  1. Re:Could be DRM related on Playing Music Slows Vista Network Performance? · · Score: 0, Troll

So what happens if you play back an audio file purchased (errrm, sorry, licensed) through one of the officially-approved Microsoft music stores? I'm pretty sure there is a routine built in to Vista for that very scenario.. It fires up outlook, downloads a worm, turns the machine into a zombie, and finally spams your credit card info to everyone in your contact list. come to think of it, that's actually the routine response to any user input.
  2. Re:Darned whippersnappers on Does Going Digital Mean Missing Music? · · Score: 1

Face it, you've fallen victim to the most tired, played-out cliche ever - absolutely every generation believes as teenagers that they're listening to the best music ever, and when they're old, they declare current music is "crap", and it happened in the 1920's, in the 1950's, and you get the idea.

I disagree. I will admit that there is a spot in my heart for grunge music that was certainly acquired in my teenage years, however I also am in love with almost all genre of music. There's music from literally every decade that I listen to on a regular basis and really enjoy. Really the only thing I won't listen to is whatever is played on MTV/radio. It just goes to show that music really is getting bad, especially when it has to be force fed to you on a platter of titties. If the half naked women on MTV can't arouse my *erm* passion for modern pop music, I doubt anything can.

My thoughts on the original article are this: Record producers are 'losing the magic' as it were. They see the music production sliding away from them because of formats like mp3 that allow easy sharing of music, and they see the ridiculously low cost of producing pro quality music at home and it's scary for them. Naturally they want to cook up some FUD in their favor, so they say mp3 is killing music. The fact of the matter is, the compression of mp3 takes away very little in the way of nuance. There are a few times I've heard a cut on mp3 and though "oh man, this thing got mangled in compression." but that's a rarity. Just look at Ledbelly.. Virtually every recording of the man is of a quality slightly less than your average corded telephone. But his recordings remain an incredibly influential and inspirational legacy for modern musicians.

Good music is good music. That's really all it comes down to. Good music finds a way. Good music can't die because it's not measured in record sales or chart ratings. It's simply an honest expression of a true musician. The sky is not falling, record producers; it's only your roof that's falling. Compression does not ruin the music, especially when the music sucked in the first place. Besides, anyone who cares uses FLAC anyway, so the whole argument's moot in the first damn place.

The local yokels have never seen a dodge delivery van? That's kind of an odd little anecdote.

Anyway, I too, have never seen an HD-DVD or BluRay player in anyone's house. Actually, I have never seen a PS3, either. I've seen a plethora of really large, flat televisions hooked up to xbox 360's, some of which were acquired at great expense. I think this is testament to how superfluous the movie industry really is. College kids are willing to go through great lengths to get a huge screen and a console solely for Gears of War, but are unwilling to spend any amount of money to watch high-def movies at home.

The greatest movies ever made weren't filmed in HD, nor would it enhance the movie in the least.. Movies are about storytelling, not CGI. Would you buy "Clerks" in high def? What about the countless other movies that are awesome because of things like dialog and plot? HD-DVD and BlueRay were conjured up to help sell the new breed of pretty shit the movie industry is trying to ram down our throats. Sure, the new Die Hard flick was pretty fun and had a bunch of really neat explosions, but I for one could not suspend my disbelief. That movie, to me, basically said "Americans do not understand the simplest of physics concepts, and they think the internet and utilities work on magic."

No sir, I'm not willing to shell out buku dollars on what is essentially a non-interactive video game.

If you want to put out a fire, you throw the water on the base, not the flames. I think maybe going after the pornographers and warez groups would have a much greater effect than simply inconveniencing them by taking away one of many distribution channels. It seems to me that this whole business is just smoke and mirrors. Stunts like this are more for the general public than those trafficking in illegal bytes. I've got dozens of albums out in the wild that are available only in torrent form. It's sort of a social experiment. I used to put a lot of time and effort into maintaining separate web sites for each of the 5 projects. I've long since given up paying money to give stuff away for free, so I just uploaded the torrents to a bunch of trackers and always seed them. Interestingly enough, I seem to get quite a bit more exposure from this method than I did from a pretty website and heavy shameless self-promotion.

Personally, I could care less if people listen to my music. Like I said, I don't make a dime off of it, so it's no skin off my back. But it will be interesting to see if this Swedish police nonsense has an impact.

I mean, after all, everyone knows torrents are only used for illegal activities like pirating software and spreading kiddy pr0n. Well, that and linux distro .iso's but those should be illegal anyway. Damn hippies and their free shit.

Question: what does DRM do to mp3s? This is a serious question, as I've never come across any music in any format that I haven't been able to anything I've wanted with. I've burned cd's, transfered music to many different brands/types of portable music player, and I've dealt with files obtained from almost every source available. I think the only instance DRMed mp3s have given me any bit of grief was when i tried to burn a cd using WMP, and it returned some error along the lines of "these files are not authorized to burn to cd." I ended up using winamp to burn the cd with no errors on the first try. I've even used some freeware app to convert large batches of files to different formats, and I'm positive some of the files came directly from iTunes and were DRM-encumbered. I'm just curious if anyone has actually run into a case where DRM worked to the advantage of the content providers, because I've always assumed (and have had no reason to assume otherwise) that DRM does absolutely nothing at all in the real world.
