If you think Linux is pretty good, why not use it? For gaming you can switch to windows... That's what I do, it's not that hard to set up a dual boot on your system.
It's very simple, people are afraid of change! Especially with that which they don't fully understand.
Most people don't know how their computer works, it just does. If they click a button it does something. The moment it does something else they panic! Change the way the button looks and they won't click it anymore, because it can't possibly do the same thing as before: it looks different.
I notice this every day with people who have used a computer for many years every single day. I've been trying to get some to switch to Linux, but most people just freeze up completely. They can't accomplish even the simplest of tasks because it looks a little different. It's like because they have new shoes on, they have forgotten how to walk...
The current generation of these kind of users are lost to windows forever, it's the new generation(s) that other OS's must aim for.
... and the alternative is watching a PC screen showing video you got from a network of tubes?
Where exactly did I say that I do this? None of today's methods in delivering media to the user really appeal to me:
- TV: It's free, but it doesn't allow me to watch what I want, when I want. And also the fact that I am constantly being told to buy product A, subscribe to product B,... completely puts me off!
- Download (paid): So basically DRM, no thank you...
- Download (free): The quality of the media just isn't worth the trouble in finding/downloading/running it.
- Store: Unfortunately going to a store and buying the physical thing is still the best option (if they didn't put their nasty DRM on it as well), considering the technology that is around this is a huge shame. But I just don't like the way that technology is being used today, it's all about limiting the user!
So as you might have guessed, I have escaped from my prison that is called the couch in front of the tv... And I can tell you, it's still pretty safe to go outside! Unlike what they try to tell you on the tv!
I am through with being told what to like, what to listen to, what to watch, what to eat,... I will decide that for myself, and if it means I can't take part in the extremely interesting discussion around the coffee machine on what happened in last nights episode of big brother, well then: so be it...
I believe people have gotten stuck in front of their television, it's like being fed through a tube... There are so much more entertaining things to do then to watch tv!
TV is an outdated concept... I hardly watch any television anymore myself, why would I want to watch something on a specified date and time? I'll watch it whenever I feel like it!
Record it from TV? Oh yea, I'm gonna wait until some station decides to air it and then record it with advertising...
There is nothing which interests me on television anyway which I can't find somewhere else. And the rest? Game shows, reality shows,... I couldn't care less about them!
With these kind of restrictions it seems like television stations are going the **AA way... Desperately trying to hold on to an outdated concept, which has made them alot of money in the past. Too blind and stuck in their old patterns to find new ways of making money...
I don't believe the future is user-generated content. Sure it is a nice option to include with a game and many people enjoy it and some good content will come from it. And it is a nice way for people who aspire game development jobs to get started and have something to show on their CV.
However, I believe the future lies with computer generated content. What if the computer could generate a new map for you? A new story-line?...
I think that game developers should focus their energy in developing methods of generating all sorts of game related content. It'll take many years before content can be generated which can be compared to human-generated content but I think it will be worth the effort!
It seems like Ubuntu is gaining alot of momentum in different areas right now. I hope they can make all/alot/some of the objectives they set for themselves real.
Especially the fact that larger hardware/software companies are willing to work together with them (the Dell deal, now Intel with this chip) looks like a big step in the right direction! What's good for one distro is good for every distro as far as I'm concerned. If Ubuntu becomes more mainstream perhaps we'll finally be able to get some good drivers for our hardware and such!
All the different tld's like.com,.net,.org,... are anyway all registered under the same name by the same person. And if they are not, it just causes confusion or it is used for fooling people.
country-based tld's are only there because of nationalism, every country wanted one...
Now-a-days tld's are nothing more than just a way to make money, hence adding new tld's like.tv and.eu which serve no real purpose whatsoever except for getting everyone to register their domain name before someone else does. Which ofcourse results in... Profit!
I don't think the impact would be that big for Microsoft. Sure there will probably be a momentary drop of Microsoft stock value, but that won't last long because Microsoft will ensure investors Bill wasn't really that important to the company. Which is true, a large company like microsoft doesn't depend on just one person, everyone is expendable! Even Bill...
I'm more worried about what would happen to commercialized space travel if such an event would occur. I think it could set back the entire idea by a hundred years as it would invoke fear into people...
The principal seems to be such a nice guy! *rolls eyes*
He was probably just pissed because someone managed to create a page about him on myspace, while he had been desperately trying to do the same but couldn't fit his ego onto the page...
Personally, I play WoW on a separate windows machine which doesn't have any important and/or personal information stored on it. I only use it for playing games and such. I am pretty sure that Blizzard's Warden is not the worst privacy invading application on there, but because I know this I don't use it for anything important!
I also have a separate box which runs linux on which I keep my important and/or personal information, which can't be accessed except by me. And I don't use that machine for anything else, so I keep the risk at a minimum.
In fact, if Blizzard can ban cheaters from the game by using Warden, well... Hurray! If they start using it to collect important and personal information from the machine they won't find any on mine 'cause it's simply not there.
The bottom line, don't rely on others to respect your privacy and such, make sure you protect it yourself!
At my previous job I was also using 2 monitors, which definitely made me more productive as I could more easily compare information on different screens.
At my current job I only have 1 monitor and it took me a while to get used to it again. I would ask for a second screen but I already know the answer... "No, because otherwise everyone would want a second screen."
While on my departement, everyone would be better of with having a second screen, the average amount of windows open at the same time is at least 10. It would definitely increase productivity but explaining this to management who at most have their e-mail and text processor open is a lost cause I fear. Well, at least at home I have 2 screens to enjoy.
Also, on a related note, I found synergy to be an amazing tool when using multiple computers at the same time. It allows you to share the same mouse and keyboard between multiple computers by sending the signal over the network and it behaves just as if you had multiple screens on 1 computer (move between screens by going to the side of the screen). I haven't used it for a while though because I didn't have to work on multiple computers at the same time. But if you are, definitely check it out!
From the discussions going on I get the feeling that alot of people don't know what the human rights are, so here they are (taken from wikipedia):
- security rights that protect people against crimes such as murder, massacre, torture and rape
- liberty rights that protect freedoms in areas such as belief and religion, association, assembling and movement
- political rights that protect the liberty to participate in politics by expressing themselves, protesting, participating in a republic
-due process rights that protect against abuses of the legal system such as imprisonment without trial, secret trials and excessive punishments
- equality rights that guarantee equal citizenship, equality before the law and nondiscrimination
- welfare rights (also known as economic rights) that require the provision of education and protections against severe poverty and starvation
- group rights that provide protection for groups against ethnic genocide and for the ownership by countries of their national territories and resources
Please explain to me how these apply to animals? What we need is animal rights, a set of rules which apply to animals specifically.
If you see someone talking to their PSP, it could be that they don't have severe mental problems...

Hmmm, you're right...
Besides, reading slashdot while driving maybe isn't such a good idea afterall...
An e-paper with a wireless connection (with widespread wireless connectivity) and a web browser.
I could read slashdot on the way to work!

imho all tld's are pointless. Simeply going to http://slashdot/ or http://games.nintendo/ would be much simpler.
.com, .net, .org, ... are anyway all registered under the same name by the same person. And if they are not, it just causes confusion or it is used for fooling people.

Who needs to be able to search the web for research purposes or to lean how to code
Exactly! You could only use the knowledge you would gain for evil purposes anyway, like creating myspace.com!
You're comparing rape to a myspace prank page? I think that when you are raped a little more than just your ego is bruised...
The principal seems to be such a nice guy! *rolls eyes*

There will always be idiots, who will fill in their credit card information at visa.safe.ru!

That's not an easter egg... Easter eggs are supposed to be hard to find!
That would render the wow economy useless... You would only be able to buy from npc's and not from other players.
Researchers found 34 bone fragments belonging to a single individual at the Tianyuan Cave, near Beijing.
If he's living in a cave, he can't be very "modern"...
Errr, yes... That is what is meant!
political rights that protect the liberty to participate in politics by expressing themselves, protesting, participating in a republic
This means you as a human being have the right to vote!
liberty rights that protect freedoms in areas such as belief and religion, association, assembling and movement

My thoughts exactly, it's "human rights" not "primate rights"...
What's next? Chimps should be given the right to vote? Chimps can drive cars?
I am pro animal protection and all but this is just ridiculous...
