really now, If I were a less secure person I would probably take offense to being called a 'Ignorant MS-using sysadmin'. As it is, I happen to be an MCSE who sysadmins roughly 300 NT servers in a network with over 20,000 nodes and almost 40,000 users. I use Linux for lots of network-odd-jobs, and NT and Unix/can/ integrate, with some work. Im sure once I start playing with Win2k, it'll integrate too. If anything, using DNS lookups for name resolution, intead of WINS should make cross-platform stuff a little easier.
My oldest son is at least as 'different' as I am, and I feel strongly that he does not belong in any school system. My wife and I are strongly commited to home-schooling him, he is six now and will not be starting first grade in the fall. He is already well ahead of what the the curriculum would have him doing now.
Last time I looked at switch specs the backplanes were running at over 6Gigbits/second, and that was maybe a year ago. 6Gbps/2k nodes = 3 Mbps/node. Can beowulf work with that? Of course it would be more complicated than that, you probably cannot get 2000 switched interfaces on one backplane, so you would need multiple switches, probably connected by Gigabit ethernet. Boxes on the same switch could communicate much faster that 3Mbps, off the switch would be much slower. Does beowulf have some way to control machine 'affinity'?
Linux is free, and obeys rules that are different than those that apply to commercial software (like Solaris or os/2.) Linux can creep through holes, seep in under doors. My company doesn't have any position on Linux, no policy. If they ever ask about it, though, they will find it everywhere: When network engineering needed a DNS server, and couldn't wait for the usual purchasing delays, up went a Linux box.
I had an extra old PC, and wanted beter network utilities than windows 95 (telnet, whois, nslookup) so now I have Linux on my desktop.
Researchers here have been using Unix for a long time, and Linux is just another tool they can use for statistical analysis, image processing and networking.
I think that many managers will find the same thing. Linux has crept in beetween the cracks into many organizations.
To him calling my $100 mini-tweeter/subwoofer combo 'tinny pc speakers' MP3s sound *great* on them, most of the 128Kbps ones sound as good as CDs. 320s are pretty much perfect.
I can build an AMD based system for a signifigant amount less, though. Its hard to justify the extra price because 'its really cute' My kids are 5, 3, and.2, I really wish someone was writing pre-school software for Linux... I don't think they're ready for Quake 8]
Thos Imacs are *sooo* cute, I want one, even understanding the terrible price/performance ratio. I'd love to be able to set up a one-piece PC for my kids in their bedroom, something like an Imac that doesnt take up much space.
I cannot really express my anger, frustration and disappointment that someone would stoop this low.
This is *humor* funny.... you know, ha-ha?
like my wife said, eveyrone is free to make fun of the president, politicians, etc, but God forbid they poke fun at MicroSloth (or other corp with expensive lawyers.)
I am his friend from work:) I met my wife 8 years ago on the online service Delphi. Delphi was not the 'net, though. It was started in Boston, and most of the people chatting there were local to the Boston area. We would get together for barbecues, parties, etc. all the time, so meeting face-to-face was not quite the leap for us that it is for IRC chatters today. You would generally know at least a few people who had met the person you were going to meet already.
I flew to the city where my future wife lived at that time, and we met at the airport. I suppose it was naive of us, but I don't think either of us had any reservations about meeting in person. It was obvious to both of us that our relationship was increasingly romantic, but we certainly weren't sex starved libido addicts. Without the net we certainly would not have met, but beyond that were differences in age and family background. The network allowed us to form a relationship based on our selves, which trancended our differences.
I realize that the 'net now is different from Delphi then. Widening access is changing the landscape on-line. Everyone needs to be aware of the risks involved, but I am sad for the loss of naivete and innocence . Without the openness and sense of community of the time I would be without the love of my life. I regret that anyone might miss out on the chance I had because of the actions of people like the sexual predator in this story.

This is the best JK article I've seen yet.

I hope I can spare my son the pain I endured.

They specifically listed the processes running.
X, XF86_WHATEVER, WindowMaker etc, wasn't on the list.

Not terrible, but its hard to justify $1200 for the *sixth* PC in the house.
and soon to be joined by a sun 3/80, too.

I forgot about the date thing.
ah well, even if it is a joke, Its a little to close to home.

Run blipverst in the lower right corner of the screen and use skin 'trodes to collect the electric potential released.
keep up from blowing up too.
people do just spontaneously... blow up sometimes, it does happen.
If only the man hadn't made them take segfault down
