  1. Fine with me on Sandy Bridge-E CPUs Too Hot For Intel? · · Score: 1

If I'm building a computer that powerful I never use the stock cooler. The first thing I usually do with a CPU is remove the factory heatsink and throw it at the nearest person.

Liquid cooling is so simple and ubiquitous these days there's very little reason not to use it when you have something this powerful to cool.

To get a fast boot, the solution is to not run a metric buttload of crap.

Amen. The computer I'm on now is about 3 years old and middle-of-the-road specs. With WinXP cut down to about 20 processes on startup, it takes my (Normal, non-SSD, non-uber-drive) computer about 40s to load to working desktop.

When it comes to new models they can say "It's so fast!" all they want, but chances are either your top performance capability suffers because of it, or your computer isn't truly 'ready' yet and the rest of the crap is still loading in the background(or on-demand like mine does). Sure, Java takes 10s more to start, but it doesn't add 30s to my boot time because I turned off the update scheduler and quick starter programs it insists on booting with. My DAW software takes an extra 30s to load, because I don't launch various SQL writers/servers at startup, but I don't use it often enough to just let everything run in the background all the time.

If people realized that keeping running crap to a minimum is the key to a working PC, they would probably be much more careful about what they installed.

I don't know what kind of magical transistors you are using, but fried transistors are a nearly daily occurrence for me.

And if you are all about playing it as the artist intended, then why the hell are you distorting it then?

Well, if you actually had been in a pro recording studio in a while, you'd know that the artist has little input on the mixdown and mastering when recording. More often than not, the whole recording session is just sent off to a 'mastering house' where they do all the intonation and equalization and mix it together into a single sound.

Furthermore, the 'distortion' which they are referring to from vacuum tubes is not the static-popping-filthy noise that you probably equate with a blown speaker type distortion, but a slight change in the equalization and timbre, which is often the same way it is played to the artist during recording and mastering in the studio - with tubes. Let's not even go into the fact that a majority of live-instrument artists still play their music on tube-based amps...

I have no reason to believe this ability won't be abused until it *IS* a violation of the 1st amendment.
