I think this is something that every slashdot reader can get behind. Far be it from me to attempt to voice the concerns of the community, but Mr. Fuller deserves the respect of us all after his work in architecture that lead to important discovers in chemistry.

This is a landmark that should be preserved at all costs. I don't think any of us will have a problem giving a small portion of our incomes to such a worthy cause. Since we are all good Americans, none of us should mind paying a nominal tax in honor of the greatest Buckminster than we have ever known.

    God bless.

Programmers: please study this closely, and we will finally allow Linux to compete.

The whole thing was doomed to failure. Look back at the original plans of Arpanet (the precursor to the Internet, documents available at the Library of Congress). URLs were never meant to be easy to remember. They are a technical device intended to allow addresses to reflect physical network layouts more intuitively than do IP addresses.

Of course, these have been abused since the web took off. A great example is slashdot: apple.slashdot.org is not necessarily a different machine than bsd.slashdot.org, and either one or both may be multiple machines in RL.

URLs are not targetted at end-users, who should be dealing with bookmarks and search engines to access business names.

Basically, RealNames was a kluge that won't be missed; good riddance, I say.

I can't say I blamed Pixar, though; the pre-X versions of the Mac OS were fine for schools and light home use, but the lack of decent memory and process management was a major drawback for feature film production.

It's great to see Macs become competitive again. Let's hope that a) Pixar can maintain the calibar of their work, and b) a Linux-based competitor can give them a run for their money.

It's good to see this issue getting some coverage finally.

For the less-informed: Linux began on the 386, was ported to the 486 and Pentium by GNU (stands for "GNU: Not Unix"), and recently has been showing up everywhere from your refridgerator to the Playstation.

So I was not surprised that I could run Linux on my corporate mainframe. I had been using a kind of homebrew combo of NT and OpenBSD before (mainframes can be set up to dual boot much easier than your typical PC) and decided to switch to Linux because of its USB drivers.

Basically, performance nearly matched my old setup, outcomputing the previous OS in some trials, and otherwise putting up a fair fight.

The preemptive multithreading and protected process management in the 2.4.5 kernel have been a boon to enterprise-class admins everywhere. The minor disagreement over disk drivers was solved eventually, and I think mainframe Linux has a bright and starry future.

That means I need only one more point to get my bonus back! If you have an extra moderator point, rate this "Underrated" (that way you won't get burned in M2). You will be doing the entire community a favor, as I tend to post much better messages with a +1 bonus. Plus, my very first bonus post will be Insightful, and the added visibility will help me quickly get modded up, and I will be in "safe territory" once more.

Thank you so much for your help. Every little bit helps.

Before modding me down based on the subject, please consider my ideas. I think you'll find that I'm actually in agreement with the greater geek community.

Now, one thing that the Linux community has been battling for a while now is what exactly "Linux" is. We all know the answer: it is a kernel, or a microkernel to be more precise, which combined with the GNU macrokernel is an entire operating system. Add in X and you have a distro[bution]. Simple, really.

But America doesn't get it. When you say Linux, they want to know the stock symbol and the CEO. I know we have all read Linus's great rant "The Cathedral and the Bizarre," but the fact is, when it comes to winning over the Windoze crowd, what we lack is a single representative for our movement. There is a lot of wasted effort as companies like Red Hat and Mandrake invest billions annually attempting to make Linux remotely usable for the average user. If one of these companies could be absorbed into the other, or just defeated in the market, then we'd see a much healthier Linux product that can finally compete with Windows.

Again, apologies for not repeating the slashbot "party line," but I guess I will just have to take a chance with the karma.
