"The free market already fixed this problem, if you don't like your provider, you're free to chose another. That's what makes capitalism and America great."
Wrong. There is no other provider. In many places the only provider is the landline Telco and they have a monopoly. There is no cellphone, cable, WiFi or other provider here.
It is highly regulated. In theory I could just setup my own link to a connection about 20 miles away to get around the Telco, I looked into it, but the government regulations are onerous.
I'm in Rural Vermont - a third world nation compared with the United States or Australia - and we already have metered pricing for the simple reason that the bandwidth is so low. For $125/month we get an absolute maximum of 6GB of data. That's 5x times more expensive than the Iowa pricing. Sounds like Australia is worlds ahead in internet infrastructure. I would love to have that but wouldn't want the urban problems.:) (Vermont is extremely rural - very low population density and no cities.)
We already effectively have metered pricing. We pay $125/month for 1.5Mbps. We only get about 90% uptime. If we were to use that at absolute maximum date throughput (impossible) we would get 6GB per month of usage. In reality we only use a small portion of that. So we're paying 5x as much as the plan they're proposing. This is the reality of rural aDSL.
That's going to hurt Amazon. UPS and FedEx alert me when packages are shipped to me...If I know they're doing this I can use it to get the best price, better than even they would give me. Once they've shipped it they need to start dropping the price fast so I don't refuse it.
They have been running out of ways to improve Photoshop. Once they realized this, they switched to a subscription only business model. Now they can roll out meager "upgrades" in drips and drabs without the pressure of having to create a whole new version of the software.
Exactly. Which is why I stopped upgrading years ago. Now we have the problem that Apple has made it so that they're not supporting legacy software. This makes it so I can't run older software on the newer MacOS X which means I can't buy new Mac hardware. This means I keep using the same old hardware. It still works. It still does what it did before. And when my $5,000 hardware finally broke down I was able to replace it with a used one for $350 off of eBay. That saved a pretty penny.
Adobe, and Apple, are being very short sighted. They've killed their market. I'm no longer sending them my money.
I'm just finishing up building a small super massive super insulated. It is concrete. No adding wires later as I want everything hidden away for easy cleaning because this is to be a USDA inspected meat processing facility. Sanitation and clean-ability are key.
My solution is conduit. Our walls, floors and ceilings are packed with conduit for everything I intend to install and a lot of extra conduit for maybes.
Nope. If you want the citation look it up yourself. This is the year 2014, dude. You have the Internet at your finger tips. You should know how to Google. If you don't then ask your parents to teach you.
Documented in the Amazon and many other fresh water bodies long ago with the Dragon Fish a.k.a. Arowana which jump out of the water to catch insects, birds and bats.
We need legacy support. It is only greed and laziness that prevents this. With graceful fall back Apple could keep supporting old hardware back to the last century. More importantly I want support for old software into the new operating systems so we can continue to access our data.
Lots of research shows that Macs are more productive, last longer and kick PC ass when it comes to cost benefit ratios. PCs are merely cheaper up front.
Once you've salved all the other questions change the premiss. Instead of answering how to cure cancer just eliminate cancer and start afresh with a brand new body to house the memories of the personality.
In time, decades, centuries, you'll wear out this body. Build a new one and transfer into that one.
Each time you transfer take some time to weed out the chaff from your mind, your personality, get some more education, go into the new body a better person.
Store the data digitally and you can keep doing this with better and better genetics each time.
He's thinking about it all backwards. The person is not the left hand or the right hand. Not the feet, not the legs. You aren't your earlobe or your eye. Replace all the cells, everything, with new, better programmed, cells. Transfer the person into the new body. Bingo - cancer is cured.
Bravo General Mills and thank you for making my favorite breakfast cereal without GMOs. The market place works. Consumer demand is a far better way to set things than regulations. All we're asking for as consumers is to know what's there so we can make decisions. It worked. Bravo to the free market and capitalism.

Oh, and one other detail: there is no competition here. The only ISP is the phone company.

There is a simple solution to web sites that annoy me with too much advertising, blocking my adblockers, forcing scripting, plugins etc...
I just stop going there.
No customers and they lose big time. There are alternatives to virtually everything. If advertisers make themselves too annoying they'll go extinct.

give your crescent wrench huge tatas.
Typo. I'm sure you meant, "Cresent wench".
3D printing. Good.
Cloud. Bad.
Subscription. Bad.
Adobe loses 2 out 3.

See: http://sugarmtnfarm.com/butchershop and go to the various pages about construction to see photos of construction.
So they were vegans and missed out on the good stuff that helped our ancestors. Extinction happens. Be a winner. Eat meat.

Buy your own Domain. It's ~$10/yr.
Setup a web server. It's free to $10/yr or so.
Have total control. Works.
If you want data, read the news or Google. What's wrong with your fingers?

Right...
"We do not track our customers in their cars without their approval or consent."
Right... And I have a nice bridge to sell you in the Everglades swamps...
Because some people can't upgrade to the latest and greatest for a variety of reasons. Tone down your arrogance - its messing up your nose hair.

Immortality awaits. Cancer is a mere annoyance.

The worst of both worlds. Glasses and contact lenses. Ugh. Shall we wear a face shield too? Ear protectors? Moon suit?

You are probably right so let's enjoy our right to lie while we can. Let lying dogs sleep. :)
