  1. Re:Moving on on Linuxcare Business Shuffle (UPDATED) · · Score: 2

Since this is a former linuxcare employee thread. (Not fired though, left of my own will.) Fernand brought maturity to Linuxcare. He brought in seasoned managers. Managers who knew and understood the fortune 1000. What I think happened, was that there maybe wasn't a balance with the people who understood Linux as a whole. Dave Sifry, and Art Tyde are shining examples of people who do. When I was there had an influence on Fernand. Fernand was a performance based individual. You did good you kept your job. You did bad, wham!
I left about a month before Nasuer started. But Linuxcares IT infrastructure when I was there, had all the physical pieces in my opinion. It just needed a good orchestrator. Maybe Naseur would have been good in other environments, but not in this one.
On the other hand starting with a certain VP of engineering, linuxcare had a habit of screwing good people. (don't read into this to much, I was not one of them.)

  3. Re:Thank you linux... on LinuxCare Gets $32M In Funding · · Score: 1

I worked at Linuxcare for a while, and left for my own reasons.
Let me explain why I think Linuxcare will succeed:
    1. They have a real managment team. They just didn't take people who had done cool things on Linux and throw them into managment. The team over their is full of Fortune 500 executives.

    2. Fernand Serrat is their CEO and a bottom line guy. He spent 20+ years at IBM. He is a very fair, but bottom line kind of guy. He knows what it takes.
    3. These guys all have a technology background, they know what the big boys want. They know how to give it them.
    4. They are one of the few companies that I have seen that has found the balance between geekdom, and the suits. They know the importance of the geeks, and the open source community. And can bridge that with the needs of the business community. People like Art Tyde and Dave Sifry are great bridges.
    5. Red Hat just got lucky, right place right time. These guys actually have the stuff to back it up.

  4. AT&T owns VNC on GraphOn Patents Remote Windows Apps Over X · · Score: 1

Yes, I know they GPL'ed it. But if Graphon is going to sue someone for patent infringment they will most likely go after AT&T. AT&T has deep pockets, and has the potential to hit back preety hard.

    Or, can they sue AT&T?

  5. Starting a Small biz.. Everybody starts small on Suggestions for a Startup Web Company · · Score: 3

Before you start a business you need to do a lot of planning. Places like startups.com can help you with that. You need to devide whether you are going to be a Corp, Inc., or LLC. Do I want to give up equity in exchange for deniro. Do I have the money to start this? Do I have the money to support myself while my business is loosing money? Am I a manager or an engineer? Do I want to bring in experienced managment to help me run it.

Rob was one of the lucky ones. He just had a good concept and worked hard. Most people aren't that lucky!8 out of 10 startups fail, and not in a blaze of glory. (Anyone remember Pen Computing.)

The NSA now can probably snap RSA or blowfish like a twig. The comment that the NSA drop the Zimmerman law suit because of bad publicity is probably true. Way back when they first filed it it, they probably couldn't break RSA, or were unable to do it without some degree of effort. We have to keep in mind that the NSA most surely has not been following Moore's law for about 20+ years.

RSA and the such will keep your message secure from 99% of the people out their. The other 1% could find out with a court order.

The biggest difference between Linux and Solaris is that you will have to negotiate with Sun when you want to ship an app that is commercial. THat is a new concept. Will they be rereleasing the PowerPC port too?I realize that this was a CHRP port? But hey a PowerPC dual boot Linux/Solaris system. Not bad.

  9. Moving a new platform in on Ask Slashdot: Does your Employer have an OSS Policy? · · Score: 1

Alot of people in the Unix world don't see to understand that for Fortune 1000 companies especially. Adding a new platform to the mix after years of standardization is a huge decision. Their are several other factors to be considered. The biggest one a CIO wants is accountability. Who is accountable for bugs in the OS. Traditionally it has been a IBM or a Sun. With the "Open Source" movement that whole parigram is changed.

  11. Firewire is a sleeper on Is firewire dying? · · Score: 1

Firewire is sleeping. Bottom line its faster.Firewire is not sitting still. Multimedia in general is not getting any less bandwidth hungry.
Currently the largest deployments of firewire have been seen on upcoming and some current consumer electronics. Apple will do something slick like bundle a fireware equiped iMac with a video camera that supports firewire. That will get people moving.
USB had a fair amount of peripherials out for it before Apple came out with the runaway hit called the iMac. Now their is hardly a USB peripherial out their that doesn't come in atleast a shade of "Bonsai" Blue, or "Blueberry."
You will see Firewire show up on VCR's, Camcorders, and professional equipment. It is already Apples G3's and G4's. And is just waiting for that consumer kick. Intel's USB was dying a slow death before Apple kicked it into overdrive. The same thing will happen with Firewire.
