" or maybe it can be used to advance the US's spot on the "broadband access" list.
Of course, if we had no roads, we'd have no cars, and thusly less pollution.;)

Exactly. I remember seeing poll results in Ohio... nearly all showed Bush just a little bit ahead of him. So while I agree that the way these machines are implemented is flawed and possibly they aren't a good idea at all, the election wasn't stolen. Still claiming to believe this, even after the same machines produced a huge coup against the Republicans in 2006 that will probably see them out of power for quite some time... as well as put their "enemies" in charge who would be likely to investigate 2004 election fraud... is kooky as hell. You look like loons basically (which you are, let's be honest).
What does this question have to do with "News for Nerds"? Anyway, apparently income inequality doesn't matter, as we have massive amounts of people literally dying to come to the US and there hasn't been a mass movement to "remedy" the situation.
You think this is a good technical website? They have the occasional good article (which is why I'm here). Of course I have to filter idiots like "kdawson".
C'mon, first off Slashdot is a very partisan website... anyone with any intelligence and perception whatsoever will realize this. But the article author mentioned this guy was Republican for one reason only, to score partisan points. Every article posted is slanted, biased, and an utter joke. And don't get me started on that idiot kdawson.
What exactly is the Broadband problem? You mean the hysterical stories spun here on Slashdot every 3 days or so?
people shouldn't vote for these fools.

Nobody else said so I figured I would. ;)

What, you think Slashdot gives more than lip service to "freedom"?
As well as internet radio, Ipods/MP3 players, etc.

Errr... isn't it already in the hands of business? It seems to have grown fine as it is.

Obligatory post here.

Geothermal... there's enough heat in the center of the earth to power any and all of man's needs for an indefinite period.

BTW, Freerepublic banned me.
Like 90% of all Slashdot "memes" it's not funny... like "we welcome our masters", "soviet russia", etc.

Why is Slashdot becoming involved in all this petty partisan tit for tat stuff? They are in danger of losing their already questionable reputation.
