    There is nothing in the universe more solid than a damn DEC/Alpha running Oracle. Those boxes don't go down for anything.

    Except when you plug a VT terminal into the console port using some "mystery wire" that fit into both connectors. Ooops.

    V was fanastic. It had the whole Nazi vs Resistance thing going in it. (Look at the symbol of the Vistors). So it wasn't original, but then again, much of human experience is the same shit over and over.
    V has two seasons of shows, plus a number of made for tv movies (some mini-series type stuff). I need to dig out the old VHS tapes.

    Who can forget the toys? THEY were awesome.
    But I have to admit, that whole star-child Elizabeth thing was pretty lame. Especially since she went from infant to 18 in a month.

    Remember when Murdock from the A-Team went through the transporter and became super-smart. They diagnosed him as possible being messed up by some mess up in the transporter.

    Riker said it was not possible, as there hasnt been a reported case since _______ .

    I recognize that giving up these things "for the children" (sorry, obligatory), will be hard for some, but if we save just 1, just one life, won't be it worth it?

    Look into some of Tesla's patents. A search on google will return a bevy of information.

    One of his patent's was for an "electricity pump" that would pump power into the ground, and to access it, stick a wire into the ground.

    Some of his stuff is pretty far out (for me maybe), I suppose, but he was a genious.

    If he could send electricity through the earth, why not some data. It would be the "next step"...

    If you have 1000s of hours of labor involved in the project, at a conservative $10/hr, that is still a pile added on.

    If your site is an e-commerce site of some sort, you need to factor that in as well. If your site is a /. sort of meeting place, I can't imagine that would be worth as much as something that has a tangible product.

    It maybe $10,000/lb from earth. But not from the moon. With 1/6 the gravity, it would tremendously easier to send mined material back to earth.

    How much support staff does a shuttle launch need? That's why it so expensive. How much does an ESA launch cost? How about the Chinese?

    Nah, I don't think I contradicted myself.
    1) Iridium is a sign to VCs that space is expensive, and financing an industry in space which returns little is a colossal waste of money. 2) If there is a big return on investements (like huge ore deposits), missions there would have bigger justification.

    Look at oil for example. In the Alaskan Arctic. It's wildly expensive to build all that infrastructure, they fly employees up there daily from Anchorage, they needed to build more of less self-sufficient complexes, then they needed to build a 4' diameter pipe for 800 miles to get the oil to an ice free harbor. Untold billions of dollars were spent building it. But the rewards have been HUGE. 10 billon barrels of oil so far.

    Unfortunately, the Iridium project will be looked at by future venture capitalists as evidence of failed non-governmental space ventures.
    It would be spectacular to get a small craft back to the moon. If we found the suspected ore-deposits there, rest assured, everyone and their mother would line up to get there.

    A: Most satellites are in geostationary orbit, so that they have a 24 hour orbital period. (Meaning it will stay over the same point on earth in it's orbit). It's 35,786 kms up.

    Speed of light = 3e8 m/s,
    35K x 2 = 70K. 70/300 = .23 seconds to go up and back. Not counting switching.

    Here's another thing. Look at places like China over 1,000,000,000 people and hardly any Chrisitans and I don't see their country going to pot. In fact it's doing pretty damn well. Care to explain that one away?

    Except for the fact that they have no rights to freedom of expresssion or religion, their internet access is severely restricted, the 3 Gorges dam is destroying some beautiful terrain, human rights violations abound.

    Other than that, they're doing pretty well.

    That is brilliant, and I agree 110%.

    I am just troubled by the union of government and industry in this way. If a company wants to spy on another, fine... Goverment spying on another country's company then passing information to our own companies (which most are multi-national anyway)... that is troubling.
