I am a true blue MYSQLer... Hated the mention of anything MYSQL.. believed the party-line that PostgreSQL was "old school" and not commercial grade.
However... due to Sun's recent actions (and your link:) ).. I just did the 60s tour of the docs.. not only did I find things in order like MySQL documentation.. but
HOLY COW.. the extra data types are what I've been dreaming of coding inot MySQL!!! Arrays???... Geometric data points (I work a lot with stored polygon data.. had been hand coding/uncoding it)...
WOW.. I think I just switched parties!!
Thanks SUN! (for making me look else where!)...
And thanks poet for you simple link!
Agreed! I loved that line as well. I've been spreading that all over work today! (Who say's the news is always depressing!)
This makes me think.. we should start an internet award that can be given each year to the best "little guy" that stands up to the giant (even if they didn't win).
I nominate Kurt Denke!
Or.. its how the gmail anit-smap system tries to find and filter out spam / virus links by tasting what links are sent to gmail recipients and looking for known exploits / spam / etc.
Sorry if that was tin-foil-hatted enough:)
If your logic was true.. then they would stop using DNA evidence. It has been proven (many times over) that two people can have the exact same DNA (see Identical twins)... However we continue to use DNA to convict people all the time.
"used as evidence" just means the court accepts the conclusions implied by the facts being tried. I don't recall hearing a real case on TV (court TV.. not Law & Order).. where they said "This fingerprint could only be maid by Mr. X".. instead they say "There is a 1 in 10^17 chance that this 107 point point of the fingerprint.. came from someone other than Mr. X".. In most cases all evidence includes a likelihood of failure.
I say we setup a dictionary based query that (slowly as to not DNS).. generates a mountian of plausible but not needed DNS queries. The domain squatters would then spend $$$ grabbing what amounts to useless domains..
Use the old scale of economy attack on them. It they have to sit on 10,000 useless names to hit one "real" one.. it becomes a LOT less profitable.. and they will move on.
As a Verizon FIOS Customer who very recently upgraded to FIOS. I can say I was told three times that the old line would be "disabled" and that once the conversion to FIOS was complete the old copper wouldn't work anymore.
Talking with the technician who did the install.. the big motivation (from his point of view) was getting off the old / aging copper including the DC loading systems that add (according to him) a big demand on maintenance and space in the central office.
Obviously if they jack the rates up really high.. I would need to switch to Cable (currently and 6Mbps down).
As for the "Destruction of the last mile).. all that they are doing is removing the jumper inside your local box (where your house wiring connects to their wiring). The wire under the ground is still there.. and I doubt their going to go removing what's been laid.
Also remember that if they get too greedy.. then the local PUCs that regulate their fees / requirements will be pressured to enforce more customer friendly options.
With the fiber to the home.. your more likely to see pricing pressure / new service options from them.
As internet becomes considered "required infrastructure" to the masses.. I expect more.. not less regulation over it.
Graphing calculators are **WAY** over-rated... what you really need is nice slide ruler!
Remember.. nothing goes better with a slide ruler.. than a nice pocket protector to put it in!
(Ok.. I can now get my former boss of my back... He was always pushing slide rulers on the other engineers).
Come on.. we all knew the world was going to burn up!
We know if movie prophecy! The Planet of the apes teaches us that the world would end in a giant fireball, started by man to finally rid the world of "those filthy apes!"
Which is actually quite funny.. because one of Gentoo's big things.. is compiling everything on your system.. with full optimizations for what you have. If you look at this posting in my blog, http://ps3penguins.blogspot.com/2007/01/gentoo-lin ux-on-ps3.html you can find several links relating to this.. key is the planet.gentoo link that talks about pre-compiled PS3 binaries.
I fear this may be true. I didn't realize Sony crippled it in this way until after my posting.. but there is still hope. I know there is active development at where I work for cell blade processors.. and they are seeing 78x improvement with the first simple port (estimates after optimization are MUCH higher..:) ) but real measured gain is still very nice. As the cell becomes a more "real" platform.. I am hoping Sony will see a desire to increase volume sales by offering it as a "cheap" development platform (yes ram is limited)... but if you porting small apps that do high CPU.. like an MPEG decoder... than it would do just fine.
Time will tell.
Not scalped... local pickup (nothing at the $600 range in my area yet... been checking around). Probably pick one up in April after taxes... gotta put the old (and soon to disappear) tax refund to work:)
Built in HDTV output, digital audio, small nice looking box, DVD...
It has a lot of nice options +++ I get to use it as a game machine too.
MythTV is cool on old hardware if you are doing older standard def content.. I am doing DigitalTV recordings (straight off the air in the new HDTV ATSC format).. so I need a front end with enough horse power to seamlessly decode HDTV content.
I am drooling at the opportunity to get a PS3 (at a reasonable price... ) and get MythTV going on it!
Ok.... but if you have any good / bad experiences on compiling MythTV than please post them on either

I wanna see real IPTV from the PS3 before the XBox 360 guys beat us to it!

Is there a Freudian slip there? ... or just bad typing?
