All you have to do is use the command prompt instead of clicking the icon. The os check switch is /a, so you could type in the run prompt:

    D:/setup.exe /a

And XP only games will install on 2000 no problem. I have a few MS XP only games on my 2000 machine. Pinnacle Pro also worked this way, can't say I've had any other apps argue with me over it.

I use windows 2000 for all my 3D models and texturing. I game on it as well and I can tell you that it almost never crashes as long as I don't install a slew of freeware or trialware. If stability is paramount to price, I would go with windows 2000. You really need to lock it down because the "out of the box" install options for networking are simply retarded. Remote registry service on by default? Jesus.

At the school where I teach we use XP. It constantly crashes, even with the stablest of apps like photoshop. Granted, a lab for 600 students will be harder to maintain than a personal pc. Default install does not automatically start RRS.

Interestingly, the OS check for most applications or games I own that require Windows XP can be easily overrided by using the command line to skip the OS check. "(Drive letter or path): setup /a" is all you need to do. even MS games the "require XP" work just fine. Drivers, patches, updates, applications... it works for all of them so far.

XP is probably better if you have a 64 bit processor, but otherwise I don't see what advantages it would have. I've heard you can get an extra 5-7 FPS in some games out of it... I guess that's something. They aren't releasing Service Packs for 2000 anymore, that is likely something else. Last I heard they are discontinuing them for XP too soon anyway...

Adobe software is pocket change compared to 3D software, and there is no bigger company than Autodesk for that. When I went to school the subject of biology and the origin of man didn't even come up until 8th grade. I remember the day my teacher Mr. Elliot told us a disclaimer that if you were highly religious you could be excused from the class about evolution, and he proved the concept if a few days with a petri dish and a weak antibiotic. After the weak bacteria died, only resistant strains were left and subsequent uses of the antibiotic were ineffective. He explained how this worked long term with more advanced organisms over a longer period of time and we went on our way. Heck I don't even remember talking about history until 3rd grade. Strange pre-school, kindergarten, or elementary school that she is attending. I wonder if it is a state school or not. We never talked about religion, but this was in a public school in suburban Philly.

Of course they are batshit crazy but that is beside the point. As far as money being spent on the aquisition of religious artifacts, well, that has been going on since time immemorial and will never stop. American or otherwise, deep down people want some sort of proof and finding an ark would certainly be that proof. (I'm not taking sides.) Now if that was government money funding the hunt that would be something, but private money can do whatever it wants.

There isn't a lot of universities having to convince thier students to embrace science, it just doesn't make the news unless they do. For the most part the extremely religious types have thier own schools that they can attend like Holy Cross or BYU. I've got 2 degrees and there was never a question about evolution at either of the universities I attended. One of them was in Pennsylvania and the other in California.

As far as the upswelling of anti-science philisophy that is just part of the South here in the US. You see at one point they lost thier slaves and they really don't know where to place thier ignorant hatred at this point. The school systems are broken down there, the good ol' boy network is in full effect, and it is the home of the most famous terrorist organization in the US, the KKK. Reason and understanding are in short supply down there, and every once and a while they start making some noise just so we all don't forget about them. For a good time, see Colbert interviewing Georgia's Rep who wanted the 10 commandments in a courthouse, but could only name 3 or 4 of them himself.

It seems more and more that the PC games I am interested in are released incomplete and get shoddy patches afterwards. I do enjoy not having to patch my console games.

Consoles are catching up so quick that in a few years once the prices come down and the online services are more developed there may be little reason to game on a PC anymore. If the consoles dont have a keyboard addon I'm sure they'll have something else.

Then of course there is the cheaters, which seem to be far more rare on console online services than in PC games. No, I don't think I'll miss PC games, though I have been playing them since the Trash80.

Perhaps this helped seal the deal for E3 (for now) as the majority of game companies cannot redifine gaming every E3 and stand to get much less press than the big few who try.

As far as Sony not doing anything right lately, the simply have too many divisions that have competing and different needs. They really need to spin off some departments imho. After the root kit incident I really don't care what happens to Sony but if they are going to do outrageous things like that they need to hide it behind a different company name at the very least.

I don't know if it was a game limitation or an engine limitation, regardless I wasn't too thrilled with it. I recall thinking the same thing about Quake 4, though I think the limit was 4 mobs on that one. I'm sure the decision was made that the engine was to be as beefy as possible (and it sure does do a lot), but from my experience with Doom there was never more than 3 mobs at a time. That just isn't enough, especially considering hell has ripped open and demons are supposedly pouring through. (or whatever.)

The lag on quake 4 multiplayer was enough for me to put it away forever, though I'm sure it has been improved by now. I have a 7800GTX and even at 800x600 with all options turned off it was so vastly different from Quake 3s quickness and responsiveness I still get misty eyed over it. In my opinion however I just doesn't get any sweeter than Quake 3 engine, to me it really feels like an extension of myself on how fast it reacts. Now if we can just get them to make the "unlagged" mod standard issue...

Yes we can hyperthread if we want to, however more power and better graphics don't necessarily make a game fun. I really am not sure if Sony gets this, being a "high end" electronics company.

Everything about their press releases scream graphics as well. You certainly aren't going to fill a 40gb dvd with just AI and codebase. They are pushing the graphics angle so hard it almost seems like force feeding.

One thing I do know being a game artist is that it is easier *for me* to put things out in .X than most other things. I don't even like MS but I gotta hand it to them, it's way easier (read: productive) to make games for it than it is for the PS3. (Compressed parallax mapping for DX shaders is a beautiful thing.) Game companies are here to make money, not push the envelope, and as such they won't adopt something that costs 2x as much dev time in order to charge $10 more for a game. It's not about hating on Sony, it's about making money. If Sony makes it hard for game companies to make money, well, whats the point?

    Just my 2 cents.

I believe that Carmack is an amazing dev, however I don't think id really understands whats made Doom popular in the first place. For me at least it was never about good graphics or scariness, it was about staying alive versus huge amounts of monsters. With Doom 3 only displaying 3 mobs at any 1 time, I have lost my interest in id games. I guess good graphics can only go so far before we see the mirrors through the smoke.
