I think your easy fix solution to a very difficult problem might not work!

I, like others, believe it's a cultural issue. Living in Los Angeles, we live with many people - from all over the world! One thing my friends have told me is that "certain orientals feel they have the right of way." It's a cultural thing, where they don't have to give the right of way to someone else. This is why, for example, yesterday pulling into a parking lot with a woman walking in the middle of my lane kept walking even when she saw me. She felt no need to move to the side. As a matter of fact, it would have seemed like she WANTED me to stop, but of course that was not the case.

Most people would move out of the way of a moving vehicle, but not all. This is also demonstrated by a car a day earlier, who cuts off all FAST moving traffic while practically stopping after making a left turn. This is also why insurance rates are also extremely expensive where I live and cheaper the further east you go.

Like I tell everyone, people in Mexico don't really respect 'traffic guide lines' (I don't call them laws because in theory, people respect the law). But it works for them, because everyone has the same mentality (and if you don't, you'll hear about it REAL QUICK and hopefully learn to "go with the flow"). But here, we have both people who follow the law, those who break it knowingly, and the rest who just don't care because they believe they have the right to do what they like. And that's why we have so many problems HERE.

So, if you think giving tickets in India is going to fix the problem, then we should start fining 'terrorists' in Afghanistan, because that'll surely solve that issue.

I think I figured out most of what they said, but the stuff i just couldn't were local to their area.

Although generally not a language issues, I regularly hang up on support reps until I get someone who is willing to do what I want (things NOT out of the question of course!).

Recently, I got a $30 credit that was supposed to be in the form of a gift card, which was great because I didn't have to wait another month for it. And then getting a phone replaced through the phone instead of going to a physical store. It was also shipped to me over night. But of course, it isn't as easy at it seems! Why does it have to be this? What happened to the 'customer is always right" OR "deserves the best service possible?"

It's hard to place a monetary value on such things, though I entirely agree that it should at least be in the same country.

I heard this morning on the radio how do you reach a cost of each injured/sick/dying/dead pelican caused by the BP oil spill? They did what an economist did 30 years ago to read the same figure, ask away in a survey what people would pay to keep that from happening. Of course, the replies were CRAZY! Everything from $1-$10,000 PER pelican. But that is not how they reached the actual figure (anymore). They instead figure out how much it costs to save those same pelicans that CAN be saved. I think it ended up between $500-$750 depending on care etc.

So how much is this tech support worth in the states? California? Florida? Texas? The wages in California, I AM SURE re upper class wages in india, samoa etc. Same as anything based out of NY. But how do you calculate that? How little a person is willing to accept.

While I agree that overseas support is more often than not hard to work with, we have to remember some of those experiences we've had here as well, such as a country boy with a heavy accent who isn't able to understand what we're saying. I regularly get asked more than a few times to respell my email address, apparently, they don't understand the concept of a non-standard email wording for security purposes. A few have even refused to take it because it "sounds fake." But as is true with all centers and services, keep trying until you find someone who's willing to work with you!

Actually, the signature is nothing more than an approval to a contract, not for comparison purposes. The signature panel on the back of your credit card signifies that you agreed to the cardholder agreement. The signature on the slip signifies that you are agreeing to pay the amount specified as a valid debt. The signature on the cheque indicates that you're agreeing to pay the amount specified on the note. A cheque can be written on anything as long as it contains the payee details (name), payer details (name, account number), the amount to be paid, the date and a signature indicating approval of the transaction. You could write this all on a piece of paper and it would be valid - it's how banks give you generic cheques where you have to fill in all the details yourself while your customized ones arrive later.

What bank is this? (So I know to avoid business with them.)

Having worked in a bank opening new accounts (not by choice!) I can verify that at least that banks policy was not just for contractual agreements, but for verifying the signer. For example:

) Someone walks in with a check. They wish to cash it. It's $60.
) The teller pays it because its $60.

) Someone later that day returns with a check for $260. The teller says hang on a sec while I verify the funds.
) The teller gets up, and if local, obtains the "signature card." If not, it calls and requests a fax of the signature card from the home branch.
) Teller then compares the signature card to signature on check using any of various techniques. If they match up then its paid. If it doesn't, then we have a process for that

So yes, the signature is important, not just for agreement. Also, regarding the checks, you can't put it on any paper. Those blanks you get from the bank, yeah, they're not accepted everywhere, and for good reason too! While at the bank, I was told - whether its true or not is another matter, that the account numbers use magnetic ink. So while in theory, you could "use any paper that looks like a check," hopefully most people will refuse it, and at worst checks are unique financial instruments with a lot of security features.

Take for example, that instead of growing a botnet for malicious reasons, I've told many that what someone should do is create virtuous botnet! Yes, virtuous!!

If I was to do this, I would make a botnet that deployed an antivirus. It could work like this:

    n) Find its way to host
    n) Check to see if it has an antivirus program installed. If so, check to see if it's any good. If not, rm -rf /antivirus/* and install a a OSS/free AV of my liking
    n) Scan host for infections, notify them and quarantine everything by default (because most users have no clue anyway)
    n) Phone home with info to create the worlds largest DB of infections and update all other machines to prevent same infection. n) Search for new hosts through contacts (twitter, myface, facebook etc)
    n) ????????
    n) Profit!

Now, if it was purely sinister, I would deploy a desktop wallpaper of a warewolf fighting a unicorn. And if ever caught, I would say "I only wanted to spread this great wallpaper! I didn't mean for it to also distribute malicious infections!"

July 28, 2010 CITY HALL — Santa Monica officials have agreed to conduct an independent review of police actions during a four-month investigation into whether school board member Oscar de la Torre committed child endangerment in connection with an after school fist fight between two teenagers.

    ...

The incident that prompted the police department's investigation occurred March 16 in an alley about a block from Santa Monica High School and next to the Pico Youth & Family Center, the non-profit that de la Torre runs.

After learning that a fight was breaking out, de la Torre rushed to the scene of the fight.

Police said cell phone videos taken of the fight showed de la Torre failed to break up the fight, instead allowing it to "develop, continue, and escalate in its injury potential." Because of his role as executive director of the PYFC, police said he had an obligation to step in and break up the fight.

De la Torre said he spent about a minute assessing the situation and the crowd of about 40 students that had gathered before taking action.

Police based a large part of their case against de la Torre on a cell phone video they obtained from a bystander that appeared to show de la Torre stepping between the two fighters after 59 seconds, when the fight apparently stopped.

Though not shown in the video, de la Torre said he was able to get the two boys involved in the fight to shake hands after it ended.

Eventually, when I came of age to work and spend foolishly all of my money on music, I still have a case logic case full of 'original' CDs. Yes, that's over 200 Compact Audio Discs that cost over $20. The most expensive was my Grover Washing Jr. Mister Magic album that has 4 tracks. Yes, 4 tracks and over $30 (it was very hard to find, you see, there was no inet at that time like we know it today).

Loving music, as much as I did/do, I've been playing musical instruments a long time. One of them a guitar. So on one afternoon after school, during my mini rock concert for my neighbors, my Metallica Master of Puppets CD cracked in half after my set. What was I to do? Go and buy another $20 CD? I still dealt with tapes, but preferred CDs. Buying another CD was out of the question because money was now diverted to my car. Napster was starting to get into the news, but I wasn't in my 'computer age' yet, so my 486 wasn't up to do much for me.

The fair question of why do I have to buy something I already own came into existence then. When music companies say that you don't own the music, you license it on a per disc/tape/media basis. So 2 CDs are 2 licenses, not one, thus they don't owe you jack.

So now my collection sits cozy in its safe case, never worrying about heat in a car, pressure in a bag, strangers dirty fingers or even sand from the beach. This is the only way to fly!

    You mean virtue.

Basically every device can BE VIRTUOUS or it's exact opposite, so that you can potentially use it legitimately in itself isn't a real defense.

Laws aren't smart or flexible enough to deal with virtue. For example, I just heard on the radio last night some dude who was arrested for "child endangerment." The reason: he saw a fight between 2 kids and broke it up. Was arrested and charged with that. His background: student body president while in HS, went to chico and graduated, went to be president of some school association and broke up a fight between his 2 students.

He asked: "Why is it that I am charged with child endangerment while those who were spectators or the others who recorded the fight weren't?" The council member said "we'll look into your case and review if any policy/rule/law wasn't followed appropriately. That's what happens when you have virtue in the legal system.
